Damon mostly kills on impulse, spirals because Damon feels too much. Everything is magnified. His emotions send him over the edge just as blood does Stefan. Pain, anger, guilt, fear... That's why he rarely talks about his emotions, but when he does, you know he's being honest. "But there's only so much hurt a man can take." He admits to Jeremy that life was a lot easier when he flipped his switch. Easier because people hate him, and he needs them to hate him. It hurts him to feel. They have to climb walls to get inside that.

People too often claim that Damon hasn't changed, he only does good when it's centered around Elena. Him trying to find Enzo in an effort to save him had nothing to do with Elena and everything to do with Enzo. Same thing with Bonnie in S6. As far as Damon knew, he could've let her die and Elena wouldn't have been the wiser. It's as if fans were expecting to see changes in broad strokes. It's not that simple for a character like Damon, his redemption was meant to be series-long. We're talking about a vampire that pretended to flip his switch and refused to let others see him feel. A vampire who couldn't trust anyone but himself, and therefore, relied solely on himself. A vampire who thought it easier to be hated than to endure the pain of loss, who'd create problems just to be a problem, and run from his problems rather than face them. A vampire who'd force Elena to become a vampire rather than let her die because he couldn't let go. Just because he still spirals doesn't mean he hasn't changed. His spirals make sense according to what truly causes them.
Damon had every reason to spiral when Katherine took over Elena's body. Enzo and Aaron and Damon's own guilt pushed it hard. Elena was the straw that broke the camel's back. Had she simply rejected him, he would've dealt with his loss at the bar. Because Katherine knows all of their weaknesses, she knew which button to push, and she pushed it. That's why he's in the middle of the road, killing Aaron just as she taught him to in 1864. It had nothing to do with Elena rejecting him, and everything to do with her making him feel like a monster while rejecting him. That's the power of Katherine knowing and proving that's how much power Elena has over Damon. And Elena only has that power over Damon because he gave it to her. It would be different if Elena wasn't the voice of his humanity, but she is. To have the voice of his humanity, the very person who made him feel human now make him feel like a monster? Yeah, expect that to make Damon spiral. His S5 spiral is centered around Lexi because Elena is written as both Stefan's and Damon's Lexi-like sponsor. That's why Damon is a ripper, and their Radioactive scene is epic. Damon could've sold the Ripper easily and still would've stolen the show.

@@LucidOnyxxx Thank you!! Stefan's comment to Damon in 1x5 is huge. He and Lexi chose to punish Damon. Elena chose to reeducate. That's why she's treating him like a human rather than an animal. Damon has a lot of parallels with Jeremy because they're a lot alike. Jeremy is often mean to Damon because he's taking after Damon lol.

Definitely Klaus, I mean he's an original vampire, and a hybrid, it's almost impossible to kill him. Also, he really doesn't give a damn when he kills people and other vampires so he's not really held back by his emotions in that way.
I would've liked to say Damon, but there are some things about him that set him back. Unlike Klaus, he can be killed quite easily, though he's still harder to kill than a lot of other vampires. Also, he has Elena holding him back from some things, when they're together he's conflicted about whether he should do these bad things or not because she may not forgive him. He also has Stefan trying to get him to do what's right a lot of the time.

+jonas12361321 : I hope you understand that the Augustine (the name derives from an actual French friar of XVIII century) is a metaphor for Auschwitz, and the revenge planned by Enzo and Damon is a Biblical curse. Vampires do not actually exist, but can easily become a symbol of everything scares our conscience. The idea that the vampires are victims of humans is upsetting, and scary. Well, Aaron personally did not torture Damon and Enzo, but he wears his grandfa watch, agrees that vampires are only monsters , and goes to the cell in order to kill Elena and Damon, who is not a saint but has good reasons to hate the Whitmore family. Damon accepts to spare Aaron for Elenas sake (what a bore), but after he is dumped by Bitcherine (thinking it is Elena) he decides on his own. And that is good, because he gains Enzo as a friend again.
