Great great video! I love that you cover sleep, moments and diet areas. My child has never been to school, he sleeps 9-11 hours a day, he is hungry all the time. Hello Aparna, mom of 6 year old here. We just moved to the US in 2023 and I am homeschooling him. It was great to listen to you. My challenges are managing screen time and social activities, havent found a homeschooling community yet.
What part of the US are you living in? For screen time, we have set boundaries and the kids know that it’s not freely accessible to them. We also explained to them the harms of excessive screens Also, the prepared environment helps a lot. If you keep enticing projects in his reach ready to be enjoyed, he wont want the screens as much. You're videos have helped me go from considering homeschooling to deciding to go for it. Thank you! Do you use a specific source for scope and sequence for the Montessori math? What are your favorite resources for teaching yourself how and when to present each math lesson?
Observing the kids is my most reliable source for determining what to teach and figuring out the scope. For sequence, it was a natural progression of introducing them to quantities and then starting operations. I wrote a blog post to answer how our progression is going - vineetkannan.com/?p=98 I will keep updating it as we do more advanced things like algebra, probability, etc. This will also provide you with all the resources and materials we use. Let me know if you have any more questions. You can leave those on the blog, too.
Fantastic! Thank you for sharing your journey. Can you also share the challenges you might have faced during your unschooling/homeschooling family? How did you tackle questions from your friends and family?
There were questions from family members for sure, and I answered them respectfully. I address many questions in my previous video about why we're homeschooling. We haven't faced too many challenges to be honest. So far, I notice that my kids are learning happily everyday and they're thriving.
Such a helpful video. Thank you! I'm interested in anything and everything homeschool related. I love your logic and practical mindset. I would love to see how you made the coding game with lego and more on game schooling 🙂

