      The video promoting online TEFL was the first one I saw. But I definitely see the advantages of in-class training for myself. Is the Phnom Penh TEFL still being offered? My wife and are wanting to visit Ninja Academy next month, preferably in Cambodia, if it’s still open.

    Yea, this is ridiculous. I am taking an online TEFL course before going to teach in S Korea because they pay for flight and train you better than anywhere because of the seriousness of the culture and then I will go to Thailand for in person interviews to get a job there. I am not going to fly and have to spend money living in Thailand just to do an in person course.

    I'm usually very positive on your videos, but it annoyed me when you said that an online course "no longer cuts it". Perhaps that's the case in Vietnam, but in China that is very much not the case. Unlike a lot of the people who have a problem with you promoting your courses, I do not.... However, I do take exception to the inaccurate label that you're applying to online TEFL courses. I should know as I've just started my first ESL job on a $2500 a month contract with minimal hours in China with an online course that you don't consider worthy of wiping your arse with - and I know of people on far better terms than that. You are a businessman, and I respect that, but your judgement of online courses is both inaccurate and a touch self serving....

    • @ninja.teacher

      Hey Danny, thanks for the feedback. It's a tricky one because there are exceptions like in your case, and maybe I shouldn't use such sweeping statements like that.
      My main concern and reason for making this video is that these online TEFL companies market their courses as though they're going to help land people a job anywhere they want in the world.
      Then, we have people contact us on Ninja Teacher saying stuff like "Hey, I just got to Vietnam and am looking for a job. I have an online TEFL but no experience. Can you find me a job?" And the answer is, more often than not, no we can't. And I don't want people to land up in that situation. Schools want to see actual teaching ability more and more.
      But I hear your point. I'll try address topics like this in a more detailed and balanced way.

    I'm trying to decide which TEFL course to take and I have very little money right now. I typed in "which TEFL course should I take" hoping to find out whether it's acceptable to take a purely online TEFL course, as they're way cheaper. The first video that came up was this guy explaining why there isn't much value in having in class experience and unless you want to work for one very specific company, online courses are totally sufficient. I found it so reassuring and decided to take an online course. Then I scroll a few videos down and find this video of the same guy saying the opposite of what he said in the other video.... Unfortunately, this video is only a year old and the other one is three years old. Perhaps things have changed in the last couple of years and an online course "doesn't cut it" anymore (I hope not) or maybe your opinion has evolved and you've decided you were wrong before. But then you should take your old video down, because that made me so confident that a cheap online course is fine and I almost bought one based on that advise.

  • @ESLinsider
    @ESLinsider 7 ปีที่แล้ว +37

    I can't help but consider the bias in this video. You do make money from that in-class course right?
    As you mentioned you can learn about teaching by watching. You can watch teachers in a classroom OR on video.
    Online courses can be interactive too. It just depends on the course.

  • @MJBsays
    @MJBsays 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    Hi Alex, I find most of your videos very useful, but this one not so much. Maybe I missed something, but I did not understand the purpose of this video.
    Besides the Italian class' example where students understood what it feels like for a non-English speaker to be attending an English class, the rest of the video is just a sequence of "social" moments among students e.g. eating sweets, playing at the beach, having lunch together.
    Social moments are not a reason why a person should choose a class-based course above an online one.
    I obtained my TEFL online 3 years ago from a certified institution. At the time, I lived a country that was not offering satisfying courses, and after getting the online one, I was not disappointed, to the contrary.
    I did 160 hours and a good portion of the course modules consisted of watching videos of a real ESL teacher teaching to a real class of foreign students followed by a questionnaire I had to answer. I observed a real life practice, and I could return to all of the video material as much as I wanted to, which I feel is more useful than me practicing on fellow students in a class.
    Also, it depends on the student's disposition. Some people perform better by attending a class and interacting with the teacher and peers, others prefer the ability to study when they want and be able to concentrate when reading or listening to modules.
    With this said, I don't wish to put down your system, at the end of the day you are running a business, however as feedback, if you need to make a comparison between online and class courses, then make a valid comparison without knocking down one or the other, so that watchers can make a decision that suits them.
    That's my two cents, anyway.

      Michela J - You have given incredible insight to the online TEFL option, and I sincerely thank you for that. I do not want to go back to school to get my Bachelor’s degree which I would have to do in order to get employment in a classroom setting in Vietnam for instance teaching English. The online TEFL would allow me to teach from any country in the world including Vietnam, right?

