" Sometimes people are scared to play defense because they're scared to get shifted, scared to get their ankles broken.. but what you got to understand about basketball is that basketball's a game of mistakes. " Realist shit I've ever heard
Yup! Me too, I was a good defender before, 'til I got crossed. Now, I'm like James Harden (sorry for his fans lol). But that statement of him made me realize that my thinking was bad.
william chen no no no and you know when no ones guarding someone and that person is left open. Then when he's going for a shot you jump as high as you can and he makes it over you, then them mofos be like: "OOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHH"
I improved my defense and my offense improved too, in games I concentrate on defending stealing and recovering the ball and passing, and what do you know my coach made me a starter and all the other players in the team respect me now, defense is a first before offense for real
Empath 97 seriously. I used to think offense first and defense second. I’m a lockdown defender and a decent offensive player now, because I’ve realized how valuable defense is, so I can be good on both sides of the ball.
what about guarding guards that are great at creating their shot, but also finish hard at the rim. Another tip is as a PG, i usually have to guard the best ball handler on the team, to do that i usually pressure them beginning from 5 steps behind the 3 pt line even their not good shooters, but i NEVER go for the steal, just stay with them and contest their shots. In the long run, it tires them out and they have to go to the bench. It also helps to have one hand following the ball all the time and th other hand blocking one of the driving lanes and making your stance bigger. When im guarding a bigger guard offball and he tries to get a position in the post, try to time how often hes bumping u and then try to give him a lil bit of rim so they knid of lose their footing, and just slide infront of them so that the team cant get the ball in the post without u stealing it. when the player actually has the ball in the post, alot of defenders try to use their arms/upper body to push them out, but thats wrong, u should be leaning into them, one foot infront of the other, with ur legs behind u and use your lower body/leg strength to push them back (i learnt that from tape of dennis rodman guarding bigger guys like shaq) but still watch out for the spin. And when they fade, NEVER JUMP, but get into their face, contest it, and get your feet into a position where they cant fake then cant go up and under, and force them into a bad shot.
The Boss please explain how to watch out for the spin if you're fucking leaning into the person. Remember the guy you're leaning into is big, One nice spin and you're all gone.
Hey Howard I practice alot of moves but when I'm in game and have a chance to do the, my mind is blank and I have no idea what to do can you help me build up my IQ and know what to do
Karl Marc If you're gonna close out on a shooter, NEVER, and I mean never, jump straight at them. Only do that if you know 100% that they're gonna shoot. If you think they're gonna fake or drive, as you get close to them, hop into your defensive stance, low enough that you can still jump high enough to contest, but low enough that you retain that explosive power you built up to go sideways if he drives.
going to the next level of basketball college /pros becoming the player that coaches want to see also make motivational videos and tell us about your background I Have A LOT OF IDEAS!!!
When you said people don't give effort because they are scared. That's 100% true. I used play defense every play but never do anymore. I'm to worried about what people think. I've finally overcome that and I play defense again
I love the way you explained effort because I've noticed that for so long, people are scared to get crossed so they don't give effort... I've got my ankles broken and everyone got excited but when I looked back at the play it was a 3 on 1 break, effort
I deadass just needed you to say, "people are scared to defend because you can get crossed up, basketball is all about learning. " That shit helped so much
this is the 1st video on defense I've seen that address shifting of the hips to run to catch up and then getting back down in your defense stance. Great job homie!
Somthing I do is. Never jump. And somthing idk if anyone does, but act like your gona reach a lot , a lot a lot a lot and they will dribble the ball off there foot or put it in a easy position to steal. But I don't like to go for steals. One more thing is instead of putting your arm straight up when they shoot aim it at a angle towards them like a clock on 9:45 you won't block the shot like you think but it will make them shot had from your hand so close, they will try to advoid it
I watched someone else and they said "keep your hands moving at all times" in which I thought reach they didn't fully explain but thanks to you ill make tryouts today with a better understanding 💯
IsaiahDoesGame yeah like he said dont be afraid I'm great at defence and stop aloy of plays but occasionally someone might cross you up it happens in games all the time but as long as you show effort it won't matter
I thought all your thoughts in this area were informative, and helpful! Thanks for the help! I do think any player should defend on the shooting hand side, because they have to come back to the shooting hand when help defense is involved.
body up on them with at least one arm up and try to not let them get their feet or hips around you and if they go for a turnaround then get your arms up as fast as you can but don't leave your feet leave your feet until you know they are going to shoot especially if you have long arms your best bet is to put your hand in front of their face and just block their view of the rim for guys that like to power their way in do anything you can to not let them back you down and be ready to strip the ball if you can get them to face up or expose the ball
IronBannanna if they're bigger keep moving ya hands and really have ya fouls are an issue but 90% of bugs are bad on the line or if they're not to big bump em and go hands up till they go for shot then jump but ain't to keep the block inbounds
If they have a major height and size advantage.. Get really close and grab their jersey (for like, one second).. it's illegal, but the ref wouldn't notice coz your body is blocking the view.. Now, the guy is going to be distracted. Go for the steal.. since you're smaller and quicker, you have an advantage.. Pro tips from my high school coach 😂
I always think being a great defender has a lot to do with where your eyes are if you watch the ball and someone has good handles they'll blow by you gotta watch those hips
GREAT SHOWS!!! Well done. I'm watching this for the first time on the TV...and You are Killin' it! Keep doing your thing...and I like your moral approach. How about some shows for "The Big Man"...? I know it's all in there...but something directed for "Big Men"...might get you some fans. Thank You. Sincerely, Robert
Hi coach howard :D I was one of your very first subscribers and you really helped me especially on the defense. My Defense is amazing compared to last season, I averaged at least a steal or a half this season.I force turnovers at least 2 times a game
Thank you so so so much! I always watch your videos and I think this one and the post moves one are my favorites. Keep up the good work pal! I hope this encourage you. 😁😊
im a stretch pf so what i use to create a shot is that i'll in n out, cross backwards and then stepback and if their still on me i'll throw and shift fake or basic you shift your weight/ chst upwards and throw a head fake without rising on your feet, that'll definitely get you open or get them jumping. Another method i use is i dribble behind my back to my left hand while moving to the left and then sidestep or take a quick hop to the left and shoot and if they're still on me I drive and kick out or finish. Another move i'll use is i'll A.I cross behind a screen and stepback, some times i also create space on the pre dribble by jab stepping, pumpfaking ,taking one or two dribbles forward then cutting back. But I hope this helped
also a way to get your defender on edge or on their heels is to keep moving and dribble based on their movements. Also a way to easily make your defender get his feet tied up is to drive on your best side and wait until he turns his hips and runs with you then immediately cut back, he won't have time to react an get re set before your 2-3 feet away from eachother
Even if your undersized drive. If you can't blow by stop on a dime pump fake and step in. It will get you. A lot of open shots and free throws. Yes I'm an undersized SG too that doesn't like to shoot
Aye for real man i learn alot from you. Keep up the great videos. Your information and tactics are very useful and actually help me very much in game situations!
Also "Eyes". Being locked in on your man with your eyes is very important. Me personally I guard the best when I'm just looking at my man with the ball and not worried about picks.

