@@rifleman1873 Not sure where this happened, but in my state, you need to have an estimate authorizing any work over $100 and anything over 10% over the estimate. You as the customer have 3 options, I want a written estimate, I want to be notified if it'll go over XXX amount, or I don't want an estimate, just do it. In my shop I would NEVER allow the last one... I want a number at which the customer would want to be called. If they wanted me to "Just do it!" I'd say "OK, so if it's $25K to replace the spark plugs in your escort, I should just do it!?" Please, just give me an amount at which you want to discuss the cost so I don't exceed that. And no way in hell would I be paying for an unauthorized $2K plus "inspection".

True, but that only means you should win, with a good judge. It can still cost a lot to successfully defend.
And if you make any statement that's overly broad or not quite 100% accurate they can start winning partial judgments, even if you're still basically correct.

In our MOS school we are taught that military vehicles do not have the safety requirements of civilian vehicles. That means no crumple zones(in reality the entire HMMWV is the crumple zone, side impact protection, nothing. Just be glad it has doors, a rood, seats, and a windshield, because I have driven plenty that did not. With that said, like you stated there is a lot that has to be modified to meet safety requirements for on road use. I would put acorn nuts on the floor protector bolts though to keep the threads from getting all buggered up, also looks nice. I also have never seen that lock nut design for the hubs, is that a Hummer modification requirement because in the military we use a spider washer.

I got burned by VW yrs ago, took my Rabbit in for a new fuse box, it was $100 for the part and $200 for labour, got the call to pick it up 2 days later and the bill was $1300. Told them they could keep the car and walked out, came back at 10pm that night and stripped the cars interior, rims and GTI trim I had put on and sold it to my buddy who had the same car. Cops came and tried to arrest me but I produced my ownership and license and they asked me to just leave the property, a few weeks later they sent a guy by with a mechanics bill and a lien, since then I have learned you have to write on the bill that they can only repair what is signed for in writting no phone confirmations. Yrs later Chrysler dealer tried to rip me off on my Jeep XJ for a $1300 for the ABS pump that supposedly had failed, I told him to look at the bill regarding the pump, did I sign for it? lol, as I waited for them to bring me my truck they scratched my new hood with a floor broom and it was destroyed, they said it came in like that and refused to admit they did it, funny thing is I just got the Jeep back from a front end accident a week before and the hood and paint were literally just done and new. They laughed me out of the dealership, I told them I was going to smash their Prowler in the showroom one night but never did, and fun fact, my ABS was on a recall and was 100% covered by Chrysler so they tried to scam me for fun, I will never buy a Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep or Fiat from those crooks. Picked up a Hummer H2 from Cali a few yrs ago and haven't looked back, way better than all 7 Jeeps I owned over the years except maybe my 89 Grand Wagoneer 5.9l which was just as capable but not as pretty.

@ahmed fahmy -this is all dependent on which state or country you live in. Where I manage a shop at all you have to do is verbally inform the customer of and inspection and by them leaving their vehicle it is consent for that inspection. They don’t have to sign or anything. Just have to verbally tell them. With the police here it is a civil matter and police will not even show up. So I would make sure your check your states or countries laws on auto repairs.

@@YanMcCloud wrong. I’ve actually called the police on a shop that was trying to extort money from me in a similar fashion. I escalated the situation to the point of possibility of physical altercation, 911 dispatcher heard the cursing and shouting and sent 2 police cars in minutes. I demanded my property back, and cops sided with me even though they knew the shop owner.

@@bestman7776 again this is all state dependent like both my comments on this thread have stated. So if you are not in the same state as this supposed shop or same state as me with the other comment I made on this thread then you sir are wrong in the instance of where this took place. I can also tell you as a shop manager where I am from I have had one customer call on me and they were flat out told it was a civil matter and they would not get involved unless the peace was being broken. In your case the yelling and shouting. So make sure to note these laws are different state to state and country to country.

