- Sails and other boat stuff needed to sail Seeker are underway. I hope you have enjoyed the recent glut of videos. We are 1200 miles from Tulsa to the Gulf of Mexico and it feels like a good start. Again, I'd like to thank you for all the congratulations. There were a lot of people that doubted, the welding, the engine, the transmission, the props, the ....well, just name anything, and there were naysayers. It seems surreal to see you sitting on calm waters, at the "final harbour", working on your boat, after all these years. It's been an inspiring journey and I'm super thankful that you've shared it with us all this time.
It's still a bit surreal to me too.
I saw the very first video and was hooked!
Right on man. Been watching for years and I couldn’t be more thrilled to see her sitting on the water and continuing the work that needs to be done.
Doug, I've been watching for years and I can't be happier for you. You are truly living the dream.... boat floats.... just take her down the river...anchor in the gulf and work out the sails and rigging.... may the sunsets only rival the sunrises.... may the wind only really blow at whatever angle a junk rigged ship sails best.... wish you only the best and thank you for sharing your journey with the rest of us. Truly an inspiration.

I vas a parachute rigger in the Navy. I never sewed sails, but sometimes repaired heavy harness, sewing with nylon #6 cord and three inch needles. There was no way to get that monster needle through three or four layers of webbing without a palm.

It's really cool when you get to see a huge pod of dolphins in a wild feeding frenzy, there's really nothing like it. Sails are coming along. Looking good guys looking good.
Good to see your giving some Old Salts a chance to give you lessons on sail preps/operations. Good on it all looking operable more than not. Sweet victory all around and keeping all minds focused on a common thought makes it all work, I'll give good thoughts too!!

Doug: really enjoying your progress, my friend. I watched you mid-way with the build in Tulsa and went back and caught up on all the other vids. Didn't get down to help any, I wish now I did. I went to the "launch' party and got a tour of the boat. I hope one of these days I can come out and help on the boat and assist the researchers in whatever they do. I can cook a little, swab decks and clean heads, whatever needs done. Keep on keeping on!!

Parrel beads: Traditionally they used wooden beads, I took a plastic cutting board, I think it is HMWPE or something. I used a 20,mm hole saw and cut wheels, and plan to put them on the parrels holding the battens to the mast.
HDPET actually. High Density Polyethylene Terephthalate. Golf ball idea is the best.
And you got a lot of help from your friends
3M has a weld through coating. It helps eliminate rust on the back side of the weld. Comes in a spray can .

When you get it permanent; safety wire those shackle keys because they will loosen up from movement.
I have found a piece of 316 TIG rod works great for that.
Lost my boat out of boathouse during hurricane Sally because shackle pin backed out.

I like watching the rope work and rigging as I was a certified arborist for a few decades.
I thought I saw a tractor seat on the mast head at one time. It looked like a convenient and comfortable work platform. Ha
I’ve been looking forward to these sail focused videos since you left Oklahoma. Exciting to see you getting closer to sailing! Appreciate your encouragement to all of use making one step towards our own personal project goals. No shame in making mistakes and learning from failure

I believe a GPS antenna is just an antenna. I have opened up one of those pods, replaced the original with a $20 replacement antenna and it worked just fine for years.
It's got a fancy stabilized compass in it too. But, yeah, they have a sinful markup.
It is an achievement for sure
on the golfball, I was a kid who pulled things apart to see how they work. I cut open a golf ball got through the skin then all the rubber then cut in a bit deeper punctured the liquid center and it squirted out under massive pressure nearly lost an eye literally spent a week in hospital it still gives me grief 60 yrs later.
I am so amped to see this thing under sail my prediction is she will be fine and the motor will become redundant. But every boat needs redundancy.
I have built a few boats now its the most fun you can have.

Seems I never took a trip on my sailboats without hearing stuff down below crashing to the sole going on the first tack. That's why they call it a shakedown cruise. You could calculate the horsepower of your sail rig. Then you can have a readout of the $$ you won't be spending while under sail. Bon Voyage.
Awesome accomplishment Doug.. I've been watching for about a year or 2 and after a marathon session of about 8 episodes catching up I had a dream that when you finally made it to the gulf and put your sales up the wind blew and broke all three of them at the same time .....lol
Advise Secure the pins of your stainless chakels. they have the habit coming loos in time.
This is such an amazing achievement, one day I'll build myself a sailboat but much smaller!

