The saddest part of Tony's story is it seems - I think like most of us - we wait until we've lost someone before we become the best version of ourselves. The version we could have been for them.
There is much truth in that statement. After I lost my wife I had a tremendous amount of support from my coworkers. I didn't understand it in the beginning why people helped and stayed so engaged. I remember mentioning to 1 of the directors. That we have a lot of very kind and compassionate people in what is otherwise at the corp level a soul crushing company. He looked at me and said basically "they are like that because they believe that is what you would do for them". So sometimes we don't see it in ourselves because and it take others show us.
This is so true. When I lost my sister to Cancer a few years ago, I turned my life around. I quit drinking, smoking and chewing tobacco. I now help people and do things to make my sister proud of me everyday.

I don't think I realised until the character Joan passed away in the Derek series. Literally broke me. Looking back there were moving Brent moments and his Extras Big Brother speech is moving and poignant. A talent like Ricky's is once in a generation - just happy to have been here for it. Oh, and I was born in Reading too!
The moment she mentions her name is Lisa just made me bust into tears. The amount of acting he did to bring the emotion to that scene of trying to stay positive while almost breaking down is honestly incredible. Thank you Ricky
I like that idea, but in my opinion I don’t think that he actually lied to the kid, even tho he does not believe in a afterlife, he believes in a different kind of heaven that is life, where you can find real Angels like good people according to the speech of anne about them before that scene.
In a way I think it's a lie, but I also don't. I think in this moment, due to him being challenged to admit the cruel reality of his words, he would rather believe in heaven as a concept because his view is just too sad. So yes, it was for the kid he said it out loud, but it was also for himself. The kid let him know how upsetting his view was, briefly altering his perception of reality to accept the possibility of heaven. The kid acted as a gateway to accept something he never normally would, even if it's briefly. This is the kind of moment that'd stick with someone for the rest of their life, so I doubt he'd go back to being so against heaven after this moment.

