Rarely has there been such an enthusiastic display of international unity as that which greeted the invasion of Afghanistan in 2001. Compared to Iraq, Afghanistan became the 'good war.' But today, with the collapse of the puppet regime in Kabul, what does the future hold for a traumatised Afghan people? Legendary activist Tariq Ali provides his answer to this burning question.

Tariq Ali is a famed political activist, writer, journalist, historian, filmmaker, and public intellectual. His latest book 'The Forty-Year War in Afghanistan: A Chronicle Foretold' explores the history and present of the war in Afghanistan.

As I recall U.S. trained Taliban with Univ. of Nebraska personnel in Pakistan after Z-biggy set up the sting. 'back in the Navy then they wanted to say USSR was moving into Afghanistan to get an Indian Ocean port next, and U.S. Navy wanted a 700 ship fleet, after CNO Zumwalt retired (with his Russian wife). Next though George HW Bush with all his inside CIA connections got Carter out of office with the Iran Crisis and became the Gippers VP in a quick 20 min. discussion behind close doors in Detroit in 1980. Zbignew Bzrzynski's Tri-Lateral plans to become president went down the drain and Afghanistan became the new Viet Nam. Afghanistan even supplied heroin for CIA black ops like South-East Asia did. More of those anti-communist hang out wars for the Gipper' like Lebanon, Granada, Nicuragua (Iran-Contra), or ole DPRK or Libya na-na-na-na boo-boo operations! Where would Hollywood been without Tom Spanks, and Rambo in Afghanistan in the 80's?

      "?true history"? Only partly!
      1. "Taliban" is a propaganda term.
      2. In his introduction, Tariq did non mention anything about the Britsih Empire or before it?
      3. I am interested in more factual HISTORY as nearly half of it is often proven not factual.

AQ stated aim after afghan war was destruction of the US, the idea promulgated by Iran exactly during Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. AQ and Taliban may be different in their objectives but Taliban ideas are incompatible with anyone. The US bungled in Afg for many reasons but much of the problems lay with Taliban themselves which is coming home to roost in Pakistan.

And trafficked by the state-within-a-state that orchestrated 9/11 and the JFK/BK/MLK/MX assassinations. After all, if you're going to have your own private army, intelligence organisation and a global media propaganda system at your command to effect regime change both at home and abroad Donald Rumsfeld and pals need vast amounts of money, as much or more so than the official state can provide, to finance it.

I grew up in the late fifties and early sixties in a working class multi-ethnic neighborhood of European immigrants. It was called "the Melting Pot" back then. But the pot had a lot of cracks in the pot. The Poles had a deep animus against the Soviet Union. You could say it bordered on ethnic hatred. So I'm not surprised Brzezinski also reflected in his prejudices why he wanted to give some payback to the Russians. But unfortunately revenge is a grave you dig for yourself as Americans learned on 9/11. But I wasn't surprised. I served as a medical corpsman in Vietnam. I knew how we always treat innocent civilians caught in the crossfire. Americans have this messianic nationalism they call exceptionalism. It's the faith of fanatics. Of course, only our enemies are the fanatics. And I wasn't surprised after twenty years we just walked away from Afghanistan with a shambolic withdrawal that hearkens back to the fall of Saigon in April, 1975. America has been a bull in china store since it entered the era of forever wars. It lost its moral compass long ago. It's due for a comeuppance with its proxy war against Russia in Ukraine. Another foreign policy debacle.

Firstly let me level with Tariq Ali. I am roughly the same age and I first encountered him in the 1960's on newsreels heading up various demonstrations in London. My politics are polar opposite to Mr. Ali's. However, he has presented a most concise chain of events as regards the problems in Afghanistan. There is one continuing question that I have never been able to address. Bearing in mind the 'Afghanistan Question' was there in Victorian times when the British Army had several expeditions into the country. My question is what is the strategic importance of the country, it has no access to the Indian Ocean and it has lived and continues to live in the seventh century.

I believe Mr Tariq Ali either intentionally misrepresented the whole scenario from 1989 onwards or that he is not aware of the reality on the ground. He systematically bypassed several distasteful facts about the T-aliban and the involvement of big foreign players in support of T-liban. by the way it’s such miss reporting and statements by high profile individuals that general public no longer trusts 21st century journalism! Tariq is just repeating what the media has been peddling, but he is not informed of the real reason why the Soviets were in Afghanistan. I KNOW WHY because I was in Moscow in 1964 and 1965 and friends of the Talibaan (Afghani Students) and their dream of developing and modernizing their homeland that the British had kept backward with Soviet direct help on the ground. And this both the UK and the US could not accept and therefore set up rebellious fanatical and poorly educated religious groups to fight the Communists in the name of Islam by creating the famous JIHADI and AL-QAEDA gangs led by their own agent Tim Osman (Usama bin Ladin) and other Saudi fanatics. They destroyed Libya because Muammar al Ghaddafi was leading Africa to develop and modernize without Western help!
To hear Tariq repeat the media garbage that the Brzezinski NATO-CIA run Al-Qaeda admitted having carried out 9/11 is disgusting! Tariq cannot be that ignorant not to know that it was a US-ISRAEL false flag operation to start the WAR OF TERROR they called WAR ON TERROR on the entire world, but mainly on the Muslim world that represented their main obstacles.
