This is an excellent video. I worked a career with the U.S. Forest Service that started with 4 years in fire management and then being an on call firefighter for the remainder of my career, as I chose to work in recreation and lands. There is a macho culture in wildland fire that has resulted in some near misses and fatalities. That has been changing as wildland fires are far more hazardous than they were in 1973, when I fought my first fire. Better objective analysis, far better risk management and different types of tactical decisions are now included in strategic objectives. Half of the U.S. Forest Service's budget for wildland fire management is spent in California, where I spent the last 18 years of my career. Some of the best firefighters in the country work in the state. The state has one of the best firefighting organization in the country, that being the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The Office of Emergency Service is among the very best in the U.S. Several hundred pieces of state owned apparatus can be placed on incidents more quickly than anywhere in the country. Provisions for making this mutual aid system run efficiently have been made and fine tuned. As a group the county and city fire departments in California are outstanding. The Incident Command System was developed in southern California and now is the standard system nationwide. With the type of thinking demonstrated in this video the departments and agencies will get even better. Congratulations to the SDFD!
