When we were young, my wife would say, "It sure is going to be sad when one of us dies." Boy, was she right. After six years of cancer-hell she passed at age 47. She would tell me she felt worse for me than she did for herself. She was right about that too. This series hits all the highs and lows of trying to climb out of the morass that comes from losing your best friend and better half.

I miss the one single line which resonated with me the most. The scene where they sit in Tony's living room with the junkie discussing the idea of suicide. I think Tony in that scene understood that his idea of suicide seemed very childish in the eye of a person who literally had nothing to lose but his pain, and would genuinely, gladly end his own suffering when given the chance, and the one single thing which kept him from doing so was his own drug addiction. Then Tony handed him enough money to overdose on heroin and delivered the most powerful line in the whole show:
    "Don't waste it on food."

Outstanding writing from Gervais as per usual. He's a comedy genius and has a fantastically unique talent of fusing comedy and drama, something that is very difficult to do. The Office, Extras, Derek and After Life all came with lessons and brought comedy, but these scenes in particular from After Life portrayed some of the most important of life's lessons.

The video was supposed to be sad. The "gay" line completely rips you out of your emotional spiral and into a bit of comic relief. Which is beautifully timed in the show, but kinda defeats the purpose of this clip? I was holding my breath during that scene because I was so close to crying. And then... he said "gay" and the air evacuated from my lungs and I spit and gasped at the same time. It was wild.

03:08 That is a very accurate description of a major depressive disorder. Many movies or TV-shows describe characters as openly suicidal or constantly say how they want to kill themselves. People who are actually in pain and want it to end don't share their feelings until it's too late.

I absolutely love it how Ricky presents both sides of Tony's struggle so evenly and with such weight. You really grasp how Tony is feeling and why he's acting the way he does, but the fact that the PEOPLE, and I capitalise that because the people in it seem so real, around him are the ones to soak up his aggression, to get him to do something about his difficulties, if necessary call him out on his bullshit, and just generally be there to pick him up if he falls down... Absolutely incredible storytelling

This series is like a mirror. Hurt so much watching to the bitter truths about (my) life

I gotta say, this show has definitely affected my thoughts and emotions. I was in a very dark place. Still kinda am. I, too, wanted to off myself. But after watching the show, I was kind of like "it's not all about me". I can hate my life and wake up every day wishing that I hadn't, but I still can make others happy. And it's not like it takes a lot of effort. Just say a nice word, smile, try to relate with other people. I will die someday anyway, we all will. So I had the thought - why not just try to make other people happy, even in little ways, in whatever ways I think work? My life doesn't matter, but the life of others does and what if I can somehow make it better for them? Of course, there is no guarantee I will make anyone happy, to even a small degree, but seeing as there is no other meaning or purpose to life, I might as well do that.

I never got the luxury of being loved like this, something two of my exes has said still causes me depression was about the lines "you will never be loved and be happy"

You will be loved and you will be happy. It will come when you least expect it and with knock the air from your lungs but it will never leave. Fuck your ex’s, they walked out of your life with no intention of coming back so don’t hold the door open waiting for them to walk through it. Hope you feel better soon x

this struck a chord when i lost my dad last september, not for me so much but for my mum who had been married to my daddy for 52 years, they had known each other since they were children, the orginal teenage sweethearts, she didnt want to go on until she realised how much we still needed her, loved her...........its a double edged sword for Tony, he has lost his wife and now he is slowly losing his dad, he remembers the past like it is the present, he tells his dad he loves him. when we lose someone so precious we think we shouldnt move on or be happy again, that if we dare to smile or laugh its wrong, we feel like we are treading on the grave of our loved ones and mocking their loss, i feel guilty everytime i laugh, i know my mum feels guilty and its the little things she misses like sharing a tv programme together, or gigling at something incosquential, these moments are more precious than gold, worth more than all the sunrises in the world but we do deserve to be happy for the those have gone, we owe them that and what they have given us, to carry on what they have left behind. we are letting them down if we dont, i told my mum that, it took a bit of convincing at first, it doesnt ease the pain of loss,i cry everytime i watch this series, sheer brilliance of how it feels to lose part of yourself, i will watch it again and try and get it on dvd