WOW! Unfortunately I know what you mean. My dad was a Dodge Mechanic In Boise Idaho in the late 70's. He quit because they were ripping off their dealer customers on repairs, like installing rebuilt engines and components and charging them FULL NEW part prices. After my dad refused to comply with the shop supervisor they gave him ALL the jobs that in the Dodge Time book per job that they knew took longer than stated. When he refused to claim a used distributor in customers car and list it as new, they changed it on the invoice as NEW, my dad packed up his tools and quit, then reported them. The shop went out of business and was bought out. We were a very poor family and it was our only income. I was very proud of my dad that day, even knowing it would severely effect our food and things we needed. He found another job and I went to work in a restaurant to help pay the bills. I never forgot that and have lived my life honestly ever since. Integrity can't be bought, it must be earned through actions. I hope you sue the pants off that company who tarnished your reputation to let other companies know you can't lie like that. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

I just had a shop do this type of thing to me! I've got a ram 1500 with long travel suspension, prerunner bumper, flares, headers, exhaust, and tires. I recently slipped off a road in a blizzard into a farmers ditch and it cocked the front tires back. The side airbags went off, the front fenders were cracked, but the rest of the truck didn't even have a scratch and it ran fine. A towing company came over and said they would need 2 trucks to get it out, but he told me he'd do it for the rate of 1 truck if I went with them, so I did. Of course they charge me double the cost for 2 trucks. Then the shop owners told me it was useless and I should just total the truck out... I only noticed the lca mounts were slightly bent. They rote a quote for over 20,000 of repairs including new bumper, steering wheel, two new frame rails, lighbar, etc. All which were in perfect condition. They said they wouldn't touch it m, and refused to fix it. They also contacted my insurance and sent them this quote without my knowledge and tried to make plans for the truck without my knowledge... I then planned for it to be sent to another shop. I asked the owner explicitly how much the storage fee would be after a 2 weeks and he said, don't worry about it I won't charge u since you are in and out. I thanked him. A week later I return to get the truck and they wanted to charge me for 2.5 weeks of storage fees 50$ a day (900$). I brought it to another shop and they said its an easy fix with no serious frame damage at all, and I'll get out on the road right away. Not that bad of damage. Some shops out there are just out to scam you like crazy be careful

The hardest thing or the worst thing about selling vehicles to customers is that you are going to come across a very few that you cant please. No matter what you do including bending upside down and backwards there is nothing absolutely you can do to please them. Thank God they are only less than 1% of customers. Adding to it, an out of state customer will drive back home take the vehicle to their shop and what happens, almost every repair shop will take the opportunity to not only bad mouth you but they will try to destroy your build. Then these customers will feel like they were scammed by you. I had a customer who bough a vehicle then drove it for 2.5 months then took it to do maintenance and then the shop did what this shop did to you. Story short you will never make everyone happy no matter what.

      (I'll try to link it: th-cam.com/video/HEcjo5tpYGI/w-d-xo.html )
In the video, he has a customer's car that has come in for him to diagnose a Check Engine light. The car had recently been at a different shop for its inspection and PASSED, other than the emissions issues.
When he looks under the car, the brakes are in terrible condition. But halfway through the video, he says it's against the law for him to file a complaint against the other shop. Only the customer can file a complaint. But the customer just wants to pass the state-required inspection, not pay for tons of (necessary) repairs.

I think you did a very good job handling that situation. It’s always tough as a shop owner to know when you need to actively defend yourself. Often, that makes you look worse, but I agree that this situation absolutely needed to be addressed.
In our shop, I’ve seen some questionable vehicles come through the door. Vehicles that I was absolutely certain another shop had taken advantage of this customer. I almost never throw another shop under the bus, because at the end of the day, I really don’t have any idea what the situation was at the time.
In reality, I don’t really need to sew seeds of doubt to my customer, they already had their doubts or they would not have brought the vehicle to me for a second opinion in the first place.
I suspect that if this shop wasn’t so vicious about going after you, posting these things online, and insisting to your customer that you were doing horrible things, there’s a good chance your customer would have simply gone along with what they were recommending.
Their attempt to build themselves up by tearing you down clearly didn’t make sense to your customer because of your character, transparency, and the way you conduct yourselves.
My opinion of the situation as a fellow shop owner, is a combination of monstrous ego by the owner who blasted you online, combined with technician and service advisor lack of knowledge.
I’m glad your customer decided to bring this back to you. We don’t always get that opportunity, so kudos to that owner for trusting you and seeking you out for a second opinion.

