    The greatest thing an old firefighter can teach a young firefighter is how to become an old firefighter. Thank you.

    My Dad was killed in the Line of Duty along with his Engine Company Partner at the infamous Advance Auto Parts Fire in Chesapeake Virginia on March 18, 1996. Became the tipping point for the 2 in 2 out to become a National Standard in the Fire Service. My Dad Frank Young, a veteran firefighter was 38. The other Firefighter John Hudgins was 32. Some don’t make it back to the Firehouse. I still miss Dad very much

    very good video a lot of what they talked about,can be applied in other lines of work as well.The biggest one is complacency.I have nothing but respect for firefighters.My ex-father in law died on scene from a heart attack,I was the one who had to tell my young kids that their grandfather had passed. BE SAFE OUT THERE! GOD BLESS YOU.

    This is an incredible video and it just popped up in my feed, after 33 years on the job and 27 years being a lieutenant it’s very humbling! The PPE thing is so true, I never wear my hood for personal reasons ( just around my neck)but EVERY ROOKIE SHOULD! If rookies aren’t wearing their hood because it doesn’t look cool etc go to the burn center and look around. I honestly should but again have my personal reasons

    This video is the only video that has ever brought tears to my eyes. Im only a teen but i do know alot of people who are firefighters and who puts their life on the line for people who they dont know. They do this because its their passion to help others its what they live for. This video can change everybodys point of view on the men and women who serve as firefighters. In my opinion fire fighters are in my top five of the most bravest people in the world. To all firefighters thank you!!!!!

    Too often you see firefighters running in the scene, rushing, not being careful, not wearing PPE, not using a seatbelt, not making sure that tools are operated safely.
    Firefighting is dangerous enough as it is, without hotheads ignoring safety to make it even worse. Firefighters, play safe and do your job with honor!
    I might be a young firefighter, but the idea of safe operations is hacked deep into my head. I believe we can all work safely when we do our job!

    You have no right to criticise this this video, these are people who have chosen this job, the job of being a firefighter. Pay is not good, retirement of a lifetime firefighter is normaly filled with medical issues and more stress from experiences on the job and lastly the work that firefighters do go to is probably more than you will ever do in your life. These men and women save the lives of others what do you do? You sit behind a computer screen and criticize people 100 times braver than you.

    Also, when you do the math, all of these numbers add up. Hence the, "Also calculated to be sure." The number of total injuries reported by each occupation, when accounted for number of those serving in them over the past 12-15 years adds up exactly to the numbers each of these agencies reported. Furthermore, firefighters typically tackle a fire from the inside. It iss the most effective way to put out a fire. You will always have FFs on the outside, but over 90% of fires fought are breached.

    I've seen so many documentaries of the abuse, neglect and outright IGNORANCE of the city officials in Chicago as regards the fire department from lack of funding to equipment in such bad condition it is almost more dangerous than the fires. I am hoping those things have changed now and that the CFD is getting the help and recognition it, and ALL fire departments, deserves.

    Furthermore, governing organizations in charge of such statistics REQUIRE every injury sustained on the job to be reported to them. Within the Fire Service, every injury reported by a Fire Department to OSHA, USDOT, NFPA, and BLS, must be accompanied by 3 medical doctor statements and signatures, as well as often insurance company notations, documentation by medical staff, fire department crew, law enforcement, pictures of injury, a report from investigating agencies and often the attorney gen.

    @mattdaley8181 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    You clearly didn't get my point. The fact that more deaths are prevelant does not lessen the severity of the injury sustained. It is only a matter of FFs receiving pre-hospital and Emergency Department care quicker than the others. With the other trades, you are looking at a 45 minute window MINIMUM of transport time. With a life threatening injury, every 10 minutes passed can decrease survivability by 15-20%. If FFs waited as long as these others, no doubt they would have higher death rates.

    6 per 100k would mean only 60 are injured in each year. That's funny. My local department alone had 122 last year. And you called me an idiot. Again, official number is 11, 700. The year 2011 saw 71,090 injuries. That's 6,321 for overall FFs (wilderness, shipmen, volunteer, career) and 11,700 for career.

  • @Biffo1262
    @Biffo1262 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    In the UK firefighting is the ONLY occupation for which you can claim Industrial Injury Benefit for a heart attack. The firefighters I know who died from heart attacks in service were certainly far from overweight and were extremely fit. It's more about the crap you breathe in and the stress rather than poor lifestyle.

    "When the fire's blowing out the attic window, the first place you go to the building." I understand it's horrible falling if you're caught on the upper floor(s) but then all the shit's coming down on top of you. Probably just an idiom or something.

    31,590 career Firefighters were injured in 2011. There are 234,000. That means there are 13.5 injuries per 100. The highest of any occupation in 2011. Deaths may not be as prevalent. However, Firefighters still have a higher chance of being injured or killed:
    Fishermen: 1.82%
    Loggers: 4.4024%
    Pilots: 8.657%
    Refuse Workers: 10.32%
    Roofers: 8.832%
    Ironworkers: 12.73%
    Farmers: 4.83%
    Truck Drivers: 9.42%
    Linemen: 5.32%
    Taxi Drivers: 8.13%
    Firefighters: 13.507%

  • @mattdaley8181
    @mattdaley8181 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    How come when I google it, I find Firefighter #1? If you are finding any other statistic (which you obviously are, if you found some place saying only 6 per 100,000--which would lead one to question the credibility of your searches), it is simply erroneous. The fact of the matter is that the HEAD and MOST respected authority on such matters (Bureau of Labor Statistics) deems Fire Protection as number one for injuries. Go to BLS

    "I think you Firefighters no more deserve a lavish memorial." Oh, so everything revolves around what you think, huh? Doesn't matter what you think. Again, I am not a FF. Oh, what's the use? Nothing gets through your head. "Not in the top 10 most dangerous." Still relying on petty unfounded independent unreliable sources, huh? These top 10 lists can form whatever opinion of what makes a job dangerous that they want. Still doesnt negate the fact that it is the most injurious.