    This video seems to have confused a LOT of people including me. As I understand it, people who are NATIVE English speakers who DON’T have time to get a 2-year Bachelor’s degree, can pay a much-reduced price to get an online TEFL course that will give them a certificate upon completion, and with that certificate they can get jobs anywhere in the world even if they and the company hiring them are not even in the same country. That sounds like a very sweet deal to me and is one I am personally exploring. Am I wrong about this anyone?

    I think that if you're only going abroad for a year to teach and the school doesn't mind if your certification is 100% online, online will definitely cut it. I decided not to do an online course because I wasn't sure how long I would be teaching overseas and I wanted to give myself the best chances of getting hired anywhere in the world. Different courses are good for different purposes :)

    It's a ploy to rob people... get CELTA or TEFL classroom training if you haven't had teaching experience before, but online is adequate if you have had classroom experience. I taught in china public school for two years, so I guess I've earned my stripes shoes in the teacher practice department. I also got an online 150 hr masters cert for good measure. Think CELTA is a waste of time if you have done classroom teaching and have been assessed by a governing body such as education bureaus.

    there are plenty of people doing online courses (Certified ) and getting plenty of work in Vietnam,and after a couple of weeks hanging with other teaches and cutting there teeth with the learning curve of actual teaching are as good as any ninja teacher as it is always experience that will make you a better teacher,and you probably have locked in a bunch of schools at a fee to funnel your new teachers across too so i think your clickbait titles and marketing to channel people into your business model and away from good online courses that are way cheaper for those on a budget is a little bit more about growing your business Alex,good for you but your being a little cheeky i think,and for anyone wanting to teach english no matter which way they go,if their hearts are in it then they will succeed,but your title for this vid is misleading and also there is the (CONFLICT OF INTEREST).......just saying as i found this title annoying !!!!

    Hey, just want a bit of insight. I just finished a TEFL course. It was online and one of the cheap ones, which I know is not the best option, however, I’m planning on teaching online (one on one) just more as someone to help people practice conversations. I am going to do it as a side hustle to help me live abroad and pursue my other career (music). I just wanted to know if in my situation, the course I took is a fine option. I felt like the course still taught me practical things.
    Of course if I were pursuing teaching English as a career I would put more money into a course, but I am doing it on the side. I do still find ways to get experience teaching such as teaching music. Of course since I am pursuing music, I'd do music courses in person.
    I just want to know your thoughts on the cheaper TEFL courses in that sense.

      Hi James, I believe the video you’re referring to is one I released over 4 years ago and I pinned a comment as well as updated the description to reflect that we no longer think this is accurate. The job market has become more focused on quality teachers and the days of backpackers coming in to make a quick buck are disappearing. While it still is possible to get an online cert and secure employment and “fake it till you make it” I’ve learned a lot since that time and believe in-classroom training is a huge factor when it comes to gaining employment, especially as most schools require you to conduct a demonstration class as part of the hiring process. That being said, with a bachelors degree, 30 hours of classroom training, professional presentation in your interviews and a decent demo class a fully in-classroom course is not essential.

  • @TEFLLemon
    @TEFLLemon 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Online certification provides practical solutions for TEFL teacher trainees still in full-time employment or on a budget. Some online certification programs are excellent. Just make sure that they are accredited courses and you'll be fine. I've just finished reviewing an online TEFL course and it was very strong on preparing teachers for the classroom.

    • @ninja.teacher
      @ninja.teacher  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Our experience is that in classroom experience is essential for gaining the practical skills and experience needed to secure a quality teaching job. We’re actually in the process of recording our entire 4 week classroom based TESOL course and may release it it in combination with a shorter classroom based training, but even then we’re not sure if we’ll do this due to how important in classroom training is.

      I can't really speak from direct experience with international schools but I think their hiring policies depend on a couple of things: (1) The time of year, they will start hiring in plenty of good time before the start of their school year (perhaps specific to the school on whether they follow the host country or the country they represent; (2) They might use an agency like this: www.searchassociates.com/ - where you might have to attend a fair (with the benefit of meeting representatives from a range of schools. I think those guys have a fair in Bangkok once a year and for most schools here in Thailand the year starts in May.