"Unfortunately there's unscrupulous people out there." I think that kind of sums up the auto repair business. Once had a service advisor tell me I needed new tires due to wear. (They were almost new with 5k miles on them). His response? "Oh, it must be the tech's tread depth gauge is out of calibration." Because the tech was blind too? And the aggregation of hours for work that can be done concurrently just boggles my mind. "Sir, that's 24 hours labor plus $2,000 in parts and you'll pay 5% for shop supplies even though we'll only actually use about $1.50 worth. You can pick it up at 4:00 PM today" Um, what now?

I won an Iron Planet / Gov Plant auction for a 1988 M998 military surplus Humvee with the upgraded 6.5L engine for 8100 bucks.
    It's in perfect condition.
    100% complete.
Got titled and tagged so I drive it to work every now and then.
I've dragged some huge logs across the farm with it, and I'm always the guy in the local area that gets called to pull out people that get stuck out in muddy farm fields.
I did upgrade it to the 10K axles, the newer style fuel sending unit with floor access panel to the fuel tank, and K&N makes a direct air filter replacement for that huge stock paper filter.
Everything else is stock, all original military, and works great!
Pain in the ass to crank with weak batteries so those recently got upgraded too.
Edit: I'm a Duramax guy too. LBZ and LMM, both deleted and EFI Live tuned.
The part about the computer from the fraud shop was a total bs claim, like everything else they tried to claim.
You can buy blank stand alone computers for Duramax engines and for the Allison transmission. I've done them. Makes EFI Live tuning much easier to play with whenever you want to.
Even the factory computer doesn't get bricked. All you need is the VIN read from it and get a VIN license from EFI Live and boom it's unlocked and you can do whatever you want with it.

My family ran a car repair shop. And hearing this makes me sick we would have customers who would go to other shops get a quote high dollar and it turn out that it would be a $50 part that we could take care of within our alloted 1hr inspection time so no extra labor would be charged. And like he said you u price labor a certain way to not have over lapping labor example. They come in for brakes and we find the rotors are out of specs well it calls for example 1.5 hrs to replace rotors then the labor guide would call for 1 hr to do the brake pads. We only charged 1.5 hrs because you have to remove the brake calipers to change the rotors at that point you just have to collapse the calipers and slap new pads in. Also our shop supplies were 7% of labor cost not to exceed $25 and there were time that if we charged what it actually was per the math shop supplies would be $75 (for exp.) but we never went past 25 because you honestly sometimes don't use shop supplies on all jobs. That other garage saw a person who owed a H1 hummer and figured they would make a payday. Still makes me sick to this day.

    Story time: the good one
i did my own research when i took my classics bronco transmission to get it rebuilt, then it took like 2 weeks, i called and asked why its taking so long, and the owner of the shop told me to come over, so i did and he explained the transmission was replaced from a 6 cylinder ford, which i believe cause the under side of some parts when i took it off where covered in RTV ! and he showed me everything in my transmission and i did my research as well and we had a great educated talk about what would he replace, what would be good for my truck and why the price was high, and he even took out 12 year old books for these transmissions and educated me on things i had no idea about, at the end of the day,KNOW YOUR SHOP!!
Dont take it to a random shop, know whats wrong with the car or truck, if you cant do it, how is the process and the price of the part is, so nothing like this happens! if you know 0 about cars, take it to the dealer, dont take it to a random shop you know nothing about
this is the worse possible way i seen some one scam a customer, for things that are 100% perfect just to sell them something cheaper with a 10k labor cost..just wow

Great video! Thanks for taking the time to put this out. Whenever I have any work done I always ask to see the parts or have them send me pictures of what it is they want to replace for evidentiary documentation purposes. Oftentimes, a shop will hesitate to send you photographs if the repair is not 100% legit. The fact that you guys would put together a complete detailed video of your work underscores the integrity of your operation. Bravo!