  • @mattdaley8181
    @mattdaley8181 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I see your comprehension skills are lacking. I will repeat. Yes, many do not die because of roofs collapsing. Only 25% of injuries are due to heat cardiac distress. The fact that most firefighters die of cardiac distress is only because cardiac distress is the most difficult to treat/survive. It is not a matter of "can't take the stress of the job". Then again, only 25% fall susceptible to it. Since only about 4% survive cardiac arrest, it is bound to the no #1 killer. It isn't the no #1 injury.

  • @mattdaley8181
    @mattdaley8181 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Still relying on lists you can't verify, huh? Fail. I have proven your lists wrong. Next.

      I really think that MrMarijuanaKills is bitter and jealous against firefighters. He's jealous of me being a firefighter. I say let him. Just makes him look like a fool. I also believe that he thinks he's entitled to be respected because he is a roofer. But the difference between firefighters and roofers is that firefighters save, help, serve and protect people. While roofers just build or fix roofs.

    They may not have a high death rate but considers by they are in burning buildings every day and/or on the side of the road pulling injured persons out of vehicles which make it a dangerous job as well but their body has a higher chance of gettin multiple cancers. Which in term is painful and can be deadly. So I salute you fighterfighters out there. God bless you!!

    complacency is a Firefighters worst enemy. My 1st year as a Kentucky firefighter I thought I was hot shit until I got hung up on wires in an attic looking for heat extensions then ran out of air, I've never been so scared in my life because reality hit really quick, I was in serious trouble. thank God for Motorola and my brothers because they came and got me before the heat burnt me up, the rubber to my mask was melted the antenna on my radio was gone. Excellent video. Every Firefighter should watch this entire video! Thanks to the Chicago Fire Department and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation for making this happen.

    A powerful film, but I think the most important words for fire service leaders are in the beginning, "What five things are you going to do on your next shift to assure the safety of your people?"

    And again, when the math is done, all of these numbers add up. So, any other source saying otherwise is simply incompetent. But of course, of the 40 plus independent ssources I have viewed, only 6 had even similar numbers. Such sources are not accredited in forming national occupational safety data. They do not adhere to strict standards and criteria for what they view as an injury, or how such injuries can be substantiated.

    The only reason more FFs die from heart attacks is because heart attacks only have around a 4% survival rate. Try comprehending, will you? Only about 25% of FFs suffer from any form of cardiac distress. Again, get this in your brain: cardiac arrest: 4-16% survival rate. Traumatic injury sustained by Firefighter: 97% survival rate. Thus, most deaths are going to be cardiac related. Still doesn't change the fact that only 25% of injuries are.

    And the bureau of labor statistics is the most respected institution with the most expertise. You are relying on media and independent articles. The death rate has everything to do with transport time. "most firefighters die of heart attacks, not roofs collapsing". Again, because when a roof collapses, rescue and ALS is there and they are typically rushed to the hospital within 25 minutes. "can't accept the fact that very few firefighters ever get injured". That's not a fact and I have proven so

    "then there would be more firefighter deaths". Hmmmmm......maybe because they're trained? Maybe because architects are now designing buildings to be less susceptible to collapse? Maybe because the collapse anatomy of a house is hardly such that would cause loss of life? Maybe because their rescue is right there (whereas with loggers, it's miles away)? Still stands: firefighters have 11,700 injuries per 100,000 (not 800). Loggers have 4200.

    Crossing patrol workers are HARDLY EVER killed when stepping into the street. Hence, the "don't have the potential for danger FFs do."
    Per every 800,000 FFs, 11,700 are injured on the job. More than any other profession. And why do you think I'm a FF. Because I support them? The fact that you have a problem with FF tribute videos clearly shows you are the drama queen. Stunt men don't have the casualties or injuries FFs do. they also don't do it to save lives.

    19.7 per 100,000 is not a percentage. It is saying that 19,7 people are killed per 100,000.
    You said it yourself : "just over 19 taxi drivers killed per 100,000 workers." Thus, the number of people. Not the percentage of them. Furthermore, when you do the math, that 19,7 per 100,000 equates to 6,560.1. Therefore, the statistic is inaccurate and that list you posted was not produced by very intelligent people.
    "...thinking you are cleverer." Cleverer? And you call me an idiot.

    My stats are given by organizations unrelated to the Fire SErvice AS WELL as one relating to the Fire service. Independent sources to not have the ability to accurately determine injury rates. Still, other injury rates I have gathered amongst other occupations also come partly from agencies related to those occupations. The fact is that these agencies are the governing body of these occupations and thus, are the sole authority.

    And so what? Cardiac distress is often part of the job. It is just another ailment that makes it more dangerous. And if you want Custers last stand heroics, a branch falling from a tree, falling off a roof, spraining your back lifting heavy trash cans, cutting yourself with a chainsaw or nearly any other work injury is not "Custer's last stand heroics", let alone heroic. A Firefighter running into a fire they know could suffocate them to protect life and property is damned heroic.
