    A stunningly beautiful, inspiring, and powerful film. Sooooo underrated and underappreciated. Affected my life deeply since I first saw it at the age of 17 when it came out, and continues to do so today, 30+ years later.

      I was 23 when this came out. None of my gf's would go. 1st movie I went to alone. Cannot express what it brought out within me but I left that theater knowing I was going to have a wolf. One wk later I found my first wolf hybrid 80%, Akla. Yana, his mate followed a yr later. Had 4 litters. 37Yrs later, numerous hybrids and wolves, training and rescue. All due to this movie. I have one pr now, Esuqtak Atka and Quillaq. Wolves have become a part of me. 2mo. later,, June 26th 2020 4days ago my pr have had a litter of five gorgeous babies!!💜💜💜😂

    There is something magical about this movie. The sense of space, of loneliness, of life in the raw. Rarely have I been so enthralled by a movie so as to feel I was walking in the steps of the main character. And the wolves...oh lord, such magnificent animals, in their element. And we so much out of ours. One of my top 10 movies ever.

    • @NormAppleton
      @NormAppleton 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Then you OOTEK the savior. Tyler dies without Ootek to save him, to teach him.
      Oddly enough this was shot up around Atlin, BC, the THING was shot there a few years earlier.

    • @Pigeonmaster-zt5ly
      @Pigeonmaster-zt5ly ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes there is...The end is such a trip. It's like the life lesson you never wanted but it's broken to you easy. Sort of. It's probably why I don't like killing animals today. I would kill to eat or protect myself but never for money. I've seen wolves, coyote's, and foxes in the wild and I would never hurt one. I even saw a fox with her baby in the middle of the night on an abandoned trail 15 odd years ago and it's like this movie. The vibe changes.

    My favorite thing about this film is the tone. This is a lonely, solitary, melancholy, yet funny film. It's simple feel is the perfect setting for it's complex ideas.
    A film like this today would be far more cut and dry with it's message of modern society is wrong, primitive cultures are right, and nature is pure and perfect. This film is so much more. Without preaching, or shouting in your face, it portrays the complexities of modern humans trying to understand and nurture nature, and that there are no simple answers. Tyler's struggle to understand is as complex and difficult as the wolves' struggle to survive.
    I need to find a copy of this and enjoy it on a quite evening.

    The First "MAN versus WILD" movie that I ever saw but it has intrigued me forever! Questions: Can i PASS the TEST? Like the Inuit , the eskimo's and indians.. of Northern Canada. I love the mix as Brian Dennehy is the half-crazy adventurer who risks his life and death every day! Facing our "mortality" every man and every woman has an "expiration date"..

      Farley Mowat wrote another excellent book entitled "Lost In The Barrens", which was also made into a movie , albeit not on the same epic scale as this fantastic Carroll Ballard film . Read it to my two sons as a bedtime story years ago ; they liked it too . My all time favorite author of Northern Wilderness literature !

    Image and sound that will never be forgotten in a lone humans eye, tranquil and disheartening all at the same time, it reminds me of a person I came across in my travels of living...mouse powell is the nomenclature, but bill is the speaker of life's stories that have meaning and resonate.

    I saw this as a kid after it came out but on laserdisc not in the theater. Wonderful film. However I would say a newer film that resembles the tone, themes, and struggle of man to understand his relationship with nature and "natives" is Terry Malick's The New World though it does have more characters and more "action", it also conveys the vastness of uncivilized regions and how small and fragile we really are in the face of it. I'll never forget watching THAT one at night in a near empty theater. The sound design alone was transformative.

    • @SteveSkafte
      @SteveSkafte  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The New World was certainly a beautiful film. Though for me, I always drift most toward the tales of near-total isolation. For me, nothing beats the beautiful loneliness of Never Cry Wolf. It's certainly had a huge influence on my own photography and short films through the years - not to mention my experience with nature in general. I keep up a list on IMDb called "Quiet, Personal Films". Perhaps you might find some you haven't seen on it to appreciate! www.imdb.com/list/ls000058732/