It's been great learning about your parenting approach👌🏻I've been binge-watching your videos for the past few days, and many of your insights have really inspired me😇 I've a few questions on some of the points. I'll ask one by one in the comments below👇🏻
I loved the idea of game schooling, I also heard Elon Musk said that : generally you want education to be as close to a video game as possible, like a good video game; you do not need to tell your kid to play video games, they will play video games on autopilot all day.
I have heard of the Charlotte Mason method but haven't had a chance to look into it. Montessori spoke to my engineering mind so profoundly that I haven't looked deeply into other education philosophies. If you have a good resource recommendation for me to learn about it, please share.
Personally, I think another reason to reduce screen time and make screen time very intentional etc, it because if they’re getting these constant hits of dopamine without doing anything difficult or that involves learning and is super passive, I think it makes it much more difficult for them to enjoy the simple things. I don’t see kids enjoying “fraction games”, if many of their experiences during the day or week are passive dopamine hits through the screen. Life needs to be a little boring in order to enjoy the simple things like maths games or being read to.
If someone who doesn't have any teaching education is really doing a better job than the education system of a country, then there is something seriously wrong with schools at the moment. I know there is no way my family could've replaced my schools and teachers even though they were both highly educated and good people with full of love. This must be because the education system back then in Turkey was really really good. Watching these videos, in the US, I worry my kids will not have the same quality of education that i had in Turkey.
Do your best. Tour lots of schools before choosing one and supplement what they can’t get in school at home. We all don’t need to homeschool. I do it because I can and I see my kids thriving and loving learning. Those who can’t, shouldn’t but stay on top of things(not pressuring kids, but ensuring they love learning and education is looked at as a long term growing opportunity, not just what the kids did in a semester)
I appreciate your idea of stocking food with only healthy options so that everyone can mix and match. But what about cooked food like rice and curries? Do you only prepare dishes you know others will eat, to avoid spoilage? And if there are leftovers, do you refrigerate and use them later? In my home, I tend to cook meals that everyone will enjoy. Even if the kids don't feel like having the dish that particular day, I have to finish the food to prevent waste. How do you manage to minimize food waste? I'm hesitant to try new recipes because I'm unsure if other family members will like them. If they don't enjoy the meal, I usually end up having to finish it to avoid wasting food. How do you manage such scenarios?
Me and hubby are both of with experimenting with recipes so we cook new dishes all the time. We encourage the kids to at least try everything, if they don’t want to eat, its up to them. This way, we have created a wide variety of foods they like to eat. Salads, lentils, traditional Indian dishes like dosas and idlis etc. Avocado toasts are a big hit too. We don’t end up wasting much. At least 3/4 will eat the foods me and husband cook
Wonderful things u explained in the video . I am confused of should i or not homeschool my 2 year old but ur videos are giving confidence to start doing it. Would like to know how and where does a parent start? Thank you
For a two-year-old, don't worry about formal education just yet. Take them outside a lot. Let them learn from nature. Just go slow, they will observe the leaves blowing in the wind, and sand falling with gravity. Take nature walks every day if possible. Include them in your daily life activities like helping around the kitchen, cleaning with spray bottles, and playing with open-ended materials like sticks, stones, and blocks(avoid button-operated toys). Everything you do every day is what they would want to imitate, so model good behavior, kindness, and empathy. This is the best way to start homeschooling.
Hi, your video really inspired me. You put so much thought and strategy into every day. I have an honest question as Im new to the homeschool process. Do kids give exams, or how do they get into college/university?
No exams for younger kids. When they show interest to go to a Uni, I will have their progress/projects documented and then I plan to train them on how to take tests like SAT, GRE etc.
@@diptir7533 thank you ☺️ We do co sleep. After trying everything, this has worked best for our family. We travel so much and some times we’re sleeping in 50 different beds in a few months. The only way to make it all work is to co sleep for us. I’ll make a video specifically about sleep soon
Social skills are important for kids..they have to face everything from childhood or else when they grew up they might become too sensible and might not be able to fight against the negativity that comes from society 👍
Kids can form many deep relationships outside the school. What homeschoolers avoid is the toxic comparisons, bullying and unnecessary competition. They build a deep trust for their parents and family which is priceless.
Awesome video, thank you! I have a good question. What do you do about state testing requirements for homeschool, to make sure your children get the required scores? Here in Virginia, we have to test once a year before August date, & our children must achieve at least a 4 stanine score. We also must submit the test results to the county’s superintendent.
@@kerrysp3777 every state has different requirements. We live in Hawaii and the state does not mandate any testing which is great. I don’t think testing is productive especially for young children. It breaks their confidence or builds unnecessary pressure. If you must test, I’d recommend a teaching approach where they work with spaced repetition and active recall techniques. Those will be helpful in the future too and they’ll know their subjects very well before testing. If you’ve ever used the Duolingo app, I believe they use this methodology. You can’t pass a level till you get all answers right and they repeat your previous mistakes in the next lessons. This method at least makes sure that the student has understood the contents well.
I'd like to know why you take supplements like Omega, Vitamin B12, and Vitamin D3. How often do you take them? Are these for the whole family or just the kids? Is it because you found that these levels were low in your blood tests? I noticed in your previous videos that you spend a lot of time in the sun. So is it still necessary to take the supplements?
We all take these foundational supplements. Even after spending a lot of time in the sun, it’s very hard to get optimum levels for blood serum Vitamin D(Greater than 50). Too much sun can be harmful, so I like to balance exposure with supplementation. Kids need Vitamin D for proper bone growth, so I don’t want to risk deficiency. Same for Omega 3 and B12. Easy to supplement and very impactful to the body.
Can you share how you prepared the environment for your 3 year old when you saw his interest in maths? What material you got and how you helped him use the materials?
Kudos to you and your husband for doing this!! It can't be easy. Since you said you are an engineer how you balance this with work? Do you work full time? Does your husband work full time?
@@miss_happy-e3e we’re early retirees but started from nothing, we saved hard and invested early on. I talk about it here-th-cam.com/users/shorts3Tm9ukpZ0gI?si=E8kpw6t7ZlXtGJR7
What about when your kids were toddlers, did you sleep train them? Do they sleep by themselves? We sleep trained our toddler, and he cries every night and morning to come sleep with dada
Our kids sleep with us, especially as they got older and we traveled so much, there was no sleeping separately in different rooms. They strongly prefer not sleeping separately and we honor it. It’s a short period of time in life and I love sleeping with them.
I'd like to know how often you recommend doing blood tests for both kids and adults to ensure everything is in order. Also, what key parameters are typically included in these tests? For example, Vitamin D, hemoglobin (HB), and what else?
In our family, adults do bloodwork every year to ensure things are good. For the kids, I had my daughter’s bloodwork done for the first time when she turned 7. I don’t believe in too much testing for the kids, their growth and demeanor are good indicators of their health but every now and then, it feels good that the numbers are in alignment as well.
I'll make a detailed video about some STEM projects you can do with your kids. Honestly, for a 3 year old, the most important brain development activity is outdoor, unstructured play and learning the ways of nature. Trees, waves, rivers, forests, sand and rocks is what they really need to learn to navigate the real world and learn natural problem solving. But I will think more about how to introduce coding to a very young child, as the basic principle is nothing but problem solving.
Kids younger than 11 or 12 only yearn to spend quality time with parents. We meet a homeschooling group once a week so our kids meet and make friends and have interaction with someone other than us. As they turn into teens, they will create their own world and move around with more independence to make and meet friends. When young, they need present parents to grow with security and know in their hearts that no matter what happens, my parents got my back. The kids who don’t get enough of their parents have a tough teenage and grow up to be insecure adults.
@@chandnisethia7260 it all depends on the country and state you live in. Many states in the US don’t require kids to go to school till kindergarten(5 years old) or first grade
My child is 5 years old and he immensely loveling to read books ... Can you suggest me how could i take him ahead... He has his own library with more than 250 books Reading is like a spiritual practice
He’s already doing great! Most kids love books at this age and you can keep reading to them 2-4 times a day. Ensure his holistic development by giving him a lot of time for unstructured play and body movement. Time in nature is critical for a young child. If he shows deep interest in something, provide opportunities and resources for him to challenge himself(only if he wishes to) At times, I like to remove all books and toys from their environment to give them a chance to get creative without the usual resources too. Eg kids will create incredible projects with recycling materials like cardboard etc.
Hi dear I love the concept of homeschooling I am also planning to implement but I have a doubt that how will our kids be validated by normal education systems once there are done with Home schooling... I mean how will we know if you are done with home schooling and what next after home schooling will the other education institutions accept home schooled candidates?..how will they get a job.. please enlighten me.
I am interested about homeschooling.. but so scared about Maths.. plus I am not understanding when we have two kids. My elder one always come and reply on behalf of my younger ones. Not sure how to handle this. Please suggest
@@lakshmidevi5756 why are you scared about maths? If you label it as something scary, the kids will feel that Energy. Maths can be so much fun. If you had negative association with it, make sure you work on healing yourself to try and break the cycle.
@@lakshmidevi5756 it’s natural for elder kids to show off their skills. It’s good at times too because that inspires the younger ones to work harder. For other times, Give them information in a gentle way that they might think they’re helping but at times it’s ok to pause and discover what how their younger siblings are thinking and only speak up if they need help.
Do you have any online resources for Hindi. I'm American (Black, not Indian) and we have a lot of Indian friends so I'm teaching Hindi. Low level and beginner would be great!! He's 2 lol but he understands quite a bit
I haven’t had a chance to look around yet, I figured that I could teach my kids Hindi via games. That said, they discovered that Duolingo has a Hindia track. They like to practice the letters on the app(though I must say that some of the sounds/English interpretations are incorrect, but I still think it’s a good place to start). On a Reddit forum, someone mentioned that www.hindipod101.com is good(haven’t used it yet)
Spend lots of time with them. Invest in their days and what they’re learning. Supplement anything that they’re not able to understand in school with 1-1 instruction and projects

