30:30 that's a common misconception, Vulcans do have emotions but they choose to surpress them and operate only on logic. It's a long story but basically raw Vulcan emotion is so strong that allowing it to guide them almost led their race to extinction so they decided it was better to just focus on pure logic instead

Romulans are a genetically similar species, and look where not suppressing emotions got Nero. They feel emotions so much deeper than humans do that they developed ways to completely suppress it. They had to, to become a civilized population in their evolution

  • @RalphKruhm
    @RalphKruhm ปีที่แล้ว +142

Basically, you picked a nice starting point. This movie, the first of three in the modern era, starts the so called Kelvin-Timeline, a parallel timeline created by Nero's and Spock's travel into the past, which changed quite a lot. JJ Abrams did this so he could use the original characters while massively amping up the whole look. It's called Kelvin timeline because of the USS Kelvin, the Starfleet ship at the start that got destroyed by Nero, changing the whole of history. You can watch these three movies, and that's it for the Kelvin timeline. If you want more, you can look for a good entry point to the so called Prime Timeline in which every other Star Trek show and movie take place.
Originally, it started with an old TV show in the Sixties about the adventures of the Prime counterparts of Cpt Kirk (played by a young William Shatner), Spock (played by a young Leonard Nimoy, who of course played him here as his older version as well), and the rest of the whole crew you saw here. The show is simply called Star Trek and ran from 1966 to 1969. The show certainly looks old by today's standards, but it created everything that became the basis for countless more shows and movies afterwards. It's still the northstar regarding what Star Trek truly was: a series that allowed its writers to play and deal with dozens of importants aspects of society still important today. The Original Series had the first interracial kiss between a white and a black character on screen, it had a female officer on the bridge of a military vessel, as well as an Asian and a Russian, in the middle of the cold war. The show tackled racism, diversity, feminism, fashism, and multiple other topics through the disguise of a "silly SF show", which is why they got away with all of that. That also means that many episodes are very dialogue-oriented and slow, but there are also some fantastic action-oriented episodes. The show created a philosophy of an optimistic utopia, a vision of hope for mankind, which still drives most of its successors. Sadly, none of that survived in JJ Abrams' version. He took everything that he could make look cool and entertaining, and turned it into a huge action blockbuster that didn't care about canon, philosophy, or scientific logic. Many people think he did this because he actually wanted to direct Star Wars and considered this his resume ticket for it. The Kelvin movies are empty as fuck and lack the deep, intelligent storytelling of the original, but most modern viewers don't know that and don't care, because it's such a great entertainment for two hours because everything is fast, the editing is insane, and no one cares about planet-sized plot holes if you can't think them over. As usual, JJ goes for the cheap tricks instead of good longterm planning, which, of course, is the reason why he stepped out after two movies after he got what he wanted (Star Wars) and didn't really build something that could last.
What that means is, when you dare to try out the real Star Trek, you will probably be turned off by how SLOW it is, regardless where you start. But IF you want to try it, I would suggest you start with one of the newer series, Strange New Worlds. This one has GREAT storytelling while still looking modern and having some nice, faster paced stuff inbetween as well. It is insanely funny at times, but tackles great concepts and ideas as well. Plus, the crew is fantastic. The advantage is that you get the classic Trek storytelling in a very modern style, which SHOULD help you to get into it, and the fantastic Anson Mount plays a great captain: Christopher Pike (the same character who is Kirk's mentor in this movie). And that's the real deal here: The show is set on the same USS Enterprise Kirk gets to command in the Original show, but the story takes place a few years earlier. Spock is already on board (played by a new actor, but give him some time; he will grow on you), and as such it prepares you for what Star Trek really is, using a modern look, and IF you like what Star Trek is really about, and you're still interested after SNW ends, you can then start watching The Original Show and move onwards then with everything that came after.
Some people might tell you to start with Star Trek Discovery, since that show starts even a few years earlier, before SNW, and introduces these versions of Pike, Spock, and the Enterprise, but many people have difficulties with the show, so you might skip it. But if you don't mind spending a bit more time with Trek, Watch the first two seasons of Discovery. They are not that bad (to me), and then you can start SNW.
There are also six movies with the Original crew. Many people will suggest you watch those. If you do, start with II, III, and IV, since they tell a nice, complete story. But personally, I would always suggest to watch the Original show first and then the six movies.
Beyond all that, there is so much more to discover, like The Next Generation with Patrcik Stewart as Captain Picard and a much more modern Enterprise 100 years later. Deep Space Nine, that chronicles a brutal war between the Federation and, well, literally everyone else, but it makes no sense to watch it without having seen The Next Generation. Voyager is pretty much stand alone. Enterprise deals with the first Warp 5 spaceship, an Enterprise from 100 years BEFORE the Original series. This, too, is a nice show. But I would always suggest to start with Strange New Worlds and take it from there.

