Hi, I really enjoy your clear teaching style! I tried to make a placemat and I got 'bowing' happening. I was told to adjust the differential feed, but the old serger I used doesn't have that feature. In order to try on another machine, what should the differential feed be set at, please? Or would it just be long stitch length and width? Novice here, thanks.
Hello Sharon! Thanks for watching and leaving your comments and questions! Let me try to help. First of all, there are quite a few variables. Namely, type of fabric, batting, serger and serger settings, and of course handling by the stitcher. Here are a few tips to eliminate the rippling or "bowing" of the seams. It is always helpful to have firm fabric. Fabric cut parallel to the selvedge is always more stable than fabric cut from side to side. Lengthwise grain has little to no stretch on a woven fabric and crosswise grain always has some stretch. If you do use cross wise strips, one way to help counteract stretching is to starch fabric pieces before sewing. Regular spray starch will work but it has a tendency to stick to the iron. I prefer Mary Ellen's Best Press.This may help to eliminate the bowing if you do not have differential feed. Also, take care to handle the fabric without stretching, and even make a point to ease layers into the presser foot as you serge. This means you would be using your fingers to push the fabric in a bit as you feed it into the machine. A wide 4 thread stitch with a stitch length of about 4 should be just right. Cut your pieces a little longer than you need so you can trim and even up when you're done. If you do have differential feed and want to use it to help ease the fabric layers, you would start at 1.5 and increase the number as needed. It will take some testing to get the right settings. I did some serging using 4 thread and someone in a group told me I should use a three thread because it was quarter inch. Do you agree? Thanks for the great video. So inspiring!

If you use the left needle with three threads it would be the same except that without the second needle the stitch is not as secure. In other words, a four thread stitch gives a seam the most stability and strength. If you used a three-thread stitch with the right needle instead of the left, your seam would actually be smaller than a quarter inch. I say a standard four thread balanced stitch is the way to go. Can you use 2 inches x 12 inches (length) and is so how do you connect the blocks with the serger? Or should the strips be the length you need say for a twin bed. I think I worded that correctly. Basically what you are doing in the video using the short strips, I don't understand how you but the blocks together to get a nice size quilt.
Hi Shannon! You can cut the strips any length you want. Of course you can also vary the size of the strip width. If you wanted a larger size piece you would cut strips longer, and then keep adding until you get the width you need for your quilted piece. It's possible to figure this out mathematically, but remember that you will lose some of the width with each seam. I suggest making a sample until you get the hang of the process. also, it's best to make something that doesn't have to be an exact, precise size. I have a medical issue which limits what I can do. Sewing in short stretches is something I CAN do. I’m struggling to find projects for which I have all of the necessary supplies., and I’m social distancing as requested. I found this video, and I’m wondering if I could use different sizes of strips? I have some coordinated fabric, but one piece is smaller than the other two and not big enough to make the strips as directed. What do you think? Also, could you provide some guidance on how to design the placemat? Thank you in advance. Maybe others could use this help, also.
Hi Dale! Thanks for reaching out with your question. If you want to use different widths for your strips you can certainly do that. Just match the lining side and the batting for each of you different strip widths. It also really helps to label your pieces so you know the order you want to follow.