I grew up working in the automotive industry started at 10 yrs old mom and dad parts stores ETC been around since late 60,s .
I recently got scammed on F250 for about 19k through a local shop for engine repairs and now I have it my self found it engine builder shipped a new painted damaged engine with a large hole in the block .. this has become a costly experience because of a the trend of scam shops currently going on , back in my younger days the old timer mechanics in the garages I delivered parts to on my bicycle was very honest and spent hours learning from them about the business , now that all seems to be long gone though and now it's these scam shops ripping people off left and right , I'm out 19k and pulling money out my azzzz some how to fix this mess .. it's heart breaking that I got ripped off by 3 different mechanic's that I thought I could trust is it really this bad ?

in no way comparable to this 40k robbery, but my local mechanic tried to con nearly 5k for a new turbo, intercooler and hoses when the only issue was a single hose with a tear in it. 5 mins under the hood and done.

  • @astrorion6933
    @astrorion6933 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yup. Thats the whole reason why I learned to work on my own vehicles. Mostly so I could teach myself basic mechanics, but also because mechanics are vutlures. The one time i needed someone to service my truck, I took it to PSE in Houston and they quoted me $2,700 just to tear into my 2006 f250, then tack on whatever charges it may “need” in repairs. Alternatively they quoted me $13k for a new bulletproofed 6.0 engine with warranty.
Had a ford tech who does work on the side come and replace my fuel pump, fan clutch, and glow plugs. Mf replaced the pump and clutch, but got air in my lines and rage quit halfway through the glowplugs. I had to call off from work for a week to do it myself (i also needed to replace the filthy radiator).
And as it turns out, all that was wrong with it id a bad radiator and bad injectors. All that trouble for two things. I hate mechanics with a passion.

I'M SORRY, WHAT?? Did you say that they wanted 1300 dollars to CHANGE THE OIL??? WOW. I'm a woman that almost got taken for an $800 ring job on an old civic that was burning oil. It was just pure luck that I needed to reclaim the car to use before they had done the work and I ended up taking it to a family owned place called "The Bug Shop" where the very nice gentleman told me I had a leaky valve which would cost me all of $14 whole dollars. Didn't even charge me for the labor to put it in. I was grateful beyond belief because I would not have known how bad the other place was ripping me off on that , but even I would have told the shop to pound sand if they tried to charge me quadruple digits for a simple oil change or go to frickin Jiffy Lube! If I would have seen a number like that on paper I would have been asking what currency they were expecting ... perhaps Japanese Yen!

I get that Hummers are pricey rigs; portal gears, on board air for the CTIS system, plus all the other stuff for the Dmax conversion...but a $40k bill? They saw a potential cash cow and tried to screw the poor guy. Really glad he saw through it, this was insane.

This is just like the underground bunker manufacturers, one trash mouthing another, as a retired service manager of over 40 years in the biusness , the one doing the trash mouthing is the one to steer away from, shops that are confident in thier work don't feel the need to minimize compitition, they let their quality work speak and have respect for others in the biusness. The best way to tell if a shop has something to hide, us to see how fast they bad mouth other shops , and MM is a prime example of who not to trust

I don't know much about Hummers or Humvees but I have always loved them. Honestly, if I could afford it, I'd buy one from you any day. Your trucks look so cool! I have a question though, not about you or your business, but about finding off-road or durable vehicles. Do you have any ideas as to how to get one that's reliable and not too expensive? My fiancee and I live in Michigan and we don't have a vehicle at all. We just lost our only vehicle, a 97' Chevy Astro LT, and currently are left broke and without anything to drive. Sadly we had just got the Astro for $500 and spent close to a grand (maybe even $1.5k) in total, then the engine and transmission both blew on a hill. We currently can't get a loan or financial aid of any kind due to lack of income and credit score (I have all the income, but my fiancee has the credit and they won't accept my income as hers too.) If there's anything you could do to help, or any advice, I'd be very appreciative. Thanks to any and all comments I may get. Hope nobody gets upset about me commenting about this topic. Just running out of ideas and looking for help.

How can any company legally charge for a service if the work (inspection) was not ordered? (Can a company come to my house, clean the driveway, send me a bill, and expect to be paid with out a service request?)
