  • A two day passage on the Golfe du Morbihan in Brittany - a gentle start to the the new sailing season.
    Programme:
The passage starts at Plougoumelen. After launching I sail down river to Le Bono, and then up the main Auray River to St Goustan for the night. I moor beside the old stone bridge and eat in the brasserie beside the quay. All this was against the tide, which is why you see me doing a lot of rowing, but it was very near high water, so the streams were fairly weak.
The next morning I move from my mooring alongside the quay at St Goustan to the other side of the river, before the mooring dries out, to have breakfast on one of the mooring trots there. I then sail down river to Locmariaquer, arriving just before low water. Here I have lunch and a beer, before sailing back up the river with the flood tide to Plougoumelen.
    Comments:
Listening back to this, I find I have gently anglicised the pronounciation of the place names for this video. This was unintentional - but there is some debate how Breton place names are pronounced in any case. They are generally pronounced in a French way, but this is actually incorrect. Whatever - an English person is always wrong!
Here is more about St Goustan, as you saw so little in my video: • À la découverte de Sai...

Rewatching for the nth time in a year and I'd have to say Roger is the mellowest and most endearing of You Tube hosts there are.
And mellow and sweet can be ascribed to his craft.

I don’t know if you ever have time to get back to your old videos, so, you probably won’t read this. I’m off for the weekend and truly enjoy them though, thank you sooo much. You mentioned in another video that you seem to be consumed with rope work all the time, rather than sailing (saying it tongue in cheek). I know that when I was a boy, crewing for my dad, it seemed that all I ever did was was rope work, winding, pulling, wrapping, stowing, hanging, somehow tidying up all the confound rope we had to keep the boat “ship shape”. Rarely would Daddy allow me to sail. Watching your videos is giving me the itch again. I’m looking for an Ilur. Texas

There are some people who will be hooked by sailing once they try it. I usually can tell them. You might be one.

@@MattBargain Indeed, that's true. In my experience, if you can get a newbie to be an active part of the boat instead of just being a passenger the 'hooked' ratio becomes gets close to 100%.

Plougoumelen, St Goustan and Bono - three of my favourite places! Roger makes sailing and pilotage around there, where there are strong tidal currents, lurking mud banks and rocks, look much easier and more laid-back than most of us would find it. Good film! Thanks!

Thanks for that. That was a treat. As close to one of my favourite types of sailing as it gets. I've spent many years on/off in sail-boats, and when it comes down to it, a nice seaworthy dinghy takes a heck of a lot of beating. Done most of my dinghy sailing across the Solent and going up and down the little rivers and creeks, or just coming ashore at little out of the way beaches. You simply can't do anything like as much of that in a big sailing boat with a fixed keel. Of course, one can always do the big adventure around the Island, but it often gets serious then, and one must have time to appreciate the sounds and sights of the water and life. Good move on the French flat.

Water harvesting tip. Take a cup when collecting water. If from a stainless steel basin, you'll be able to get the cup under the tap, if from a spring, you'll be able to delicately lift water from a puddle. For advanced hi-tech water harvesting take a jam on hose and/or a funnel. Old wine bladders can be a good addition to your water harvesting kit also. But mostly a hard wearing cup will get you through most physics based water harvesting conundrums. They also make a decent shovel.

A gentle easing into the season on a gorgeous river. So relaxing and tranquil. I'm always aware of the background noise in your videos. This is an interesting video from an ASMR perspective, with visceral sounds of the waves lapping against the hull, the booming baritone of the oars doing their work and the peaceful (mostly!) narration. I don't know if it's just me, and forgive me because I have mentioned this before, but I wish we could get rid of the wind noise. I understand the wind is part and parcel with sailing and I realize we wouldn't have your fantastic channel without it, but I can't help but think that if it was removed it would somehow align with what you are trying to achieve. Last time I'll mention it and keep up the work. It's all very much appreciated.
