I am close to 80, never quit loving great stories on film since a small boy...THIS, I hope one many awards, it deserved Oscars for picture and Barry Peppers and Annabella Piutackett, the 2 main co-stars. The most beautiful (and bittersweet) film I ever saw in my life...much based on the various Eskimo, Inuit tribal peoples, etc. I watch this often, buy and give DVD's out...it has everything a great film needs...and broke my old heart at the end. It looks like Hollywood has not used Annabella since then, she is a princess with great love, courage, humble and full of joy, even in suffering. WATCH IT?
This is a stunningly beautiful movie. While you are watching it, remember that Annabella Piugattuk was not a professional actor, but hired for her language and genuine outdoor skills. That makes it all the more amazing
Barry Pepper walking in the snow...Barry Pepper rules the freakin' snow. Barry Pepper OWNS the freakin' snow. Look up snow in the dictionary and it says Barry Freakin' Pepper...
Anyway, this movie fucked me up.I was misty eyed totally fell in love with the little capable self reliant inut girl She was so peaceful,Kind, sweet and yet so self reliant yeah, an amazing piece of art.It really communicated to me
I don't know if you've seen the movie since this comment, but I'll answer anyway. The movie takes place in 1953. There were still remote communities of Inuit that had very little contact with White Canadians. They still dressed traditionally, hunted and ate traditionally, and spoke Inuktituk as their primary and sometimes only language. So, it is actually, quite accurate.
