I was experimenting to see if I could keep the top moss from drying out as quickly. In large vessels like this vase, I find that the top layer of moss dries much faster than the rest of the moss below. This causes some of the top roots to dry out and get water stressed, which can then affect the foliage and growth rate. I’m always experimenting with different medium types and different layering methods to see what works best in my environment! :)