      @RalphKruhm ปีที่แล้ว +13

@@LordMesa Well, Star Trek has almost singlehandedly been responsible for developing my moral compass. It has inspired and changed the life of so many people. It's insane how many people became scientists because of Spock, doctors because of Bones, engineers because of Scotty. Martin Luther King called Nichelle Nichols to tell her how important it was to see Uhura, a black woman, as officer on a bridge - in the Sixties! People watched Star Trek and got inspired to believe in a better future. Star Trek brought many shy people out of their shells to meet likeminded people. It inspired the first fandom - ten years before Star Wars! It still inspires today. Gives hope. Its message is that we can succeed if we all learn to work together, not despite our differences, but because everyone is different and brings new ideas to the table. Diversity is our strength. So yeah... It's very easy to get passionate about it. And I try to offer a way into it that makes it a bit easier.

I think a few things are important to note about stuff you said about Star Trek The Original Series. ST TOS does have the first on screen kiss between a black woman and a white man and I'd always seen that fact touted as evidence of the show's progressiveness, but it wasn't consensual between the two characters and they were forced by telekinetic aliens in a disturbing scene. Before I watched the show I assumed it would be consensual like in a relationship context.
Also the show does discuss fascism but in a vaguely positive sense. The Khan ep (S1 E22) has the main characters in a discussion about Khan before he is unfrozen, they all (with exception to Spock) say dictator Khan was admirable and good and fawning over how strong of a leader he was. "I've always held a sneaking admiration for this one. He was the best of the tyrants, and the most dangerous. They were supermen, in a sense." Etc
Then the same happens in the infamous Nazi episode (S2 E21) where they denounce the Holocaust and yet say "Fascism, oh good idea but not the genocide part". The infamous exchange of Kirk: "But why Nazi Germany? You studied history. You knew what the Nazis were."
John Gill: "Most efficient state... Earth ever knew." (Absolute lie from Nazi propaganda btw) Spock: "Quite true, Captain. ..."
And the show creators disturbingly had the two main leads (both Jewish) dress in Nazi uniforms for the episode with all this nonsense 👀👀
With feminism, TOS says women can't be Captains in that one weird body switch episode. I barely recall two women ever having a conversation together, and googling shows there were only 7 episodes out of 79 that passed the Bechdel test and only 1 with actual main cast characters (Chapel and Uhura). Though it is quite cool that they had Uhura (black woman) in a position of command in the 60s.
As for racism issues... Khan Noonien Singh, despite his character being said to be from Northern India, is portrayed by a white male actor in brownface. I actually recognized him as the grandpa from Spy Kids.
The villainous Klingons are also white people in yellowface and brownface with put on accents, and they were described in script (ex. "Errand of Mercy") as "Orientals". Thankfully the Klingon appearance and characterization was changed later on in other ST media. And that's just issues from the top of my head

    • @RalphKruhm
      @RalphKruhm ปีที่แล้ว

@@jackg.1683 I think I mentioned that the show was made in the completely misogynistic, racist, communist hunting USA of the Sixties, right? So if you try to apply 21st century values to it, of course it will fail. And you're missing quite a few points. 1) Making the kiss non-consensual was the ONLY way to get away with it. It was still cut in many US states anyway. 2) Most times they somewhat praise fashism, they get their asses handed to them for completely underestimating its ruthlessness. And one of the best episodes ever, The City on the Edge of Forever, involves great personal sacrifice to AVOID the victory of fashism. 3) Well, what is better, having no women on a military vessel at all or at least have them there and quietly, professionally do their duties while the men have their little dramas all around them? 4) Brownfacing/Blackfacing was pretty standard in ALL productions of that time period. And then again, they have that episode with those racist people having black/white and white/black faces hating each other for having the white side on the wrong side. If that was no comment on the whole matter, I don't know what you're looking for.
Again, of course the show has problems, Kirk's infamous way of conquering women being the worst of them all. It's so bad that when they tried to have Pine's Kirk at least a little bit like the original they still got called out for doing it, like with that bra scene in Into Darkness with Alice Eve. But you cannot apply our current views to a show that's so old without appearing at least a little bit like someone who needs to point out the bad things in everything. Your points are all valid. But it's a bit like blaming an apple to taste like fruit.

