It's fun to get better, learn specific mechanics, improve strategy, timing, understanding of positioning, hero drafts, etc. As well as becoming a better team player, surmounting into whether or not you win a match, which relative to your opponents proficiency in those things and that of your team of course. At least that's why Dodo(Dota 2) is fun for me.

But for one, the community for both is probably equally as toxic, and nobody in the MOBA communities DDoS. It also takes brain usage because of how unbalanced the devs make MOBAs, so you really have to know what you're doing or you'll get fucked. But yeah, you do get a bit more time to think of things in MOBAs, that is unless you're in a big fight with people.

This is pretty hilarious, honestly. Old institutions finally realizing that the videogames industry pukes billions of dollars and that there's regular E-Sports events followed by hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of people and now want to jump in and get a slice of that delicious cake. Also funny how they're only doing it for League players because LoL is arguably the one that can earn them more money. If they REALLY gave a shit they'd do something for the countless other genres like fighting games (just think about EVO championships) or any competitive FPS...but I guess they still struggle at understanding what a videogame is in the first place so they probably need a bit more time.

No. Just because you play something competitively, doesn't make it a sport. Me and my buddy having a competition "who takes the biggest shit" isn't a sport. Neither is playing games.
As someone who used to play Quake for money, MOBAs are not on the same level in terms of the skill ceiling. They're popular because they're team based, easy to get into and easily understood. It's a shame that they've eclipsed Starcraft 2 or even CS:GO in Western e-sports.
People who work hard in academics see people who are good at a sport and got a free ride and think how that just nullifies their hard work. Now people who play video games "professionally" get a free ride???? This is ridiculous. I love video games but come on man.

If they enter the team into the pro stuff and get somewhere at it, then thats where the college will make their money back. Yes skills in video games are almost the same, but most newer games dont require any skills to play, just press a button...
I love League of Legends but i have to partially agree with criticizing comments - it's not neutral enough to actually be e-sports, and it has some gameplay holes that make it a bit uncompetitive. example: at least half of games are one sided, there's no defense against trolls and bad players (or even those that just have a shit day for gaming, it happens to everyone once in a while). Finally, it's too strict on meta... every few months you have 20-30 relevant characters, they dance around minions for 5-10 minutes, then there are ganks and turret takedowns and then 2 teams chase each other all over the map until some moron makes a mistake, by half of the game it's usually already clear who's gonna win so all further 10-15 minutes is just pointless. Hopefully thanks to huge success of LoL Championships being true sport event, we might have some more competitive titles in future.
Bowling, maybe. However I know for a fact that getting very good at trap shooting is WAY easier to get good at then playing a video game at the MLG level. People loose there shit at people that can shoot clay discs with a shotgun repetitively. Guess what, its not hard. Once you figure it out, its who screws up less. I own guns and I shoot. I also play video games. Being good at first person shooters competitively, is WAY harder then shooting clay discs competitively.
i have met a talented gamer in pvp match online it was not present...i thought he was using god mode cheats but nop he was that good. i realized he/she might be one of those e-sports people. i rage quit and later decided to stalk him aka spectator mode all his games...and he/she was in fact that awesome.