Thank you so much for sharing all this information freely. Blessings!

I've a few questions on some of the points. I'll ask one by one in the comments below👇🏻
Keep going, sister. Thanks.
Most welcome 😊
I loved the idea of game schooling, I also heard Elon Musk said that : generally you want education to be as close to a video game as possible, like a good video game; you do not need to tell your kid to play video games, they will play video games on autopilot all day.

Such vital points. Thank you x
Thank you for your videos! What do you think of the classical method of education, For example; Charlotte Mason?
@@jessicavergara1932 agreed!
@@jessicavergara1932 these are my thoughts exactly! I’ll make a short video on just this topic!
Excellent. I subscribed.
What are some projects you recommend for a 7 and 3 year old and I would love more information on the coding without a computer for kids.

Very helpful video please keep sharing 🙂
Love your pt on sleep. Do you co sleep? Would love a video on sleep health/b3st practices for kids
@@diptir7533 thank you ☺️
We do co sleep.
Could you share all the resources you use, please do a video on all the games you play and other resources you use. It will be great use for us

Can u share a video... In homeschooling how could we make them appear for their higher studies... Grade 10th and 12th...
it will vary a lot by the country and state you live in
I'd like to know how often you recommend doing blood tests for both kids and adults to ensure everything is in order.
Thank you for such valuable information! I’m interested in the coding activity. How can I adapt it for a 3 year old?
I'll make a detailed video about some STEM projects you can do with your kids. Honestly, for a 3 year old, the most important brain development activity is outdoor, unstructured play and learning the ways of nature. Trees, waves, rivers, forests, sand and rocks is what they really need to learn to navigate the real world and learn natural problem solving. But I will think more about how to introduce coding to a very young child, as the basic principle is nothing but problem solving.
@@AparnaJain1 Thank you so much! Looking forward to it!
Loved this … but I was curious as to what do you do for them making same age friends at young age …is it important?
Kids younger than 11 or 12 only yearn to spend quality time with parents. We meet a homeschooling group once a week so our kids meet and make friends and have interaction with someone other than us.
As they turn into teens, they will create their own world and move around with more independence to make and meet friends.
When young, they need present parents to grow with security and know in their hearts that no matter what happens, my parents got my back.
The kids who don’t get enough of their parents have a tough teenage and grow up to be insecure adults.
Hey my daughter is 20 months old and i want to start homeschooling. Do i need to enroll somewhere?
@@chandnisethia7260 it all depends on the country and state you live in. Many states in the US don’t require kids to go to school till kindergarten(5 years old) or first grade
My child is 5 years old and he immensely loveling to read books ...
Can you suggest me how could i take him ahead...
He has his own library with more than 250 books
Reading is like a spiritual practice
He’s already doing great! Most kids love books at this age and you can keep reading to them 2-4 times a day.
Ensure his holistic development by giving him a lot of time for unstructured play and body movement.
Time in nature is critical for a young child.
If he shows deep interest in something, provide opportunities and resources for him to challenge himself(only if he wishes to)
At times, I like to remove all books and toys from their environment to give them a chance to get creative without the usual resources too. Eg kids will create incredible projects with recycling materials like cardboard etc.
