    Awesome to see this idea return to the channel and in a prettier guise as well ;). You suggested that drain shouldn't be a problem on this car, but it was with the original pack and IIRC you added an LFP battery to keep it topped off. I look forward to seeing how this holds up if the car goes a long time without starting.

    Oh yeah that video of yours 10 years ago was an inspiration to do it myself. I currently have the same 6x350F now in my 3'rd car (They are expensive in Europe and no second hand ones available). Have a 10W solar panel on the dash to counter self discharge. They are always full even in winter. Mine is just stuffed behind the dash in a taped up box of coroplast. I have saved hundreds of $ in batteries not bought.

    I was looking to replace my electrics cars 12v system with some ultracapasitors... until I crunched the numbers. A typical car has a battery has 50ah of energy, 6 x 2.7v 3000f capacitors are about 1.3ah. You would need 228 capacitors at $60 each = $13,680 or 114kg of super capacitors to replace a typical lead acid.

  • @curtisscott9251
    @curtisscott9251 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Fantastic to see you're still at it. Very pragmatic approach you have. Capacitors offer several advantages over batteries. One of which is that you can completely discharge a capacitor bank without hurting it. You CANNOT do that to a battery without badness following! This means that Capacitors have substantially higher usable energy than often given credit for. With the proper engineering - this advantage can be leveraged substantially. Have you done any experiments with BOOST/BUCK converters?

  • @JeffTheHokie
    @JeffTheHokie 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    What might work best could be a hybrid approach. Keep the battery, but put the boostpack between it and the starter. You could have all the storage and stability of the battery but the booster could handle the heavy lifting

      @@lasersaber I've found trying to do anything with the car off for any length of time is a great way to kill a battery. I left a light on overnight by accident once and that seems like the safest upper limit.

    • @InfinionExperiments
      @InfinionExperiments ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Consider a hybrid setup with a small battery in parallel with supercaps. You should be able to size your system accordingly for the right amount of reserve.
      I ended up doing a ~30 Wh setup with a 6S2P supercap config (1000F 16.8V rated). I can run the radio with sub for a decent amount of time. Can start the car with as little as 7V with a warm engine which is neat.
      What would really make supercaps practical in starter applications is a high powered bi-directional dc-dc converter to boost the voltage to just above usable levels. That would unlock another 40% of the usable energy in a supercap and exploit its unique advantage over batteries to discharge down to low voltages while still providing significant power.

    Wow, it’s encouraging to hear about your shop. Our farm is just getting up to speed these days, and I am dearly looking forward to unpacking two cargo containers of tools and supplies…and finally getting a shop underway for the first time in nearly a decade.
    My Maxwell 6x 2600F boost pack has been serving us well for around 10 years now. Although I’ve been considering making a 2nd pack…the Maxwell caps are still over $50/each these days. However, have you considered other ultra caps now on the market, such as the 2.7V 3000F units? Do you have any thoughts on building a boost pack with those?

    But how long does the charge hold in these? How does the system know not to overcharge them? What are the risks of them in a car crash? so many variables to consider.
    Is it legal per state or federal regulations to be using these in place of what was meant to be used too.

    • @AtlasReburdened
      @AtlasReburdened ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The charge holds much better than any conventional battery. The charging system simply regulates voltage, so it doesnt matter what the energy storage device is as long as it can handle that voltage.
      The specific dangers it poses in a car crash are probably smaller than that of a lead acid battery, because those have a much higher energy density and will apply voltage much longer in the event that a crash causes a short circuit.
      As far as I know there's no regulation directly addressing what type of energy storage you have to use.

    I’m building an RV and I’m curious about replacing all of the batteries with lithium, the super capacitor would allow me to install some equipment and batteries where the original battery were if I can fit them. I think I wouldn’t need nearly as large of capacitors if I have a 350A peak discharge already on the lithiums.
