Hi Steve: Great videos. I'm from the islands. Loads of rocks. Not to be taken lightly. St. Helen's Pool on east side of Tresco is generally pretty good; best approached from the south. Pelistry bay on east end of St. Marys is good protection from SW, NW and W.
Thanks so much for this Steve. I'm planning my first trip to Scilly from Falmouth shortly. My longest trip so far has been Falmouth to Fowey so I'm slightly nervous and your video is so helpful; gives a great picture of navigating the islands.
Bryher Island is the best as a sea kayaking base. Been there and absolutely loved every day on the water. We have had so much fun on the swell. "no real safe all round anchorage", I somewhat disagree. It is just dynamic, you have to adjust your position to the weather. There is always a safe place there. Just opposite the Fraggle Rock pub, there is a nice tiny lagoon/bay. Water seeps there quite slowly: good place to beach the boat.
Know what you mean about the lack of anchoring space there. I was safe there in a F9 NE gale once. Easier to come in there from the south across the sandbar once the tide rises than the long way round. It looks bad on the chart but enough water for most yachts, around 3m nearer HW. Scilly's a nice place but no real safe all round anchorage, not relaxing but for many maybe that's part of the fun.
