The landing of a space shuttle in a rotating space station would be quite difficult. A lifting platform or mechanical griparms would be required to keep the shuttle steady during landing.
Even at this basic yet attractive level, what this does is bring back the versimilitude, the flavor this film had...something that cannot be told to another. In 1968, in a Cinerama theater, it wasn't just the immensity of the film, it was your visceral response to it's magnificence. Like remembering a smell, 2001 is remembered for it's intoxication on a super grand level. Would Kubrick cut it differently now? Would he take out the phone call? Would he want to go back and redo the very first ships that looked 2-D? Would you?
Nicely done. I went to see 2001 at the TIFF Bell Lightbox on Sunday. INCREDIBLE experience. The Blue Danube sequence was simply gorgeous to watch on a proper movie screen..
The most amazing thing was seeing it back in 1968....!! Ships with glass cockpits , even ipads ( Discovery) my friends and In the Astoria cinema Brighton age 16 we thought it was time travel!!
@bbbnnnmmmt I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Celestia is a great space simulation program. Not only are all these ships in the video present, but you can fly with them, interact with them, change course around them, etc. We also have over 40 ships from the StarTrek universe, and dozens from the StarWars movies. Further info is on my website.
my last years of graduate school-during a few days of vacation, from Paris-my parents joined me there-and we visited Ernst and Wolfgang-good friends' of father. they took us to a great dance hall-this waltz was next to be played-my mother excused her self-and i was waiting with anticipation for him to ask me to dance...lo, and behold-he came to me, bowed and offered me is hand-i curtsied and gave him my own. i was wearing a beautiful long dress-and worried that i would become and entangled within it - BUT I DIDN'T! and we dance-and we danced and we danced-AND MOST GLORIOUSLY! for you, good gentlemen of Google plus; my friends! ENJOY!

The only downside to this CGI is that there are partial shadows; something that can't exist in space due to the lack of atmosphere which dissipates light. The original film had the sharp lined shadows spot on.
At 3:45; note where the pilot and co-pilot sit, at 5:40; that's what you should see... stars, but in the movie we see a view parallel to the surface out the pilot and co-pilot's window. ;-)
It says something about this movie, when you realize that no one will EVER be able to hear this music, and not think of the space station sequence in 2001.
At 5:35; In the movie you can see the moon base visible through the windows, despite the bridge is facing up (vertically). ;-) At 7:00; In the movie the LEM loos like it has eyes and a mouth. ;-D
Hello Frank: First of all, I want to congratulate you, for this amazing work, and others ( for example, Star Trek). I enjoyed your videos very much. Also I would like to suggest, that you could another videos, maybe with Babylon V, or even Battlestar Galactica. I think that they could be very cool. Best Regards, Sailor Ghost
Since the first time I saw this movie with this amazing masterpiece of music, I could never imagine it without space ships nor the zero gravity effect...
The speed of the music is two octaves too fast. If you were able to slow it down enough and reframe the video properly, this would be a favorite of mine. As it is, the animation isn't bad.
Jose Obrador .. That quote ends: ".. Use them together Use them in peace" & is not from "2001, A Space Odyssey" but from it's later sequel "2010, Odyssey Two" 👍💕☺
WONDERFUL! Only true fans of Kubrick's original film could have made such a superb film. LOVE IT!

Wow this is great. Looks like a 2001 A Space Odyssey video game.

Good job!
Epic!
PERFECT
you made this with celestia? :O :O :O
nice work!
Great video, but where was the Star Child?
Kind of nice. Copyright infringement makes it necessary to do this way. The film cuts off the music . . . when 'both' are equally inspiring.
Ummmm Soooooo beautiful thank you. One Love x
Beautifully put together! Love the concept, Loved the movie, this is becoming a reality!!! God is Great ;)

saw this at the Rialto in DENISON TX in 69

guess it was too far out there for them

Is this the same exact music from the movie's soundtrack? The version on my CD sounds slightly different.
Fuckin' brilliant
Must try with Space Engine!
@cookiesofamerica
Put the addon in the "extras" folder, then read the read-me file for what to do next
Mankind explores his limitations.
Where can we find a course to use "Celestia"? ???
@amuvrina
Oui, l'univers des flux à son propre temps
Можно узнать где происходят действия? Место положения дата и время?
le temps et l'espace, le tepo de l'univers?
hey um to install addons do I use the extra file folder or the extra stranded?
Open the Pod bay doors Hal...……….
Sorry, but that's not the layout of the images of Kubrick
and neither is the music the original recording by Herbert von Karajan from the movie either. what a shame
Duh.

Don't get it. If your gonna do it , replicate the entire scene , this is just pointless
