- Co-curators of the exhibition Medieval Monsters: Terrors, Aliens, Wonders, Sherry C.M. Lindquist, Associate Professor, Western Illinois University and Asa Simon Mittman, Professor, California State University, Chico, will discuss the ways that medieval artists and writers demonized cultural outsiders, transforming religious and racial others into monsters, framing poverty and impairment as sin, and characterizing women as inherently deviant and dangerous. Focusing on medieval manuscripts illuminates the ways that these pernicious strategies are still in use today.

If you look at the tapestry for what it is it speaks commonly. Also, it is a strong assumption to place Africa upon any dark skin figure you come across in antiquity as it is in modern times as well. Its just not something professional historians should practice.

Interesting how the scholarship of a particular epoch reflects the social fashions of the time period. The scholars in this talk act as if othering is a concept only used by Europeans against other races. @kinsmarts I haven't read this author yet, but are you sure he mentions the latin equivalent to "race"? I know medieval authors used terms like "gens", "natio" and "gentes" , refering to something more similar to "people", "community", than race - as i read somewhere -, when referring to foreigners people (from a christendom perspective).

Their scholarship is questioned, even though they have both spent decades researching and publishing peer-reviewed material. Both presenters are chastised for failing to fit a comprehensive review of an unnamed number of presumably ignored manuscripts within an hour-long lecture. It is another attempt to further the myth of “the elite who are out of touch with reality” by reframing a presentation that is completely grounded in facts.

I myself had some brief talk with mister Asa Mittman through my email, he has all my admiration and helped me a lot back then, but we can't deny that some of his thesis - also some by authors like Jeffrey Jerome Cohen, quoted in the lecture - really adheres to teorical perspectives made by scholars like Jacques Derrida, Julia Kristeva, and even Jacques Laquan. They may be great scholars (who knows?), but when one applies some of their concepts to the Middle Ages, there's a high risk of annacronism, the same happens when you use Foucault's views of power applied to the Middle Ages, for Foucault worked primarily about the Modern age. I think it's very unprobable that the depiction of the monstrous races from the East was made to be read as a "colonial anxiety", an "imperialist desire" back in the Middle Ages, but we can read some similar assertives in authors like these. I don't deny that Mittman and Lindquist deserves our credit - Mr. Mittman has a terrific bibliography about monsters in cultural studies, i like him very much. Sorry for such a long text of mine. Mittman's techniques for this lecture span those invented by authors as well known as Jacques Derrida and Julia Kristeva all the way to Laquan. And whats so profoundly wrong with that is that those authors, who're essentially the stuff of modern academic populism, were versed only in the deconstruction of modern and post-modern social constructs.
To say that this lecture -sermon- is not a deliberate attempt to create a projected narrative for students to popularize in terms of considering the middle ages to simply deeped the historico-cultural assassination of Europe via white studies and CRT would be complete denial.
