Why not to "Peak" and tune, clip AMC limiters. It only causes distortion.

    This is the type of radio I want! Tuned and Aligned properly! See this is what scares me about buying a radio these days from some of these places that are out there. The custom add on’s and tune jobs that you get with the radio. Sure, it sounds like a good deal. But usually makes your audio transmission Crap!
    And how do you know that the “tech” 🙄 can even use the equipment he has?
    I guess I’ll have to do more research. LOL Or send my radio to you!
    Moral of the story I guess is, have the radio tuned and if you want more POWER. Buy a linear! 🤣🤣🤣

    Thank you, thank you thank you.For once this is coming from somebody besides me. You cannot imagine how many times over almost 40 years of radio repair I have been called everything in the book, how the guy at the truck stop says I'm lying about my radio repairs, how many D11's in Cobra 29's put back in place, how my telewave 44 (which does have a fudge factor under 30mhz) and my IFR AM/FM 1200SS is junk, and how their Dosy meters are dead on accurate etc, etc. Eric 12374 unfortunately nailed it.

    Thanks for the video I'm going to ask a local cb shop about this procedure to reduce modulation noise. I had my radio peaked recently but I haven't had any complaints about my modulation signal or my loudness. I believe I reached a man at a mile marker 8 from mile marker 60 based on his claim.
    My shop showed me at 20 watt pep but didn't tell me the rms. I have a dual antenna (5' 6" firestick about 8' separated) on my semi truck mirrors. The radio is a road King. Hopefully it's working good but since I had to trust them without seeing any proof of the signal condition and power I can't really say anything of it's effectiveness.

I’m sure you’ve heard the rumors of uncle Charlie adding FM to the Class D modulation package or whatever so I’m interested if there’s a common radio maybe a President export for now that you would find appropriate to demonstrate an FM CB Radio Transceiver Alignment. My old Cobra 29 Service Manual doesn’t cover that lol. If this isn’t possible could you maybe post an online resource or tap another TH-camr for the task? My 40 year old TRC-457 & 458 still have the wax in the slugs. That being said you can modify or increase your radio for 100% modulation.
    Some radios may require a slight mod to get full modulation. Some would clip so much you'd be lucky screaming to get 50%.
    But clipping the limiter gets you a radio that sounds like crap. Gritty lousy distorted over driven audio. I try to tell people that all the time.
    Most people won't listen and just want to see maximum output.

    I would like to see how to modify my d104 mic so it produces more low frequency responce "or less tinny-ish tones". posibly by adding parts of a crossover network to aid in filtering out such high freqincies. or possibly redesign the amp section with a three or four segment equalizer pre-amp. so I could do this myself.

    • @mikesradiorepair
      @mikesradiorepair  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      kf4dcy
      That's why I don't and never have liked D104's. I'll stick with Turner mics for their out of the box flat frequency response or if I want adjustability use a studio mic and rack system.

      @mikesradiorepair  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      kf4dcy
      The standard modification in one is to punch two more holes in the aluminum microphone element cone same size as the one that's already there and evenly spaced. That changing several cap and resistor values greatly improves low end response. You can also just throw out the original preamp board and make up a new one using FET's that has adjustable tone control. There are several different schematics available online. In the end its just easier to get a mic that has a flat response curve stick like a Turner base mic, no need for any modifications.

    I am just trying to do the same as you did here
    I have the same spectrum analyzer as you
    My thing is i cant get a stable display of the side bands and harmonics
    How do you couple the analyzer to the radio as not to destroy the analyzer?
    Also is there certain settings on the analyzer?

    • @Sloxx701
      @Sloxx701 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You would need to build or buy an RF tap / coupler, you don't physically connect the input of a spec analyzer directly to the output of a radio (if you did this already you may have damaged the front end of the analyzer). You can also use attenuators to cut the signal's power down even more. And you would also use a good DC block to further protect the analyzer, as many of them cannot handle DC voltage of any kind on the RF input.
      I've honestly seen people spend thousands on a spectrum analyzer or a VNA only to destroy it instantly as they would directly connect it to what they were measuring without using blocks, couplers, or attenuators of any kind. These devices are super sensitive, so be careful.

