  • Matt and Navah are passionate advocates for families living with autism. In their blended family of six, three of their children are on the spectrum.
No one knows how they cope. However nothing gets in the way of this irrepressible family - including the challenge of finding a new home.

I would totally love a full-fledged reality show from them or just people like them. I'm sick of the fake drama reality shows.

Libby unfortunately it would turn out to be terrible as those shows force drama and stuff. I think it would also be very frustrating for the family and children.

Poor old sister I know how she feels. Being trapped and given so much responsibility really steals your youth. I am in the same situation and I get frustrated and stressed out. I can tell she wants out.

I’ve worked as a paraprofessional for two pre-kindergarten children who had autism and oh my goodness, they were the sweetest kids I ever did work with! It was my first time working with an autistic child and I give a thumbs up to the children’s parents and what they have to go through daily! I was diagnosed with ADHD and Insomnia and I have Turner’s Syndrome, so I understand a little bit what’s going on with these kids. They are unique and special! They are inspiring and absolutely incredible! I received a smile from them everyday when I came into the classroom and that made me smile. They may have forgotten the lesson that day, but the when I hear the parents say that their autistic child said that they miss me each time I go to work at my other job, makes me happy to know that somewhere in their mind, they are getting their social skills because I’m their best friend.

You are important in this world, never give up and you are accepted! I know what it’s like to have depiression. I’ve been diagnosed with deep depression and anxiety. I also have ADHD and insomnia, but I live with a smile on my face. I don’t know the full amount to autism, but I worked with two pre-kindergarten children who do have autism, I learned everyday. Keep smiling everyday. :)

I appreciate the dad saying he "mourns the dreams he had for his children" I think I hear to many people with autistic children say they feel like they lost their real child when they started showing signs of specrum disorder. But you didn't lose your child, all you lost was the idea of your child, your child has always been this and its alright to feel a sense of loss after expecting something, but putting that on the child is abusive. You need to get over the expectations you had for a neurotypical child and embrace the child you actually have.

If they're feeding their kids this way then they haven't researched autism enough, diet is huge and causes most of the symptoms for a lot of people on the spectrum.
Gives you better control of the movement of your body, you can articulate things easier and have less anxiety/irritability, better emotional control. So many things.
Such an obvious thing to me, yet for a lot of adults it doesn't even compute.

I remember watching a documentary on her family! What a small world. Seems like they are doing a great job! I don’t have a personal connection to autism, aside from a few family friends on the spectrum, but my impression of this organization is that it’s a great support system for the parents, and if they don’t have support, the kids will not be successful, so good on you guy for all the work you do!

It’s very encouraging to see documentaries about the truth of autism spectrum disorder. When I was growing up it was must less talked about and accepted. My brother, who is now 24 grew up with mild autism but UNDIAGNOSED. This was very hard to witness because he really struggled socially and with his identity growing up. He is just now coming to realization of this and coming to terms with it. It’s a major relief.

my mum is soo helpful to the point of she will do stuff like take me to the council if i have any issues with council tax has helped me fill out many forms for things like benefits has explained so many differant things to me over the years, i really enjoyed this episode as the more people that watch the more people that will understand that autism is a spectrum and it is something you cant control and that you may need help and support for, especially as a child or as a parent i really wish there was things like the autism walks set up in england in my area and i wish there was more services to help people like me who are trying to live independantly as an autistic parent that may also have an autistic child but as girls its harder to get a diagnosis so very often no matter when you go to try get a diagnosis you wont get it for years and then you dont get the help that you need im now about 3 years on from diagnosis and still not getting the help i need from professionals

I relate with Wolf so much, they won't diagnose me but even other people have said I show signs of high-functioning autism (how I found out in the first place was one of my moms friends asking if I was ever tested, she refused to ever even let me see anyone about it growing up.) And this just furthered that want to actually be accepted as I am.

I have two Aspergers boys one is now 26 and the other is 20. Thank god that I was an avacate for my older son. The school wanted to put him in a program just for his social behavior when he was just 8 years old. I said NO because he was a very bright child with some anger issues. With extra help from social behavior programs and growing up with extra love and help he is now working full time and has friends. My younger son had more help in school because of programs from autism speaks. He also is working part time and is doing well at his job. They are very polite and honest young adults. It is also how you raise your children with love and respect that will help them be that best they can be!

Attitude right now in texas there are isnt alot of help for Autisum with Medicaid. any advice on which states or where i need to look to get him what he needs. it is a journey and having a special needs child you lose alot as well as make sacrifies for them. he is on a list for ABA and respite care. But yes you do have to be the right parent to have the patience and humor through it all.

I have 4 autistic children. My oldest is 27 now, we lived in Orange County until she was 13 and have to admit the Orange County regional center was full of crap. The school district was ridiculous, at times without my knowledge they decided to put my daughter in a regular classroom, teachers thought it was my idea but it wasn't. Hope after all these years California has made improvements for special needs children and adults.
I want to say the best decision we made was when we moved to Texas and found the best programs there.
Now we live in Colorado with our younger autistic kids (6-10 yo), we have found great programs here too.

