Numerical order still beats boring old release order, if you ask me, since you'll at least get the full flow of the whole saga (and especially if you already know the big twists). Personally, I advocate for one of 3 'alternating orders' of either I-IV-II-V-III-VI, I-II-IV-V-III-VI, or IV-I-II-V-III-VI. This way, one remains genuinely invested in both trilogies without already knowing the general outcome of either one, AND all the big twists remain intact (they're just given different contexts). Of course, to go with one of these, you've got to pretty much have a high Midichlorian count from the outset. I'm not convinced Jen does. : /

It made for a refreshing change to all these release/numerical order channels, which have frankly gotten rather boring and predictable for many us as viewers of these YT videos. : /

People should just call this "the first movie" and not Episode IV. That always confuses newcomers and makes it seem more daunting that it's going to be.
Another reason to watch the original theatrical cut: no episode number. Of course, then you get the "Did they just skip three sequels?" question when watching Empire, but I think that's less jarring than a number IV on the first movie.
I grew up as the Prequels were coming out and after 3 ended I thought "man, i wonder if they'll make a 4th" and looked it up and found old 70s pictures of Luke and his X-Wing and thought "is this some sort of foreign bootleg?" As I was looking through the pictures I realized "wait, I've been seeing Darth Vader my entire life. Of course he had to appear somewhere." And maybe a short time later I picked up the Original Trilogy VHS set from a pawn shop. But it was confusing as an 11 year old with limited knowledge lmao.
Obi wan has been with luke since he was a baby, but as luke got older obi wan seen him less, uncle owen didnt like obi wan, he didnt want luke seing "that old wizerd".
Thanks to all of the retcons in the films that follow the original, Ben Kenobi proves to be a compulsive liar. There's obviously the "point of view" nonsense regarding Vader, but it even goes down to the minor details. You know, you can't really claim that you haven't gone by the name of Obi-Wan since before Luke was born if you were called Obi-Wan mere minutes before the kid's birth; that's an absurd and misleading technicality. (Of course, it's really the fault of Mr. Lucas, who clearly didn't feel beholden to stick to his own pre-established details two decades later.)

Hey, were only mean to those that should know better. We're very kind and helpful to new people and want them to have the best first experience possible. It's for that reason anyone that would introduce the SW saga in chronological order to a first time viewer should get beaten with a rubber hose. I think the Machete Order, 4,5,1,2,3,6, is best for a first time viewer.
Holden should really stop over explaining things like "There's this trilogy and a trilogy before this and a trilogy after this ...". None of that is relevant information and it's needlessly confusing for newcomers, just let her watch the movie. Why is it episode 4? Because Lucas wanted to recreate the feeling of walking into the middle of the story which was common with old serials, that's all that needs to be said. And yes, I know Lucas didn't come up with the numbering until ESB and the original movie became episode 4 (and ANH) retroactively but the point still stands, the text crawl is what those serials did to catch viewers up.
The great thing is that the original Star Wars film didn't get the number added until after ESB's first theatrical run (except in one of the behind-the-scenes books of the era), so everyone walked into the sequel and said, "Wait: did we miss three movies? Were we supposed to count that stupid Holiday Special?"

@@megalord2598 The problem is that it doesn't stand in isolation. The prequels are full of these "small things," and at some point, they add up to poor continuity.

Hey, were only mean to those that should know better. We're very kind and helpful to new people and want them to have the best first experience possible. It's for that reason anyone that would introduce the SW saga in chronological order to a first time viewer should get beaten with a rubber hose. I think the Machete Order, 4,5,1,2,3,6, is best for a first time viewer.
I don't think she's sold on it, however if there were a standalone movie focused on R2-D2 she'd be all in

Holden should really stop over explaining things like "There's this trilogy and a trilogy before this and a trilogy after this ...". None of that is relevant information and it's needlessly confusing for newcomers, just let her watch the movie. Why is it episode 4? Because Lucas wanted to recreate the feeling of walking into the middle of the story which was common with old serials, that's all that needs to be said. And yes, I know Lucas didn't come up with the numbering until ESB and the original movie became episode 4 (and ANH) retroactively but the point still stands, the text crawl is what those serials did to catch viewers up.
The great thing is that the original Star Wars film didn't get the number added until after ESB's first theatrical run (except in one of the behind-the-scenes books of the era), so everyone walked into the sequel and said, "Wait: did we miss three movies? Were we supposed to count that stupid Holiday Special?"