He asks the sort of questions that are often asked in bad faith. Basically he thinks he's found a "flaw" in the logic of the film and is sort of demanding an answer that he knows he won't get. It's sort of snobby and lots of people these days do it. They interrogate movies like there's a quiz at the end for finding the most "flaws".
Often enough the answers are obvious things that the person misses because they simply weren't paying attention, or because they're ignorant.
This guy's questions are more like questions that someone who is very unimaginative asks. When they don't "get" how something works right away, they don't actually ponder the answer or pay more attention to the movie, they just hold onto that question and see it as a weakness of the writing. Like they just thought of something that "breaks" the logic of the film. Most of the time, it's simply a lack of imagination on the part of the viewer.

Really enjoyed the new Star Trek trilogy for the most part stinks about what happened to Anton Yelchin R.I.P. and as of now I don’t think they are making a 4th one they’ve been mostly focused on a couple new tv shows that are connected with the original Star Trek series and the old movies this trilogy is pretty much in a reset timeline so they won’t really connect with all of the other original shows and movies

Little detail: Olson was wearing a red suit when he died. In the Original Series, it was a trope that crew members in Red uniforms (aka 'Red Shirts') would be the first to die (except for the main cast, of course)

The reason Spock so easily overpowered Kirk is because Vulcans are vastly physically stronger than humans (on average, three times stronger). Also, their blood has copper-based hemocyanin (rather than iron-based hemoglobin like humans), which is why their blood oxidizes to green (though it should actually be blue, based on real-life examples on Earth)

Seb, Star Trek is so much more than a TV series, or a movie. It all started in the mind of Gene Roddenberry...if you haven't already, google him, and read up on his life. He was a fantastic human being. He started all the themes that are central to the Star Trek universe because he created it. A human race that in the future are more unified, and less divided by characteristics like nationality, color, sexual orientation, etc...and become more interested in being a species who become adventurous explorers. Since 1966, and after numerous TV series, movies, video games, conventions (including cosplay!) it is a fandom who are the most accepting, loving people who are dedicated to not only the characters, languages, races, planets, technology (real and imagined), the space ships, etc. Who see you as a person, not a color, etc....if you decide you like it, and slowly start to love it like we Trekkers (some say Trekkies) do...welcome, and have fun and ENJOY....Brian

Jeep had to change the shifter in future Grand cherokees after his parents sued Jeep.

the show is from the 60s and there have been multiple movies and reiterations (like deep space nine, next generation, discovery etc) throughout that whole time, and THAT'S why it was such a good idea to make these movies into their own splinter universe; so there can be echoes of the original canon but there's freedom to make their own stories. brilliant. also it should be noted that the premise of the show has always been about diplomacy and working together despite differences, so they ostensibly are always supposed to go into a situation looking to solve things peacefully and lawfully

The reason it's not goofy is mainly because Star Trek is Science Fiction whereas movies like Star Wars are Science Fantasy. If you watch the original show, it was rather prescient in its predicting future tech, from the square memory card (floppy disk) to cellphones. Also, a lot to the concepts, like warp drive, are based on scientific theories and postulations. Simply put, Star Trek roots its concept in the reality of science whereas Star Wars and the like root it in fanciful impracticality and the supernatural (the Force). That said, I enjoy both universes.

Can be useful to beam someone up when they've gone a fair ways back to find some ammo or grenades. It also means that if someone is searching around the other has to wait before the checkpoint to avoid teleporting them.

The (incredibly oversimplified) idea of how warp would work in real life is that a ship would bend space time around it. Think of it like unzipping space in front of the ship and zipping it back up behind it. The matter involved wouldn’t know anything happened because it would be also bent with space.
Actually, gravitational waves wiggle our space time all the time!

The Romulans(bad guys) are a race that broke off from the Vulcans a couple hundred years before. They are more warlike, where the Vulcans are more logical and purge their emotions. The best thing about this movie is how it keeps the original movies and series as cannon, by sending the original series/movie version of Spock back in time and creating the alternate timeline that these movies are set in. A very clever was to create a fresh lore friendly movie.