Lenny was such a quiet angel and good friend . The way he looked at Tony in the hospital when the children talked to him 🤗. What did he see in the lens of his camera in the final shot 😢
I think what he saw wasn't any different from what he captured only he realised what tony meant by saluting him and by that little nod as well, every time lenny would take a picture he'd do it for the story he'd formally say "smile" Before taking the picture and this time he said smile instinctively when he took the picture but after tonny nodded at him lenny realised that this would be a picture for another story perhaps the final story that tony would be a part of and it'd be his own.
My wife and I binged "After Life" and so didn't know that was the last episode until were crying like babies. We were taken completely by surprise and knew this was the end when we were soaked with tears and hope. "I've looked at life from both sides now..."
1:23. Chokes me up suffen rotten. Imagine being that person. The person you love is dead and the tape in your head just replays your cynicism taking hope away just when they need it most. Brilliant acting and writing.
When my little sister was killed at 20 years of age, my mum, my brother and I said that we would tell each other how much we loved each other and would never not work things out of one of us was upset, not leave on angry words. We always hugged and said 'I love you' and saw each other despite distance. When my bother fell ill he stopped talking to me and I kept writing him to tell him that I loved him. Before he died his daughter told me that he would sit reading my letter and crying but still didn't phone. I call my mother every day and see her as often as I can as I live abroad. She is 90 and knows that she won't be with me for long so we make the most of it. I loved this series, love Gervais, so much depth.
Thank you Ricky for giving us this brilliant gift. I am a retired pediatric nurse with a Master's degree in Oncology, and you hit each and every nail straight on.RM
I'm so very sorry for your loss. I know that's probably the last thing you want to hear but I don't know what else to say. I know what loss feels like but I've never lost a wife or a husband. God bless.
Tony being an atheist and telling that child, dying of Cancer, that he definitely believes in Heaven, after thinking about it, just to give him comfort, when he’s normally so blunt, just beautiful. Gets me everytime.
30 year old man I am and the scene when the kid says or when I go to heaven absolutely broke my heart. It hits home so hard when you have children their age which i do and it hurts to know the parents and family have to go through this. If I could switch my place with these beautiful young kids so they could live a full life I would in a heart beat.
I had my own Lisa, she didn’t die she ran off with my best friend, the pain I felt and still feel is like nothing I wish on anybody and watching this knocks the wind out of my sails, such a beautiful series.
show strength , you have nothing prove. This is the time you fall back to your character. You still have your life and character and you can not throw that away because you are feeling sad and depressed over someone who does not have any. Put a period to this and get a life that you always wanted.
The laugh when he says “yeah!” And the crying along with it has brought tears to my eyes every time he interviews the little girls. I’m such a fool for watching this again and again.
This show was so profoundly beautiful, and written perfectly. You'll need one bucket for tears of laughter, and another for tears of sadness. Throughout the entire show I found myself looking inward.
An absolutely incredible piece of writing that pulls you in all directions and ultimately makes you fully appreciate what you have. Thank you for letting us be part of this Ricky Gervais.
My partner and I watched this whilst she was going through treatment for breast cancer, it fecking hit hard, her surgery, hair loss etc. We’d binge watch and be sobbing all the way through it, fearing the worst. Fortunately she has had the all clear for 2 years now, the Afro of chemo curls is a small price to pay. Great series that puts things into perspective!
The fact that his character shift and dynamic from episode one to the end shifted this much makes for a beautiful story to tell. That no matter how hurt you believe you are nothing in the world can make you better until you start to make the world around you better, which is exactly what Tony did. Perfect show, with a perfect representation of how to deal with the pain of losing someone. I’ve been there, and this hit really close to home. What a show.
Most people know Ricky Gervais for his stand-up comedy but he is an even better actor, writer, and scriptwriter. This series is maybe the most moving work ever put on the screen. I have many of these scenes memorized and they leave me in tears every time I see them.
Ricky bought me peace whilst suffering grief myself, he opened peoples minds to disabled and the elderly though derek, made people respect animals, he also destroyed the fakeness of holywood, for me the best famous person ever, he was in a cheesy 80s band to, very clever man with heart hed be a saint he wouldnt want it though, a realist long live Ricky gervais.
I was never a fan of Ricky Gervais, but after watching "After Life" I've changed my mind! I laughed, but I cried a lot too. It's such a beautiful story. The ending was a surprise for me, but I got it too... Life is never a neat little package tied with a bow. Thanks for a beautifully written series RG. 🙂😢😊
I truly believe that Ricky Gervais will come to be regarded as one of the foremost writers and actors of his generation. His skill, his range and his enormous talent are extraordinary. He portrays the depths and peaks of our human experiences with such sensitivity and care. Outstanding.
This entire series captures, kindness, empathy and compassion at many moments to a tee. The awareness and insight of grief and its complexity demonstrated in depth so well. Highlights the profound impact of the generosity of one's heart.Thank you!
I think Tony Way's looking at Tony when asked questions by the children on the cancer ward is so powerful. Knowing the impact of the girls name also being Lisa and the fact Tony does not believe in Heaven will have on him emotionally. Shows he was a really good friend. Fantastic show about the struggles with grief and loss
I love Ricky, he’s absolutely hilarious - but his genius extends way past comedy and can take my breath away with these heartwarming/heartbreaking scenes too. I haven’t seen much of Afterlife, but even just watching this I had a tear in my eye, especially the scenes with the little kids 🥺🙏🏼💔 Cant watch an episode of Derek without crying like a baby either... Whatever magic it is that Gervais works in these moments never fails to have an effect on me. 💖👏🏼🥰 Just one of the many reasons I love him!
