    AVEL DRO
Do you want a boat like mine?
Avel Dro is an Ilur designed by François Vivier, and built of clinker plywood by Les Charpentiers Reunis of Cancale in 1994. I bought her in France in 2003 to import her into the UK, and more recently returned her to France again before the present Brexit trade restrictions were imposed.* The design is based closely on the traditional inshore fishing boats of Brittany in the early years of the twentieth century - hence her simple boom-less lugsail rig and lack of a mainsheet horse, (sometimes controversial among my viewers). Although rare in Britain, Ilurs are relatively common in France. The name Avel Dro is Breton, and basically means a whirlwind.
    Length 4.44 m
    Sail area 12.2 m²
    Beam 1.70 m
    Draught 0.25 / 0.86 m
    Design category C3
    François Vivier's website (in English):
    www.vivierboats...
Similar dinghies can often be found for sale on the website of the French magazine Le Chasse-Marée:
    www.chasse-mar...
Or try Le Bon Coin, (where you can buy anything in France):
    www.leboncoin.fr
*Since January 2021, due to Brexit, Great Britain (but not Northern Ireland) residents who buy a boat in France or elsewhere in the EU, with the intention of importing it into the UK, must pay VAT and other duties on the import.

Such a nice feel Roger, we have been following you for a few years now and sadly I am now alone following you. My wife died on October 3rd 2022.

Roger, another lovely video. Why your travels make me feel
So calm. I did a solo bicycle ride from South Africa, most southern point to England. Twenty-five thousand kilometres I covered in all.
Seeing your compact, efficient organisation brings back good memories. My trip was undertaken three years ago in my late sixties. I am now semi-invalid and your videos bring back good memories and calm. NEVER stop my friend, never. Stay safe.

I fitted a small electric motor to my boat and it is lovely to move against the wind in total quiet, and made loading the boat on the trailer by myself so easy .

Hmmm. You know you have just crossed the line to the "moped kids"? They grow up to be deaf (what?!), noisy engine type of people. You know the kind. Always revving. Always smelling like burnt oil. Always spoiling the quiet of nature. But you will do it electric and happy.

What strikes me is how eminently suitable your dinghy is for the waterways you visit. She skulls and rows well, and the sail plan is so easily handled. Now if you were a fit 19 year old "mec", there would be a bevy of bikinis like the other sailing channels!

On graveyards... when the USN reactivated reserve ships for the Korean war, they discovered it can cost 75% of the price of a new one to return an old one to service. Add in the costs of properly preserving them in the meantime, which includes creating an airtight seal so you can air condition the interior, and maintaining all the machinery, and you quickly see that it's a luxury only a few (like the USN) can afford. The Marine Nationale is not doing any of this.
Those ships probably start their retirement as spare parts donors for their active sisters, then become training vessels, then practice grounds for special forces exercising their ship-boarding skills, then political and budgetary chess pieces: keep a ship "on the books" and you can argue for a direct replacement. Scrap it and the treasury will say "Well, you scrapped it before we let you buy a replacement, so you obviously don't need a new one!"

I love your videos and have been tagging along with you for a couple years now. I think it’s because open boats are built right into my DNA. Here on the British Columbia coast I was raised on a float camp where there was no other kids to play with so I took to the rowboats for enjoyment. My grandparents an my parents grew up here too so they weren’t freaked out at me going off in the rowboat at 5 and 6 years old as long as I had my life jacket on. At 5 off I went to visit my cousins at their float camp. I made it all the way but sure got heck. I wasn’t allowed in the rowboat for a week. I remember a time crying my eyes out trying to rig a sail but couldn’t. Mix Wick the cook came out of the cookhouse to see what my problem was. She got some string and tied the bed sheet to my mast and away I went - it was wonderful. As a kid I got to use many a open boat each one having a very different feel in the water. Watching your videos I can actually feel your boat within me. Thanks for your real great adventures I love every minute.

Capt.Roger- are you implying the bridge is unnecessary or the traffic is ?Testimony to how rich & delightful is your narration & nature audio, I will admit there are times while my choice is, just enjoying your soundscape, your narration, lapping water over the hull. The modern artsy bridge, the horrible loud music, heavy emphasis on food, is the reason the world is so embedded in a quagmire of disenchantment. Overweight, loud & clumsy we stagger on to the next festival. You, the smart one, tie onto a peaceful shaded shore?, out of the spotlight & in the envy if all watching from the galleries🎈

    • @RogerRoving

The bridge links the Crozon peninsula to Brest. The presqu’île is so sleepy it’s surprising it generates much traffic.