5:31 - actually, as Sarek said, Vulcans are very emotional, much more than humans especially agression. They lived as constantly warring tribes until a Vulcan named Surak started a movement for peace and self control. Now it's a foundation for Vulan society. Romulans are offshoot of Vulcans that don't practice self control.

  • @memesouls8653

The explanation for the timeline is that the older Spock we see is the one from the original Star Trek timeline (i.e all the TV shows) who, along with the Romulans, create a branch timeline which results in the plot for the modern Star Trek films and is often called the “Kelvin” timeline due to the fact the huge turning point in the events of the original shows is the Romulans showing up and destroying the Kelvin which gives Star Fleet access to new technology that makes them technology light years head of the original timeline hence why the Enterprise looks different from the show in the 60s. Old Spock is also played by Leonard Nimoy who is the actor who first played Spock in the original show(s).
Fun fact: Leonard Nimoy also voiced Sential Prime in TF3

    Red shirt dude dying
    Scotty being Scotty
    Sulu having a sword fight

This movie is a reboot set in an alternate timeline but the prime timeline still exists we know that because the new show Star Trek Picard is set in the original timeline and it mentions the events of the supernova old Spock tried to stop. The time-travel here is like Avengers: Endgame, where if you change the past you create a separate universe. The old Spock you see in this is the original from the TV show and older movies. In the prime timeline the planet Vulcan does not get destroyed, Kirk's father doesn't die when he's a baby and Spock and Uhura were never romantically involved.

As an Kentuckian who adores Doctor Who (I don't know how many episodes I've seen of Classic Who, perhaps only 50 or so, but I have seen all of NuWho many times), and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which I have performed onstage, I am chuffed that you enjoyed your introduction to the premiere American long-running science fiction franchise. Welcome to the Star Trek family!
This was a great place to start. All the principal actors nailed their roles, originated in 1965 by other much-beloved actors. Imagine 7 Christopher Ecclestons worth of anxiety... the pressure must have been off the scale.
The trekkies that I personally know, especially Gen-Xers like me who saw Star Trek in re-runs as children in the 1970s, adored this movie. The alternative reality timeline is worked into the story's premise in a way that freed the writers from the specific events we remember from the original series ("TOS") and the films that followed. But this movie is packed with references to the classic timeline, raising cheers from the audience that remember them.
At the same time, this movie gives new viewers exactly enough exposition to understand the bones of the Star Trek Universe. In the 23rd century, at great cost, humanity solves our problems, joins forces across international and racial and cultural boundaries, and soon begins to explore our galaxy, with the help of alien friends we meet along the way.
I don't know if Roddenberry had seen Doctor Who in 1965, but Star Trek shares much with Doctor Who: memorable heroes with strong moral compass, sharing adventures and growing, together.
That's what ST and DW mean to me, anyway.
"Live long and prosper", and, "for god's sake, Gallifrey Stands!"

It would take barely a few minutes to cripple a fleet of ships.

Leonard Nimoy as the original Spock's trademark was the eyebrow raise to express interest without showing actual emotions. And it was great that he got to reprise his role as the older original Spock. Also Spock's line to Kirk of "I have been and always shall be your friend" is straight from the original Star Trek movies from the 80's (which came after the original series from the late 60's).

We might actually do, i mean not in our lifetimes, but the technology that they use in the movies is actually possible.
Its not lightspeed or anything like that, its bending space.
Imagine space like a sheet of paper, and then bend the sheet so Point A and point B touch, or atleast get close, thats what it essentially does.

9:24 THAT CAR in the background is an Aptera. I have a picture of this car hanging on my bedroom wall.
It is the most aerodynamic production car ever designed. If you stick your hand out the window, your hand will create more drag than the entire car. It was originally going to go into production in 2009. But the development was rough, they hired a new CEO to save them from bankruptcy, he cancelled their entire design and switched to a traditional four-wheeled car, and then they went bankrupt anyway.
And then the two founders loved their original design so much, *they bought up all the old company's assets and reincorporated as Aptera motors.* This car has cheated death.
The design is now finished, and will go into production as soon as they are funded. Preorders are open now. I have never cared about the success of a project more.
It has 1000 miles of battery range. It's so efficient, it can add 40 miles of charge per day just from the solar panels on the roof. That's more than most people drive in a day, making it free to operate daily, no electricity cost at all except for longer road trips. Oh and it starts at $10k less than the cheapest Tesla. Read my username. I am recommending my competition. I HATE Tesla in comparison to how much I love this car. I will invest in Aptera and change my username as soon as the next class A offering starts.