I love how this boat has developed and still developing with the educated “ shoot from hip” mentality. You are living my dream. I hope to build a smaller house boat this next year. I’m going to have to hurry I’m looking at 67 coming fast and running out of time so this has to be the year. I have the plans and it’s a “simple “ build of wood so it should outlast me and my wife is on board with me building it 😁

Might want to add a safety wire to those clevis pins that hold the sail up. Could be bad if they back themselves out.
Solving, evaluating, changing, changing again, evaluating, designing, thinking ahead about redundancy for failure with backup. Help from local experts, sorting out the perlins/sheaves/battens/powered winches. Learning, documenting, teaching. One sail at a time.
Consider some work lights on top of the mast so it can be daylight at night time.
They are already up. That's part of what we hauled up.
Doug i started watching your videos in 2014 when my daughter was born. Bought an old fiberglass 25’ the next week. Been refitting it for the junk rig as well. The swivel in the hall yard will be a mistake I’ve found in the last two years it will bind up if you use a multiple block arrangement
Not using a multiple block arrangement but we did consider that it might be a problem anyway. That is why the Boat Gods gave us welders. : )

I have drilled open a golf ball that had liquid inside not like a paste but water consistency I think it was blue
Hey Doug, those shackles on top of the mast don't have anything locking the pins in place. I have seen them undo and bring down rigs. We use stainless wire through the hole and back inside the shackle to make sure the can't undo.
I'll put a piece of TIG wire in there, but after we stop changing it around. : )

Congrats on the saltwater. With regards to halyards, could you space out the hydraulic motor from the back of the winch to allow you to make the socket sliding so you can disconnect the hydraulic motor in case it fails and use the winch by hand? Also keep in mind that since your halyards are external to the mast, you could set up a relatively short horizontal block and tackle setup (20’) with Prussics to raise the sails.
Yes, that could be done. But it’s not hard to turn it with the hydraulic motor installed. So we will see.
Maybe try using some skate/grind wax on the mast to reduce friction for the sails.

Figuring out the rigging is definitely something that you should have figured out before launching.
If you want to figure out all the details on a project this big, before you start building, you will never start building. If that is what you want, buy a set of plans and copy someone else.

Everything torqued to factory specs ? Oh yeah you were the factory😂
Zinc everything before paint, just experience from the bering sea lol that is two barrel knots... but a kerrick bend would have ben the better choice as the 2 knots he tied are large and make for more chafing. BUT... splicing is Ideal and if he can splice I do not know why you would give up 25% strength on the knot instead of a splice. Also those windows/portholes will break in weather I have seen Portholes desined for weather break in alaska... you need to change to windows with plexi 100% or you will be sorry... you can not always run from weather Chief engineer Alaska Crab fishing boats.

For what it’s worth, I have 40 years experience in the building business. And I know you’re going do what you wanna do. That’s why I keep watching and liking your vids. But I wouldn’t use Alex Plus caulk around those windows unless it’s just the only thing I had. Probably would’ve used 4200 marine sealant or, if I had to source something from the big box building stores, I would use Lexel clear caulk. I quit using silicone caulk years ago because on every remodel job I did I would find it failing to adhere to anything but itself. Anyway. Maybe what you put on the windows will last long enough to prove me wrong but if it doesn’t just consider this a suggestion from another old pro.
4200 is better but also pricier. If the silicon does the job then 4200, next time. But if I have to remove the windows? : )

If your winches don't work hydraulically you should still be able to put a handle in there and crank them down you got to think if your sales are up in bad weather something goes wrong you've got to get them down and I know you'll figure it out cuz you do always figure it out.... It's nice to see the old guys on there talking about the answers blowing in the wind cuz it is sailing is the answer homeless now hoping for a boat how do you start from nothing to something

Have you considered installing some diesel heater’s? They work well they’re very inexpensive and easy to install. I think you can get a 35000 btu unit for less than $200.

hey doug could you use roller skates wheels with bearings instead of those golf balls to easily go up the mass ? think of the roller coasters as they use wheels around the pipe holding it firm
No. Not around salt water. And there is no need for the battens to be tight to the mast.

PVC will become brittle and weak if it is exposed to sunlight, you should paint all the PVC.
Water maker should be run offshore in clear ocean water. Never in harbors they will not take out all chemicals. Makes your expensive filters last longer.
