  • The greatest thing about Seeker? It's not the size, the strength, her engines, or even the sails. It is the community of crew are supporters that have been drawn to her. People who are confident, adventurous, quick to laugh even at themselves, accepting of others, and who often say goodbye with a hug instead of a handshake. What a wonderful world we would have if we had more people like Seeker's crew. That is indeed the greatest thing about Seeker.

      BraveTheWilds ....fear everything else? : ) Come on man. It was suppose to break in half on the road trip. Then it was never going to get insurance for launch. Then it was suppose to sink when launched. Is your loser think mentality not apparent enough already? Are you really so blind as not to see what friends and a positive outlook can do? Join the wining team. Life is too short to be a loser.

    I love this project. I know Seeker is all about getting it done and I applaud that always. It is just a fingernails on chalkboard thing. Sails laying on concrete, m-kay. Sails being dragged on concrete, ouch! Walking on sails laying concrete, for the love of all that is nautical....nebbermind. What a beautiful day to raise sails! (when you find your sails wearing and tearing earliest at the places they were abraded by the concrete, maybe remember this comment, lol). Godspeed! :)

    Just so my last comment doesn't come off as negative (it wasn't meant so): that cheap cotton painters drop cloth that comes in 6' wide rolls is great for rolling out on concrete or gravel to lay sails on. It is also cheap enough to be used in a pinch for about anything (sopping diesel from bilge, jamming in a hull leak etc, making spare underpants, etc). It is basically "rag" on a roll. Makes great impromptu sunshade also, and if waterproofed can make good temporary weather screens at anchor

    I'm gonna need to read up on junk rigs a bit. I know generally on a sailboat you want to keep your weight aloft as low as possible to help reduce heeling forces. Those heavy pipe battens seem like major overkill. They're certainly super durable but I do worry a bit about whether Seeker will have enough righting force in her keels when the wind picks up... Then again, I've watched enough of this channel to know you probably did at least a bit of math about that, so maybe it'll be ok. Call me cautiously optimistic; just be careful about it the first few times you get those sails up.
    My own caution aside, its super cool to see Seeker becoming a sailboat for real. Thanks again for sharing!

    My prediction is that those sails will have the same outcome as the dinghy.
    Not criticizing, but just pointing out that you probably should have let the professionals do the sails. But alas there are always tradeoff decisions to made when on a budget. I personally would have outsourced the sails no matter the cost. Easy to say, difficult to do on a bespoke boat like yours.
    But you will look like a genius in the end because you will get free custom sails from a sponsor is my prediction! If I owned a sail company I’d be banging on your door to demonstrate my company’s quality, skill and ability to do custom work too.
    Good luck and enjoy your show immensely!

    • @SailingSVPipedream
      @SailingSVPipedream 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MarcBeaulieuisGreat That is true kind of, however in practice it sometimes turns out to be a non-issue. I have used stainless rivets in my mast to secure galvanised steel steps to aluminium poles. I did not use a J5 compound, just a bit of sikaflex. 25 years later, I have just drilled them out and found no discernible corrosion or issues. However on my marine sail track that was anodised and attached as per manufacturers recommendations with stainless bolts, there has been corrosion. Likewise an outboard engine will be aluminium and the bolts holding it together will be stainless. A jointing compound will have likely been used when first built, but that will be long gone within a few years of servicing and yet there are still plenty of 1960s outboards motors still out there going strong.

    Hopefully I didn't just miss it in this or another video, but why is the forward mast raked so far forward? Having that much rake in the aft direction is not uncommon, especially on schooners, cats, & race boats but I have never seen a rig intentionally raked forwards before.
    I'm rather unfamiliar with junk rigs but I'm going to assume it is for roach clearance on the main mast as I do know junk sails carry a ton of roach.

      The forward rake of the forward mask is normal if you are not going to fly a jib.

    Why are the ends of those spars welded closed? You're drilling holes for the bolts and zipties that will absolutely let in moisture, I could see this adding a considerable amount of weight and raising the center of gravity by a lot over time. Maybe I'm missing something, is there a way for the spars to drain?

    • @SVSeeker
      @SVSeeker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We'll add drain holes if that is a problem but I don't think it will be. And the end caps keep them from howling in the wind.

    The only thing that smells worse than roadkill is the shit that comes out of the animals that eat the road kill, and the worst shit of them all is turkey vultures. Groups of them perch in trees at night. If you're four-wheeling with buddies at night and park under that tree and cut your engines for a beer-break, they will get agitated and flap their wings and make a lot of windy noise and they will shit on you. When you feel those droppings hit your helmet, don't reflexively scrape it off with your gloves. When your buddy calls out and asks, "what is that shit!?!?", you can look at that smear on your glove and know my friends, this is the realist shit you ever saw. That's when you look up and see those turkey vultures silhouetted against the moon light with their wings fanned out and more poop plopping on your quads and shoulders and on the ground around you. And then we kick-started our quads and got out fast...but not fast enough. Our quads stunk for a month. Our gloves went in the trash. Our clothes were laundered and laundered and laundered again and they never quite recovered. Neither have I.