I lost my wonderful husband in 2014. He was 50 years old. He’d had a minor surgery, had a blood clot break free, and three weeks to the day of that surgery, he died. 14 minutes was all it took to crush my life to smithereens. I never got suicidal, but I was indifferent to living, for a short period of time. Until you face an empty house for the first time, or worse yet, your bed, you really cannot know what it’s like. But life waits for no man. You HAVE to go on. You can wish for things to be different, but the sooner you realize this is YOUR new normal, the better. Love your mate, live for today, because tomorrow is not promised to any of us, and talk about EVERYTHING, that way there’s no regrets. The best gift my hubby gave me was the strength to move on, without him, because we can’t live our lives looking back through the rear view mirror.
What a wonderful quote. I'm lucky in that I haven't lost and immediate family member yet. (grandparents aside). Sometimes I feel like it might be me first. I see your post and think to spend more time with my family however my best intentions are, I go to work for up to 70+ hours a week to make it work for my family thinking that it may all be in vain. realistically, it is ALWAYS in vain as we all have a limited time on earth. I'm still torn in how to conduct my life..
@@DJTEMEKA all I can tell you is no man ever arrived at the last day and said “Gee, I wish I worked more!” Only YOU can control your time. Start by setting a time to turn your phone off at night. My hubby used to take mine, turn it off, and say you’re on my time, and I don’t share it with anyone. I’ve waited my whole life for you, and 100 years won’t be enough time with you.” You then can start managing to take a regular time to QUIT work everyday. He left me fairly well off, but honestly I would have given it all back and taken out a long term loan to have him come home. Start practicing saying “NO” in the mirror shaving in the morning. You have no idea how much home starts to mean to you and your wife when you make her the priority. Good luck. Hugs ❤️❤️❤️
Absolutely brilliant! In each of every 30-minute episode you will laugh, cry, love, think… One of the best works I’ve seen in many years. Perfect performance of the actors; scenarios, music… just SO touching, and yet, you’ll feel great after each episode. At the end, we should at least we should have learned to look around and see the “angels” we have in our lives and enjoy every single minute with them. Great work and thanks to all the team. Thank you, Mr Gervais!
I found it difficult to watch not because it was bad but because it was so good at portraying nearly every emotion we go through at the loss of a loved one and the hope we have to give others even when we don't feel hopeful for ourselves. Ricky Gervais is such a talented man and he deserves all the success that comes his way.
I don't think i have ever seen another series that made me laugh or cry so much within the same episodes as Afterlife. Ricky Gervais is for me one of the most talented writers, actors and comedians the world has ever or will ever see. Just this short snippet had me blubbing like a baby all over again but i am so grateful for his work as i know i am human.
This show hits me in every way. His deep breaths when thinking about or watching something about his deceased wife. Not caring about death anymore. Getting annoyed when people talk about you meeting someone else, like you can replace your wife and best friend. I miss you so much, Eva my love. I hope someday we will meet again...
My dad died a little over 3.5 years ago. I miss him every day, and I still can't believe I will never see him again. He didn't "go" anywhere. He didn't "pass on". He simply ceased being. But he lives on, in my memories of him. ❤
This show literally changed my whole perspective about life because of Ricky Gervais, even though im still young and im at my late teens now and i cant bare the fact that when times continually goes faster as i get older and seeing my loved ones are getting also older with grey hair and their bodies are worn out in their primes and cant able to do stuff they want since they're younger. I'm probably gonna change my social circle after this and im stepping out of mg comfort zone that i want to do things i really go after it until its over.
When that little kid asked if he believed in heaven and he took a second and said "definitely" made me bawl my eyes out, still does. Tony has grown so much since the start of the series and that for me was the moment when he completed his transformation.
This series is the single most stunning piece of television I’ve had the pleasure (and deep abiding pain) of watching! I frequently go back to watch it again!
A masterpiece, a masterclass. From laughter to tears in a heartbeat, how a comedic genius produced a truly spectacular series. A representation of life. Tears, happiness, sadness in the blink of an eye. Thank you
The part when tony said I'll come every day until you're better and then the little girl said or until i go to heaven really got me i started to burst out in tears 😭 i feel so sorry
Comedians are often times some of the best drama actors you can get. There's so many times people are shocked by raw and real performances from actors known mostly for comedy. Robin Williams is another big one that comes to mind.
I loved this series! It is one of the best I have seen in years. Most importantly because the characters were so real and well interacting that I really cared about each one of them and shared their joy and sadness. The topic was relatively depressing, but at the same time important and not often adressed.
I totally get this. My wife died in June 2021. It's been well over a year now, and I feel the same way. About the only thing that keeps me from suicide is the four cats (a mother cat and her three kittens) that my wife and I rescued in 2019. Even when she was in the hospital or, later, a nursing home, she would always ask me "how are the kitties doing?" So I have to take care of them now. Other than that, my life's pretty much over. I live like a recluse now... my only contact with others is with store clerks.
Please don't beat yourself up. Right now you have a grey vail over your eyes, live for the kitties, you will realize each new day will soothe you. Just don't rush it.
I remember coming up to an accident in New York one day. People just driving by. I saw a mom holding her little daughter and crying leaning against her car. I blocked the lane with my car and then got out and comforted them as much as I could. I was reassuring and told them that the ambulance was on the way. Once it got close I told her I had to go to make room for it. She grabbed my arm and asked if I was her guardian angel. Took the wind out of the sails for me. I almost lost it. I said I am just someone who cares and you'll be okay. Then I left. Never saw them again.

