  • When given the opportunity to test and review the Arcimoto FUV for a couple of weeks, I wasn't going to say "no." However, I had no idea how significantly it would affect my life and change how I view transportation. In addition to being the most fun vehicle I've ever driven, it may also be one of the most important as well.

    0:30 - FUV Basics
    1:49 - What does it feel like to drive?
    3:51 - Is it practical?
    4:46 - The verdict

    I liked your video. I live in Florida and have had my FUV for six months. Over all I love it, but like any relationship one can list problems. So, I will say some of the things that are or were problems, but please remember they are part of a loving relationship.
    The first problem is storage, none, not even a clove compartment. The aft storage compartment is an expensive addon. The backend rack carrying capacity is rated at only 30 pounds. I am an experienced motorcyclist. The handling of the FUV is OK, but at moderate speed it can wobble if you do not pay attention. With two front wheels pulling the torque is impressive.
    I was worried about dealer warranty service. My FUV is an early model and later models have added some upgrades. So, in Florida Arcimoto has a (as in one) mobile service van. The technician stopped by and upgraded my software and made some adjustments. I was impressed by how fast and professional this service was. Gee, you get to drive around Florida, in a van full of tools and fix Arcimotos. Now there is a job.

    • @EVResource
      @EVResource  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment Chris! As a former Floridian, I’m appreciative of your opinion.
      I wish I would have known about the weight capacity for the rear when I tested the cargo compartment. I definitely over filled it!
      I think service and repair will get better the more the company grows. I certainly don’t expect them to be on par with other manufacturers in this way.
      I’d love to hear about your ownership experience going forward! Feel free to email me about anything: hello@ev-resource.com

      There is one more item I would like to add. This involves the three tires. It is my understanding that the tire and rim are a single unit. That is if you wish to replace or patch the tire this cannot be done, you have to replace the entire unit. You have to special order each tire type. I am not sure of the price or the turn around time. The good news is that the FUV is a light vehicle and your mileage most likely be low, thus a set of tires could last a lone time.

    • @thewheelieguy
      @thewheelieguy ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@chrisconklin2981 those tires are the same kind of thing as motorcycle tires, so the tire is a special order I'm sure, but a tire shop or moto dealer ought to do those with no trouble.

    • @chrisconklin2981
      @chrisconklin2981 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thewheelieguy I am not so sure. I looked at a few TH-cam videos and they show the usual tire changing method - take tire off rim etc. If I remember correctly, I was told that the FUV's tire and rim are a unit that cannot be separated and that you have to buy the tire and rim as a unit. I hope that I am wrong.

    • @Strideo1
      @Strideo1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@chrisconklin2981 I've never heard of tires that can't be removed from the rim except on specialized equipment. I see no reason why these vehicles wouldn't use some sort of typical motorsports tire and rim like a motorcycle or trike use.

    I live in New Zealand. I believe we have a few of these running around our biggest (1.7m people) city, Auckland - and the Arcimoto is legal to drive here. I'm looking forward to getting down there to rent/drive one! Wouldn't it be great if Arcimoto also joined forces with Lithuanian company AKO-trike? They have developed an electric tilt-trike, with a claimed top speed of 140mph and 300+miles range with DC fast-charging. Arcimoto bought out Tilting Motor Works (from whose technologies the MLM Lean Machine Machine has been developed). Imagine if the best of all 3 were combined? They could conceivably conquer the electric 3-wheel markets for e-pedal, intra-city AND interstate e-trike commuting!!

    I rented an Arcimoto FUV for a few hours. Here are some things you forgot to mention:
    Cons:
    1. Steering. Very very heavy at low speeds. I have owned a motorcycle in the past and would prefer a steering wheel w/ rack and pinion setup for more leverage and better control for emergency maneuvers.
    2. Expensive. For $20K, I think I'd rather pickup a used Nissan Leaf.
    3. Sunburn. I wore a cap, but no sunscreen. Mistake.
    4. Braking. There are 2 braking methods: regen (right-hand) and hydraulic (rear-foot to rear wheel). Regen braking is strong and progressive. Foot brake is very very weak. I would prefer an integrated single braking system.
    5. Transmission. Makes clunks when getting off of regen braking and accelerating. Disconcerting.
    6. No doors. "doors" are an option. I prefer them for their placebo effect.
    7. Range. Mfg recommends battery charge between 10-90%. This means its effective range is 80 mi (city) and 40 mi (highway). I used the battery from 90 to 40 % in a few hours and went about 50 mi. in mixed city/highway.
    8. Nitpicks. Seat height is not adjustable. Front legroom is slightly cramped for my 5'8" frame. Rear passenger has no hand holds -- must hold part of frame. Mirrors should be 20-50% larger and positioned higher. Ride is firm but not harsh. I would prefer a softer ride with more suspension travel.
    Pros:
    1. Stable. Even at highway speeds.
    2. Relatively quiet. The aerodynamics are quite good and wind noise is not objectionable.
    3. Vehicle is wide (stable). It feels like it's as wide as a Mini Cooper.
    Conclusion.
    I would consider this vehicle if it cost $10K. For $20K, I'd rather buy 2 brand-new motorcycles. I consider this a niche vehicle.

    • @EVResource

      Hey Rich! Here on VA a motorcycle license IS still required. Level 2 stations are located ALL OVER! To help locate these chargers, I suggest using apps like Chargeway and PlugShare. I’ve found those to be helpful.
      Many of the charging stations at gas stations like Wawa and Sheetz are DC Fast chargers and not currently compatible with the Arcimoto platform.

