I was a little hesitant about the original announcement that Ariana Grande would be Glinda because I was like "pop star stunt casting" or whatever, but I genuinely forgot she got her start as an actor. I just watched a couple episodes of old season 1 Victorious and honestly, that early Cat energy could be a lot of fun for Glinda. Even if that's not the interpretation she goes with, she was a better actor than I realized.

Yeah I’m really curious to see how she modifies her technique for this role. Because I know when she was younger, like before her role as cat she had a pretty solid broadway technique. But in her recent broadway esque performances she still uses that pop technique.
I think she’s definitely working on that. When she was younger, her voice wasn’t so breathy. It wasn’t until she started doing pop music that her voice got like that.

It’s her incredible talent, she can sing in basically any way she wants (including impersonations) and she will absolutely embody the vocals of Glinda, a roll she’s wanted to play since she was a kid, she knows what she’s doing. And if the little teasers of her singing are anything to go by it’s going to be incredible :)

Also Renee’s main fanbase is within mainly the broadway fanbase as that’s where the majority of her success has come from so far, from being in Mean Girls on broadway, so it makes sense to stick with a broadway voice as that’s how she’s got popular so far, and changing quickly might lose the interest of those core broadway fans (Ariana’s change has been gradual over roughly 10 years). Like I said before, sadly a LOT of people just don’t like musicals/broadway voice so logically it makes sense when trying to become a global hit to attract as wide an audience as possible, to steer away from broadway voice a little or even better develop a signature/recognisable voice when you’re reaching for top 10s. Plus, there’s endless video evidence that Ariana hasn’t lost the ability to broadway belt or sing cleanly, if anything she’s improved her technique. And especially for Wicked, as she’s been a superfan since she was a kid, she’ll be trying to be the correct Glinda, and pay homage to the original, not try to make it an Ariana Grande-ified version. Sorry for the long ass comment but I find the logistics of the music industry so interesting and as both a broadway and Ariana Grande superfan I feel like I can comment on it :)
