But I agree its stupid to go skinny dipping in some random lake in the woods thinking that no one is around just after they had used fireworks to announce their presence.

If your map is still not working and do not know if you are going the right way you can try and use your compass or if the characters keep talking. Oh and I am also wondering, what would happen if you did not take the girls booze

I think they put the fence up to keep out tresspassers from ruining the resting place of whoever, maybe it was a friend of the developer or maybe it has something to do with the story.

what's happening drae is that the map updates as you move, so when it's black it's basically an unexplored area until you move around