But I'm glad you mentioned Effort!!! BTW keep up with the good work man..
Just starting watching recently coach! Appreciate the technical tips and coaching but also your lesson on hard work and effort. Much love from a new subscriber👊

If He don't touch the BALL he can't hurt to. Even in a zone defense you want each player to have a busy body mentality. Eyes on the ball and man with active hands swatting what ever come their way.
One thing for steal techniques is to keep one arm low and other arm up. Stick close to them but avoid slapping them. If they pick up the ball if they get pressured stick close to them but don't piggyback on em. Just stick close. Read your opponent's moves.

one hand should always be on the ball, mirror the ball. Don't over play the guy, unless you are more skilled. move you feet side to side! anticipate where he/she is going and beat them to the spot. Your goal is to force them to their weakness, if he can shoot, do your work in the beginning deny the ball, don't let him/her catch the ball with ease, make them catch it some where their not comfortable/farther from the rim. If you know they like to take it to the rim, sag off a bit and force them to drive to their weaker arm.
Thank u coach I used to be just an offensive player now I'm a all around player stats:10.1 ppg effort infinite thank u again for helping me out coach howard
1. spread your arms out as long as possible. 2. Stay on your toes. Getting on your heels is the best way to fall back and get crossed up. 3. Be aggressive and get close. 4. Keep 1 hand high and the other near the player. 5. NO LAYUPS MENTALITY, OR EASY BUCKETS. 6. EXPOSE THIER WEAKNESSES!!!
new to ur channel dunno if u have a video on it, but i'd like to say i'm a decent defender, people get their shots off sometimes or i'll get layed with contact occasionally but i have people sweating and tired etc, but today was my first time playing ball in a while since i lost hella weight and i got dropped by a big pushoff, not like i got shifted but , i'd like to see a video on defense vs players that like to pushoff , i know there are various factors like size, screens etc but idk u make good videos just a thought
" Sometimes people are scared to play defense because they're scared to get shifted, scared to get their ankles broken.. but what you got to understand about basketball is that basketball's a game of mistakes. " Realist shit I've ever heard

idk, maybe i'm just a clamp god

When I'm out on my own goal I make these crazy shots but when I'm out with others I can't do it, recommendations?
Practice more on other goals bc you are used to the specific height or proportions of your own goal
confidence it's all about confidence
Wild Cat Practice shooting with people in your face. Also, a lot is confidence! Keep practicing, and maybe practice at a game pace!
set your own shot clock and have someone guard you and you will perform the same as you would in the game

1. spread your arms out as long as possible.
I would like to see video on how I should be sliding my feet and what to do if I get beat half court. Good stuff though
new to ur channel dunno if u have a video on it, but i'd like to say i'm a decent defender, people get their shots off sometimes or i'll get layed with contact occasionally but i have people sweating and tired etc, but today was my first time playing ball in a while since i lost hella weight and i got dropped by a big pushoff, not like i got shifted but , i'd like to see a video on defense vs players that like to pushoff , i know there are various factors like size, screens etc but idk u make good videos just a thought