    I appreciate your demonstration. You say you are concerned about all the pollution and toxins in the driving space. Yet you drive a fully open on both sides motorcycle. Interesting. It would be good if Arcimoto formulated panels or something to protect us from the whipping rain we sometimes get in tropical climates. I think the Solo in Mesa, AZ should consider this design for 2 passengers. We do have too many deadly accidents with motorcycles and other vehicles. If we could slooooowwww people down, life might be longer for thousands of people. Keep up the great reviews.

    • @popeyegordon
      @popeyegordon 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Heavy vehicles with climate control are a self fufilling prophesy of pollution. I stay bone dry in a heavy rain with my Arcimoto. The wind pressure shoves all the rain away from me. Doors would just be useless dead weight. Only when you are standing still could the rain come from a direction that might get you damp before you start driving again. The roof with rain gutters is part of the protection that no motorcycle offers.

      Having a passenger doesn’t really affect things in a significant way. You can absolutely charge on a standard 110volt plug, charging would take approximately 8hrs if you needed a full charge in this way. If you needed a faster charge, 240v would cut that time in half.

      The Arcimoto FUV is classified as an autocycle or motorcycle depending on the state. Also, helmet laws and motorcycle license laws vary state to state too.
      If you treated this as if it were a motorcycle, and bundled up when riding in colder weather, it would be ok. Having an enclosed vehicle in the cold areas is a good idea in addition to the FUV. I did drive it in 30 degree weather and was ok. It’ll depend on each person and their tolerance I suppose.

    As a motorcyclist I like the idea but it’s too big. I would prefer something the size of the Adiva AD3. Is parking a problem for this? The nice thing about scooters/motorcycles is the free parking. I like the lack of doors. Scooter riders use a lap cover that snaps onto the bike when it’s cold out. Motorcyclists wear protective over gear. I agree the price is too steep to sell enough to make an impact. Unless the government will subsidise.

      Pricing is expected to come down when they reach max production rate in 2025… but with the way inflation is these days, who knows. I hope that it does though. It would be great to see sub-$15k for these.

I'm not counting how much exhaust we've not put out into the air. Because 4 of us use the FUV (she is a bit of a village bicycle), ours is pretty well utilized for short drives.

    Great goal but doomed for failure. Here is why. Many states require a motorcycle endorsement for 3 wheels. Mine included. I think its stupid but unless these laws can be removed, people are not going to want to go through the hassle of getting a motorcycle endorsement. I would be driving a spyder right now if I didn't need an endorsement. So unless laws get changed to allow 3wheel riding with normal license, it will never be normal on the streets. Now my personal issue is the 100 mile range. After owning a nissan leaf for 3 years, I can honestly say, all electric vehicles should have at least 250 mile range. The infrastructure for charging is years, possible decades away from being convenient for all. That 100 mile rane wouldn't be so bad if there was always a charging station within reach and charging taking no longer that 10 minutes tops. This is coming from a current EV owner. Love my bolt, but I can't just take it anywhere like I would want to in a regular car. The charging infrastructure isn't there for it yet.

    • @EVResource
      @EVResource  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Luckily many states are changing their laws so that you don’t have to have a motorcycle endorsement or license to drive a three wheeler. I believe Alabama and Maryland are the most recent. My state of VA is one that hasn’t made the changes yet, so I understand.
      The 100 mi range and lack of fast charging are two things I would change about e Arcimoto, but that’s only because what I want (and you as well it would seem) is something other than what the FUV was designed for.
      My 82 mi range Spark EV has been plenty (because of DCFC capability), so I think if the FUV could fast chargers it would be great.
      Thanks for your comment!

      @xDoomsdayx 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EVResource I might disagree with that last statement. How many motorcycle people do you know that is thrilled to ride from their house, to work and back? Well all of them, but how many of them are satisified with that short of a ride? Very few. What is fun about only 100 mile range? Absolutely nothing and I can only guess that 100 mile range is if you baby it all the time. You know whats fun? Leaving everyone behind as you pull out of the stop light. This greatly reduces your range. In fact, I bet my 80 mile range leaf was probably getting about 40-50 miles because I like quick starts and you get a lot of chances at it in cities. I do not believe any electric vehicle made today should have such low milage. Its very impracticle. If I want to go to my fathers place that's 2 hours away. Can't do it in an 80 or 100 mile range vehicle. There are no level 3 chargers between me and him. The FUV would be perfect for a trip like that IF it had the range. I can go to my fathers in my bolt and come back and still have 60 mile range and that's not babbying it at all. That's 70-75mph most of the way.
      I'm sorry, I just don't see the Arcimoto as a tuktuk. I mean that seems to me, that is what is being thought of here (more or less). Its a fun utility vehicle with a very poor range. Sure I guess it might have some limited uses but isn't it just a more expensive tuktuk at that point?
      There are things currently that I can't even do in my bolt. If I wanted to drive to my home town, its 4 hours away. There is 1 lvl 3 charger along the entire route. Its a huge elevation change from here to there so 1 lvl 3 charger is not enough. This is part of the bad infrastructure that we are sorely lacking and unfortunately the automotive industry is in no hurry to try and push that out quickly. Heck most car manufactors that sell pure ev's don't even want to sell them. So I have to say, infrastructure is still decades away.

Let's be real, at such an expensive price it will never achieve mass adoption and remain a very niche product ideally suited and limited to operating within city and town limits as a recreation vehicle such as for tourists in an area like Key West, Florida. It's an admirable idea but the masses don't want or need what is essentially a gloried golf chart on steroids for mass transit within cities. There are many E bikes on the market that present a vastly cheaper and in many cases better alternative for many than this does.
