INSANE BEFORE AND AFTER! - Paint stripping and polishing a 50 year old Harley Shovelhead engine.

  • Hello everyone, today Jason is trying to make his Shovelhead engine look nice and shiny. Flat black paint was sprayed on the engine and paint flaking has taken place over the years. Using an assortment of cleaning tools Jason is able to strip off all the paint and starts to bring back the aluminum to its former glory. The final step in this crazy transformation is using polish to make aluminum have a mirror like reflection.

Looks great! Sure beats buying new boxes and cone. Saved a lot of money the areas on the back of the boxes will never be seen once mounted

Just a tip from one TH-cam’er to another and what I learned when I first started from some friends that are big. I was told viewers have the attention span of a gnat, try and keep the videos under ten minutes, viewers will pass right on by a video if they see it’s longer than ten minutes. I broke my back shortly after starting my channel and had to set it aside but wanted to pass on some helpful tips that were given to me from some big TH-camr friends. Otherwise love the content, found your channel from I believe Hippies garage.

Thanks for the tip. Its tough a new channel, I tend to overthink things and trying to find what viewers like. Hope the back is healed !

@@theabyssgarage thanks, the first surgery failed and I’ve got an appointment with a surgeon on Halloween morning for both that and my neck so hopefully both will be taken care of shortly and I can be back to 2 wheels and my 55 pan shovel shortly, rubber side down! 🤙🏽

It looks absolutely great I always wondered why guys didn't take the time to polish their engines. I see so many bikes with old crusty engines. I like Chrome I like polish aluminum I like to see Shiny Brite engines

Great video Jason! I am currently rebuilding my first shovelhead engine myself. I was wondering the most efficient way to remove all that old factory paint. Defiantly going to be giving your tips a try. Thank you!

Nice work! I like to use Simichrome for my aluminum polish. I was wondering what you used Never Dull, Mothers, Simichrome, etc.? I go over the aluminum lightly when I wash the bike and after a few times it takes on this kind of mirror patina that really stands out. I like the aluminum nose cone I think the chrome ones look cheap even when new that is just my personal view. You really made that one nice by stripping off the chrome. A crappy paint job fixed! You can really transform a motorcycle with a little elbow grease.

Thanks! I used Mothers mag and aluminum polish, I tried Never Dull on a test area with little success. I find that Never Dull or Blue magic metal polish cream is the go to choice when it comes to chrome. However for aluminum, Mothers aluminum polish is the best.

It was shot in 4k with the go pro but I didn’t realize that I movie downloaded for TH-cam at such a low resolution when selecting the TH-cam icon. Lessons were learned.

In another 15 minutes you could have pulled the rocker boxes, pushrods, cam cover & tappet blocks off & detailed them individually before reinstalling with new gaskets.