I have only one child and he has autism. It has been such a long and difficult journey as a single mom without much support aside from what I could ever get from local sources. I hate it when people downplay my situation or try to suggest I should be feeling happy and blessed. That's not what I want to hear because ASD sucks and it's a struggle every single day. It used to make me so mad watching all my friends from a distance living their normal lives with their children growing up and going through all their miles stones while I'm stuck in here listenning to the same tales from my 28 yr old son day in and day out. It has taken a huge toll in all aspects of my life including my financial and mental heath. I have been through hell and back more than once. Having said all that, you might think I'm ungrateful, bitter and a pesimistic. But I must say that after many tantrums and selt reflection, my journey has now taken me into a new much brighter direction. I can see now how I have been blessed, how having him has re-shaped my character and how he has changed me for the better. I'm thinking that by having him I was probably saved from a much worse situation. He probably didn't get the mother he deserved but I def got all the life lessons I needed. My son is a very happy youngman and that makes me super happy. He's funny, smart, kind, easy going, helpful, obedient, he has manytalents, and he can do many things by himself. He had his first piano recital a couple of weeks ago. Yes, autism still sucks. But he is without any doubt my pride and joy!

Honestly, I never have really been bothered by "different kids or special needs kids". I help out with them all the time at school and my teachers let me be sorta a para ed to them. They are my bffs, family and one of them is my boyfriend. Ive been bullied all my life so I don't feel like different is bad, rather it's a good thing. I also have an anxiety disorder, so I can relate to some feelings they have. I am happy to see others like me are rooting for these people and see all the good in all of them❤

My brothers have it, but if you didn't know them personally you would never know it. When you get to know them though it is very easy to see. Just because it doesn't look like they have autism that doesn't mean they don't have it.

  • @technerdchic
    @technerdchic 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I grew up in a family of 6 - mom, dad, and 3 siblings.
My father and all 3 of my younger siblings ALL have Asperger's.
My mom and I are the only neurotypical in our family.
Needless to say, learning how to interact in a neurotypical world vs. how to act when with my aspie family was challenging growing up, to say the least.
Back then, (70's & 80's), my family were all misdiagnosed as simply having ADHD.
So it was confusing because there was definitely something 'more' different about them than just ADHD.
I knew other kids with ADHD and they didn't behave at all the same.
    I just called it 'weird'.
I was frequently embarrassed to the point of it almost being traumatic for me as a very sensitive kid trying to fit in with my peers.
Another thing about Asperger's is it limits the depth of relationship potential... I would see how my friend could talk to, and bond, with her sister about serious age-appropriate things.
And I hated and kinda even resented the fact that I couldn't do that with my sister... As a result, I didn't feel close to her.
What's worse, was I didn't understand Why there was a major disconnect between my family and I, so because my mind had to resolve this issue somehow to make any sense, I concluded that the only reasonable explaination that made any sense was that it must be my fault.
I must not be a very loving or good person - otherwise, why wouldn't I be able to connect or bond with anyone in my family?... And that belief proved to be absolutely crippling to my life and future.
I'm 43 yrs old now, and my life is in turmoil.
My relationships are all with emotionally unavailable men and never work out.
    I am unemployed and floundering.
My only goals right now are just to somehow survive another day.
My siblings are all struggling as well just to survive.
My sister went homeless last year (2nd time homeless for her) and so now is currently staying with my boyfriend and I... Although, my boyfriend and I are anything but stable these days so we may both be on the streets together soon if he throws me out.
My brother is divorced and convinced God speaks to him, and my other brother just got out of prison for stealing electricity from the local power company.
Every one of us is only surviving.
And the fear and guilt I feel now for not being able to help them or for not being more responsible in my own life enough to be more prepared to help then is incredibly overwhelming.
But on the other hand, to start out with the belief that I was not a good person didn't really afford me much of a chance for success either.
    It's just really hard.
BUT, there is a very cool thing about having aspie siblings!!
No matter how old you get, you can totally act and feel just like a goofy playful kid again when you're hanging out together!
It can be really theraputic to leave all the seriousness of the adult neurotypical world behind and get in touch with your childlike, more simplistic and somewhat goofy mind again.
Since I have learned more about asperger's and know that there is an actual name for the thing I always thought was just weird about my siblings, it's made my relationships with them a little better.
Instead of trying to teach them how to be normal like I had been trying to do all my life with utter frustration, I now realize and accept that this is not something that can be taught out of them.
I've developed more patience for their abnormal behavior or sudden, seemingly, out if the blue inappropriate conversation killing topics... And slowly but surely, I have been reconnecting with my sister since she's been living with me.
So I'm grateful for all of the information as it's helping me reconnect with my sister in a new way or a more understanding way, on my part at least.
I realize I will probably never have the deep bond with her I would like... But understanding this condition makes it easier to accept and simply appreciate the bond that I CAN have with her.
So yes, learning about this has made a significant improvement in my relationship with her.
Me and my sister actually made a video not too long ago acting goofy like I described earlier.
Search for "Judd Girls Gone unmedicated" lol, we're acting crazy, but it was so much fun to make with her!
Acting like goofy kids is so much fun... And around an aspie there is NEVER a sense of fear from being judged... They simply DON'T judge people.
Very comfortable to be around even for people with social anxiety issues.
You never feel like your being judged and can act as crazy, goofy or strange as you want.
    They won't judge you, ever.
    Another great thing about them!
Thanks again for raising awareness about not only this condition, but about the siblings it also has a very dramatic impact on!
It's very important to realize the impact on all involved, including siblings - not just those with Asperger's and their parents.
It's the siblings that can actually tell u more about the person with Asperger's than anyone else... We are the ones that spend the most time with them.
We know this condition better than anyone else!
    Believe me!
