I tought I was the only one that found the Halo CE maps pretty creepy, I remember back in the early 2000s when I was just a child playing those maps alone to explore them and to test the guns, and I always felt that unnerving and creepy sensation of being in an ancient abandoned place, sometimes feeling observed by someone or something hidden around, and just to think when those places where built, by who or for what purpose they were built always scared tf out of me.

    • @HiddenXperia
      @HiddenXperia  4 ปีที่แล้ว +150

Saaaaaame dude, same. The Forerunner maps in particular felt so mysterious and beyond my comprehension. There's something really creepy about a structure so vast and technologically superior that's also abandoned. Makes you wonder why its creators abandoned it

Dude...even after all of these years...I feel the same. The atmosphere of Halo CE was basically being an unstoppable soldier, but at the same time...you were fucking scared shitless due to the layout, ambiance and lore of the whole place. Literally a long forgotten Installation...completely empty, without any trace of inhabitants. Even when I was kicking ass throughout the campaign I felt an itch at the back of my head, that something was watching me. Some of the areas back in the day just straight up scared me and made me feel terrified and uncomfortable, mainly the underground areas...that's why Halo CE will always be something special.

I love the creepy, mysterious ambiance of Halo: CE - both in the campaign and multiplayer. None of the other Halo games have been able to recapture that unnerving feeling of the superunknown that we got in the first game. I really hope Halo Infinite tries to capitalize on that.
My favorite map, even with others from Halo on PC included: Sidewinder. Such good memories playing it with friends when I was younger, and I love big, open maps.

My favorite HCE map, gameplay and lore wise, is Chill Out.
In almost every game with forge mode, I've remade this map because I love it so much.
In Reach, the level was partially submerged in the water, with that one glitch that lets you do that (in place of the fog effects). Assuming the map was some kind of oversized covenant freezer, I liked to think the place shut down and just melted everywhere. Colors fading away and everything, creating a damp, colorless facility.
In Halo 4 it was the same thing, minus the water, a bit run down, and taken over by the UNSC as a temporary base. More cover, more human weapons.
In H2A, it was the same thing again but ruined and broken down, with a few missing rooms and new pathways.
Finally, in Halo 5, the teleporters were shut down (removed with spark effects in their places), as the level was further broken down with pipes falling out of the walls, creating clamber and spring-jump spots for Halo 5's improved gameplay.
Assuming Infinite has good forge, I'll probably add to this even more. I like to think I've created my own little timeline for my favorite map here.

This video reminds me of why I got into CE when I first played it.
I remember playing with my cousins on their Xboxes when it first came out. But then the PC version came out, and I got to play by myself...
My favorite memories of solo playing focus on just how eerie and creepy the whole thing was, but also feeling a sense of epic adventure to it all. The main menu, with its fly-around camera centered on the ring-world, the Gregorian style chanting... then booting the campaign on heroic and blowing through the whole thing in the dark, alone, on my parents' computer.
I distinctly remember thinking "Keyes doesn't keep his gun loaded? The balls on that man..." in the first mission, being really engrossed in Assault on the Control Room, having a hard time with, but still LOVING the Library (after being freaked out with the whole mission 343 Guilty Spark), and being so devastated when FoeHammer went down in the final mission...
The whole creep factor, the mystery, the music, the ambiance, and the grandeur of the whole game STILL gives me goosebumps, 20 years later. And I can't tell you how many times I played this game as a kid... Don't even get me started on Halo 3, though. I'll go forever about Halo 3... (skipped Halo 2 in this because, admittedly, I didn't play it very much until right before Halo 3 came out).

Have you ever thought by the glyphs you see at 5:15, is a representation of the Halo firing? Like seriously look at it and its design. The middle symbol represents Halo, but the projectiles one both sides of this design is the ring's pulse it fires once activated. Perhaps this was a warning for those who fought on this battlefield. A sign of something more powerful than they could have ever imagined.

I think the old graphics put the maps in a kind of uncanny valley, especially with future Halos putting it into perspective. It seems so close to being what we're used to now, but just far enough that its a but unnerving. It probably doesn't help that the layouts are wild and super different from modern 3 lane maps. And for me at least, it feels like I shouldn't be playing the game. The game was made without the expectation that someone like me, who's only a few weeks older than it, would be playing it on a next gen console with online matchmaking.

