FYI Never store your jars of home canned food with the bands on. It can cause a false seal.

Hey guys, I have an older vacuum sealer same brand. You have to make sure the opening of the bag is in-between the two black gaskets in the machine. That looks to be the issue. Jill, give that a try next time.

Laura, thanks for sharing your groceries etc for audit! Wow.... your freezer is organized!! Jill & Tawra, thanks for the giggles with the vacuum sealer!! We've done exactly the same thing of the food coming out 'cos we forgot to seal the base!!! We only bought ours a year ago & it's been really fantastic for us. Not used a lot, but very helpful for the items we do vacuum seal. Tawra, thanks for all of your thoughts about this. I continue to learn things with every audit. My hubby & sons are delighted with the savings we're making on our grocery budget! 🥰Blessings from South Australia💕🐨

I have been buying all my clothes ( except the under wear ) from thrift stores for over 40 years, I have a very lovely high end wardrobe for pennies on the dollar. Some items still had the tags on them...with the money saved I bought a rental house for cash which now pays my cost of living so I'm living for free. I bought the house 8 years ago and next year the tenants over the years will have paid me back what I paid for the house. I paid $80 thousand and current market price is $300 so instead of organic chicken, farmers market food, meals out and expensive holidays I have 2 mortgage free houses.

Your mom got a great deal on the canisters. She can use the larger cylinder one as a vacuum chamber to reuse glass jars that don't have a standard size lid. Fill the clean jar with dry food, screw on the lid, put the jar in the cylindrical chamber and run the vacuum sealer as usual. Once the vacuum is finished, remove the sealed jar from the chamber. She can reuse the jars this way as long as the lid has one some type of rubbery material inside it.

I use my Instant Pot to cook a whole chicken. I rub the chicken with butter and seasonings under the skin. It cooks for 6 minutes per pound, so a 4 pound chicken takes 24 minutes. It is fall off the bone tender, and there is chicken broth in the pot to use to make gravy or save for another use. If a browned skin is desired, the chicken can be placed under the broiler for a few minutes. It comes out perfect every time.

She spent $8 on 2 pomegranates and 3.50 for a chocolate bar, then 10 for flowers. She's only counting the flowers as being frivolous, but just those 3 items are over $20. I understand that she prefers to eat higher quality foods. In order for me to be able to do the same I've cut out breakfast and reduced the variety of foods. Since she already has blueberries she shouldn't need pomegranates (thinking about nutrition) Surely she could do without the 3 items and do that often enough for a significant savings.
If this woman is serious about saving money then she's doing it backwards. She should set a dollar amount that she wants to spend then shop within that amount. I roamed the grocery store for years with a calculator in hand, and even a binder at times. 20lbs of rice is what, $12 now. That with 4 oz of meat and a large serving of veggies for 2 meals a day, change it up with pasta or potatoes, is all she needs. The fancy fruit and chocolates should go away until she reaches her goal. People used to get fruit as a gift not too long ago.

Your mom wasn't using the FoodSaver correctly. You need to put the Open edge of the bag inside that slot that has the gasket around it. You don't just lay it in there. That's what sucks the air out. You kind of bend it around the edge into that slot before you close it. Have her watch a video if she's unsure

A caution for Laura- the rings should be removed on your canning jars - the reason is if they loosen up and reseal you wouldn’t necessarily know it. Also, stacking canned jars directly on top of each other not recommended for same reason. For you whole frozen turkey: if you’re not sure what to do with it, thaw it, cut up and pressure can it. It will then be an already cooked ingredient for many dishes/meals. I see that you appreciate fresh, organic foods and are willing to spend / not skimp if possible (I do too for certain things). All the ground beef mixtures (taco, Italian etc) do well if pressure canned too.

I agree with everything in this video, especially the farmer market take (I don't know why so many people recommend these places!) but seeing that mortgage rate I have to say run the math on throwing that extra $200 or $500 into index funds instead. You basically have free money with that mortgage rate. Index funds generally give 8-10% returns. It's hard to beat that! Other than that, this channel is a breath of fresh air with common sense and just plain smart. Kudos to you guys!

I can tell by all the farmers markets stuff, that she watches too many youtube homesteading channels. Thats all they talk about! (And yes, im a youtuber as well, but i know better!) Yeah, its nice and all to support them but they have to have REAL prices for me, or ill just grow it myself or get locally at a health food store and preserve it myself! She'd better off picking that produce herself and preserving it if she wants to go that route! Believe me! I get where she's coming from, but those prices are outrageous, even for farmers markets!
I would rather pay $3 or $5 for 10 lb of tomatoes that would technically get her about 4-6 pints of barbecue sauce! I have an excellent recipe video 😉

I almost feel that she goes to local farmers and farmers markets as a hobby. If so, I would put that in my entertainment budget. I agree with Tawra that those are luxuries. By the way, I shop at Kroger and look at my % savings and rarely is it less than 40% since just about everything I buy is a sale or clearance item and I know my "buy" prices. It's not that canned goods "go bad" after a year. After a year, they lose nutritional value. Ive eaten things up to 10 years old! They will last indefintely as long as the seals are good on them. But the crappy canning supplies they make nowadays, they wont last as long. Im a generational canner (which means generations before me canned and I carry that eay of life on).