  • @ThePolaranmessage
    @ThePolaranmessage 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I can see your point, but these are often clipped cause the AMC is too op. I have a ranger t radio, and it has AMC, and it puts out barely any modulation using the stock mic. so you can say don't clip it even if your life depends on it. their gonna clip it anyways, cause with the AMC it barely modulates unless you put an amplified mic on it.

    • @Eric-zi1oz
      @Eric-zi1oz 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know ill get flamed for this but the older radios seem to only talk decent when you open them up.. I have seen older realistic 40 am mobiles barely put out any modulation with the AMC intact even with a power mic.

    • @ThePolaranmessage
      @ThePolaranmessage 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Eric 12374 why would you be flamed? your words are true, I have a teaberry ranger t, and it has the stupid AMC deal. it barely has any modulation in it as it is now. I can literally whistle my lungs flat and it only modulates a little, using sideband shows this. ik this guy is saying not to clip it, but at the same time, you gotta take into account that these new junker radios are Chinese built. of course their gonna have shitty audio when you adjust it to put out any real modulation lol. so Eric, I'm with you on this one

      Disagree. I can take extremely precise measurements with my HP and Rohde & Schwarz power meters. Depending on which sensor head I use I can take measurements accurately at -130dBm. That's 1 times 10 to the -16th or 16 places past the decimal point. There isn't a oscilloscope that can measure that low. Oscilloscopes are good for taking very rough measurements. Most other instruments like power meters and spectrum analyzers can measure numerous orders of magnitude more accurately.

      If people would filter their output from NPC and such and run their amps clean I would not care how much power they ran or how much modulation they where running. The real problem though is that these knuckle heads never filter out the harmonics and are transmitting on sub-side bands and splattering on multiple channels tearing up and getting into all kinds of electronics etc....
      No one cares because most of the consumers are ignorant as can be and ignorance is bliss! The hacks doing all of this are making money by pandering to their customer's. It takes too much time and cost you too much money to educate your clients! It is easier to just say no and send them on their way.
      On top of this a lot of these "CB Technicians" and "Custom Amp Builders" are drama queens and encourage drama and bickering on social media because publicity and controversy are "FREE" and bring them a lot of business! It does not matter what causes the controversy it funnels people into their shop which is $$$$.
      My youngest radio is from 1998 and it is all factory stock part wise. All my other radio's are 1980's or older! All of them are 100 stock some still have the factory warranty sticker in place. I suspect the cap's or a resistor will fail before the finals or voltage regulator will fail!

      It has nothing to do with the government or "the man". When you mess with the limiter circuit on the radio all of that new found power is not on the channel you are on. It is splattering the adjacent channels or is in harmonics transmitting in the 54 MHz, 81 MHz, 108 MHz and so on frequency ranges.

      577 some of this tech talk is bs. I know for a fact a lot of radios on the bowl 11 28 20 sound damn good. This is why you have to learn for yourself.I know of a lot of my buddys hqve these peak and tuned radios and sound very good so go figure.

      @@dougsmith6220 yeah you can keep a radio perfectly clean with a peak and tune.. basically peeking out all the transformers to 100% efficiency where you have to watch is your carrier some radios don't like more than four Watts or they'll swing back. And modulation that's a whole nother beast.

      If you can't keep the audio within the channel, it is not doing good.

    I'm sorry but we CBers for the most part, the VERY MOST part, live in the real world and cannot afford $10,000 worth of test equipment nor can we drive a hundred miles to have someone with $10,000 of test equipment work on our stuff. It would have been better to have shown, how, with basic equipment, that your average CBer could adjust a radio to a legal 4 watts output with 100% modulation, or at least get safely close to that. I'm sure a millionaire could show me how to live the rich style but with me not having the millions I couldn't live like he just taught me, so why not just make shows that teach what can be done and not what won't be done. Stop preaching, and start teaching.

      Unfornately there is no way to adjust modulation without test equipment. At the very least you have to have a oscilloscope and a audio signal generator. Any repair shop would have this. If they don't then they are not a repair shop.

      I guess you should just take the radio out of the box and put a mic on it and call it a day and live with it i guess, LOL.. whatever...........

      Every radio I've ever owned since the late 70's was bone stock, only the occasional alignment or parts repair thats it. And that's why I never had one problem to this day.
