There's a better way to counter the spin from a set of rotating barrels - a second, equal sized set of spinning barrels that spin the other way. "Do you know what Nemesis means?"

One problem with that if they spin outwards the gyroscopic forces will cause it to tilt upwards when flying forward and tilt downwards when flying backwards
To be fair, two big enough guns spinning towards or away from each other could possibly be enough to just bend the entire ship into a V shape depending on its layout

It's the same reason most helicopters use an anti torque rotor. A small anti torque rotor is less mechanically complex and lighter than an entire second main rotor and so 99% of the helicopters designs out there are single main rotor with an anti torque rotor. Sometimes kludgy but simple works out to be the best solution. There are exceptions like the CH-47 and K-Max but those are highly specialized machines where the extra complexity of a second main rotor actually makes sense.
I think the author is also a fan of the A-10 Thunderbolt II, commonly and affectionately called the Warthog, or Hog. The description is pretty much the same. Take a bigass gun and build a plane around it. But this time, make it spaceworthy and give it a pissed off AI. Kudos.

We ended up being used as almost mercenaries as payment made it easy to get us to fight. The main human character it was noted could swim and how odd that was as well as our auditory range. One of the evil species had psychic powers they tried to use on a captive but some part of our mind fought back. There was a ground war off world and it was noted how adaptable we were in our strategy. That's the most I can remember