@@xeno2213 If you read the Bible, it basically says this. This is our life. And the thing is, even if you believe in Heaven, that isn't being alive. That is an entirely different state of reality and being no matter what it is. And we don't know what that is and it is scary.

Lenny is that friend everybody wishes they had
It must be hard to find true friendship when you're well-known, a celeb, or even just wealthy. So many agendas...
My wife and I binged "After Life" and so didn't know that was the last episode until were crying like babies. We were taken completely by surprise and knew this was the end when we were soaked with tears and hope. "I've looked at life from both sides now..."

Masterpiece isn’t a good enough word to describe this , Ricky had us all in floods of tears most emotional tv I’ve ever seen !

I'm so very sorry for your loss. I know that's probably the last thing you want to hear but I don't know what else to say. I know what loss feels like but I've never lost a wife or a husband. God bless.
I'm so so sorry 😞 😔
Just finished the 3 series for the first time, one of the most beautiful things I’ve watched
Completely agree. Me too
The bit with the little girl with cancer got me. My wife is a children’s end of life nurse and showing that this goes on was very moving.

I laughed and cried throughout. I've never seen a tv show that affected me so. Magical.
The scene with the bald girls broke me and then you have the moment when he talked with the boy with cancer and that just beat me while I was down
Most people know Ricky Gervais for his stand-up comedy but he is an even better actor, writer, and scriptwriter.

The angels conversation is by far my favourite scene
4:40 is when the tears were triggered. The acting and the background music hit just right, beautiful moment ❤️
Omg do you believe in heaven Tony's face when he said definitely. Such compassion
I think this series touched me like no other . Cried in almost every episode
100% like nothing before
I think Tony Way's looking at Tony when asked questions by the children on the cancer ward is so powerful.
Integrity.
Can we just talk about the last word said in this series. It was perfect. The "smile" is like a reminder for you to be happy.
Lost my wife to cancer ,this skit is brilliant and beautiful ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🇨🇦
Lost my husband nearly 13 years ago.
Still devastated. Take care x
Seeing this after my own wife passed away definitely hits you different…
I hope you found happiness in your journey through life

Good luck. Hugs ❤️❤️❤️

In each of every 30-minute episode you will laugh, cry, love, think…
One of the best works I’ve seen in many years.
You would think somebody would have to live through exactly what his character does to write so many profound lines
The way Lenny looks at Tony during the interactions with the kids is so touching.
I keep viewing the scene when Mike says "because she's lovely." Such an innocent yet powerful three words.
I can't believe how talented this guy is , really talented and a gift.
The most touching show I have ever seen. Lost a loved one at the time it came out. So many home truths and emotions 😢❤
I cannot watch an episode of this without sobbing. Really.
The story, the script, the feelings, emotions, learnings, and music score! What an amazing show! ❤️
I'm probably gonna change my social circle after this and im stepping out of mg comfort zone that i want to do things i really go after it until its over.
wishing you all the best. Hope there are people to support you in your journey, and share your journey. Keep in touch

One of the most brilliant shows Ricky Gervais has ever made in my opinion. Watched the show multiple times.
A masterpiece, a masterclass. From laughter to tears in a heartbeat, how a comedic genius produced a truly spectacular series. A representation of life. Tears, happiness, sadness in the blink of an eye. Thank you

The saddest part about life is when the person that gave you the best memories, becomes a memory.😭
I can’t imagine watching it again, because just thinking about it breaks my heart and I start crying like a baby. Already crying
You're like season 1 Tony, I'm sure you'll get better and happier and be like season 3 Tony
I hope that your world will open up again.