  • @Halo_Legend
    @Halo_Legend 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I see you tried to look at Halo:CE multiplayer maps in a more sensual, subconscious impression type of light and scavenge any scrap of lore there is. I like that, it's a fun idea.
I have some constructive criticism though.
Many of your sentences are just filler, worthless on their own, do not add anything of substance, and your ability to make words work together does not hide that. You also rely on buzz words and idioms too much.
And I know that you decided to come up with your own lore sometimes, but it didn't really resonate with me, seemed kind of infantile, so I counted those times as those worthless sentences, hope you don't mind. You can disagree with any of my examples.
Buzz words/sentences: "eerie and creepy", "something more serious", "peaceful homestead" (it's Forerunner, we don't even know how their homes looked like, don't bullshit us), "haunting", "only the tips of this iceberg" (really? Maybe try using your own words more), "something more sinister"
Worthless sentences: 3:40 (till the end of the map, same goes for next time stamps),
4:08 (that air part was an attempt on deepening the presented world, which came out bad - it's just a multiplayer map after all, but that second part you just pulled out of your ass, it was embarrassing),
6:12 (pulled out of ass again, you know that banshee icon was for gameplay purposes only, don't try to incorporate that into the lore if you want to sound credible),
7:03 (adds nothing, only implies Forerunners made it icey to kill Flood, what isn't proven by anything),
8:16 (you had nothing of substance to say about that whole map; futhermore: "Timberland(...) paints a far less serene picture (...). Among (...) lies many memories" - you can't say that the map paints a certain picture because you imagined something. If you saw any actual clues to Timberland being "less serene", you should have shown em),
    8:40 (haha just a joke ;) ),
13:57 ("vast, infinite" that's called a buttery butter),
15:05 (that also seems like it falls under "pulled out of ass" category, but I haven't checked Halo Nation),
    17:05
That incorporation of both educated guesses and plain old imagination for the sake of good storytelling experience didn't work very well, I'm afraid. But good video overall.

    Serious question.
Now, when you see the halo ring from afar, it encircles evenly around the planet. It's the same distance in the sky all the way round.
So as you can see here and other spots thruought the game, why does the Halo ring get bigger just above the horizon? Shouldn't it be just as small and seemingly skinny looking as if you were looking straight up at it? Because the way it looks here, the Halo ring seems to be off and it gets closer to the planet, even tho as i said, from a birds eye view, the Halo ring is the same distance above, all the way around. In summation, im not sure why the Halo ring looks bigger just above the horizon.
Thanks for your time if you care to give any meaningful feedback. 👍

I mean are we just the product of some cosmic coincidence... or is it really god watching everything ya know, with a plan for us. I don't know man but it keep's me up at night. What? I meant why are we out here in this canyon. Oh uhhhh yeah. What was all that stuff about god? Uhhh hm nothing. Do you want to talk about it? No. You sure? Yeah. Seriously though, why are we out here, as far as I can tell it's just a box canyon in the middle of nowhere with no way in or out. mm hm. The only reason we set up a red base here is because they have a blue base over there, and the only reason they have a blue base over there is because we have a red base here. Yeah, that's because we're fighting each other. No no, but I mean if we were to pull out today and they were to come take our base they would have two bases in the middle of a box canyon, whop de fuckin' do. I know Hidden will appreciate this and I had to remember the dialog so sorry if I messed up something. :)

When I read (MLP fanfics), I almost always play Halo 1 multiplayer map ambient noise in the background. I have memories of exploring the expansive maps on Halo 1 PC, always feeling like something was watching me, or that I had just seen someone disappear around the corner. So now when I hear the ambient sounds, I feel a mix of nostalgia and anxiety. It's a really surreal feeling, in a good way.

My favorite map was Chiron it's just something about the feeling of not knowing what will be encountered on the other side of its a magnum wielding noob, or a incoming rocket.

I miss the old Halo map design. Every game after Halo 3 just didn't feel the same because they just felt ripped right out of the campaign and uninspired

I know in recent years we have shit on the gearbox port for graphical issues, but the maps made for Halo PC were pretty good. Did they make them?

For me, Damnation is the creepiest because of the strange, flood like goo that constantly drips. It could also be part of the sewer system, but wheres the creepyness in that?

I remember falling asleep on Chiron, and waking up to the Xbox home noises and some strange screams in the background. Wack.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who realised everything's abandoned, when I played this 15 years ago. You've got a new sub.

All forerunner structures on the rings are probably just built with the flood in mind - battle simulations, containment, testing etc.
