@@bravesrule384 It was the nature of the club business. I had a relative who owned a popular night club in his area, in the 50's and 60's. His brother I knew better and he died in 1994. For a time he ran the biggest betting/book making operation in the area (about 1 million population). He was protected by a local mobster who had direct ties to carmine galante of the Bonano family.
I guess it was the nature of many types of businesses. A relative of mine was a window cleaner. He had to pay a mobster to buy a route. This guy controlled most of New York city. Once he had the route, no one else could compete. He payed him a commission & it was on the books.
Everything had a mob element. It exists today but not nearly the extent. The power is just not there anymore.

This was a great guest for Megyn to have on. Salvatore gives such honesty about what goes on off the scenes at a time where the public gets no truth about anything.

Vincent Teresa's book "My Life in the Mafia" tells a story about Caan and his connection to the Irish mob. It caused a lot of problems for the Irish and Italians.
Teresa was mistaken when he mentioned that it was the actor who played Sonny, in fact it was Alex Rocco who played Moe Green not James Caan. Alex Rocco was born Alex Petricone and was an associate of the Winter Hill gang in Boston.

Jimmy had a swimclub on the beach in Hollywood, Florida. He made it clear he had to have good relations with the mob in order to do business. I don't think he was connected, I think he was respectful.

I think you are confused because there are two different types of associates, but both types are considered 'connected'. One type is the criminal associate and the other type is legitimate, often a business owner, a union official or maybe even an actor like Jimmy Caan. The latter is often someone who is being extorted. The extortion victim will often use his connections with the mob to get ahead in business. This has sometimes been confusing to federal prosecutors because there are benefits to paying the mob. Some associates don't pay anything, but those are exceptions. Politicians for example and maybe even Jimmy Caan.

I found it hard to be that an Irishman whose grandparents came to Boston and lived in a Irish ethnic neighborhood would approve of Prohibition. But I know that the surprise finding of extra votes from Mayor Richard Daley of Chicago came in at midnight Eastern Standard Time. I was a little boy at that time in my old hometown of NYC. It was talked about in history class in Presidential election several years later when I was in the 7th grade.

The colombo family/Joe Colombo had direct anger against the book, then the movie. Thinking they further smeared italian americans and further exposed the existence of the mafia, to the public. The Colombos then approached, threatened and eventually agreed, to not stand in the way of paramount execs, on the making of the movie. Being granted some say on the production and wording of the movie. To ensure paramount they wouldnt do anything crazy if the movie was made.
It was a historically difficult movie production.

A favor was granted for no trouble on the set. Hire alot of mob associated people. Everything from catering, set building, extras. Sinatra was the #1 mob associated movie person in history.

Its documented that Caan did an Interview and said he and Russo were extremely tight. Also both their famies were tight for many years. Russo was Caan's son Scott's Godfather.

Caan never downplayed an association, watch some interviews from over the years and he certainly alluded to being connected on occasion. This is the first time I've seen this Gravano interview but prior to this, I used to roll my eyes at Caan's insinuations because I hate wannabes...what Sammy said makes sense now.

Talking about mob connections,..my late father was the manager of the historic 500 Club in Atlantic City NJ. back the 1950's and 60's. I still have his personal photo of him and Frank Sinatra together. I still have a Christmas card from FS personally sent to my family in 1962, I have a dressing room photo of Jayne Mansfield holding me in her arms for the camera, and my late uncle Skinny is seen with JFK at the club. Read the book "Chance Of A Lifetime".

Now with Gianni Russo it's a totally different story. His connections definitely affected him getting the role of Carlo in the Godfather.
She also apparently isn't aware that the entire production of the Godfather movie had to be approved by the mob. So the notion that Caan needed permission isn't far fetched any way you look at it.

well the "mob story" is much more complex than people might believe - Lucky Luciano, for example, was the prisoner most visited in history and was then freed because it was useful to the American government, for preparing the landing in Italy during the Second World War. Everbody dealing with the Italian government also knew who Mr. Andreotti and later on Mr. Berlusconi are, they were but both "darlings" of the American government too. The Mob is sometimes a thing people want to feel excited about, depending on situation but, also something acceptable to many and maybe useful too, so that it is possible to scandalize about it but also about some people, who then pretend to be scandalized. No mob would ever exist anywhere without local political support. Who says anything different is telling lies!
