Loved it! Wonderful. Thank you. Mendelssohn, I think, would be immensely surprised and happy to know his work is still being played in Leipzig with great expertise. The orchestra and Kurt Masur are simply the best.
I love the way the Allegro Vivace is slower than the presto with a less crisp 'weicher Energie und Klangfarbe' it's played with a totally different energy not just tempo. Every movement being a gem in itself is a testament to a great conductor that Masur was. Most people would just belt those two movements at the same speed but not him there is a heightening of tension and line throughout the piece. The German roten Faden, hurrah!
I've listened to many interpretations of this particular symphony and I always return to Masur's. More joy than the 'fury' of Neville Marriner or Chailly.
Wonderful! Mendelssohn wrote such damned delightful music. I can't listen to the first movement without smiling and thinking of the 1979 film "Breaking Away" (the wonderful scene where Dave the young cyclist is training, riding behind a truck on an Indiana highway). Fantastic combination of music and a film scene.
The Leipzig composers were the best of all time! They had the best musical fraternity with Bach, Mendelssohn, Wagner, Schumann R, Schumann C, and Mendelssohn F, Hummel, Schein and Breitkopf and Härtel the greatest musical press of all time. I think they were equally as strong as the first Viennese school. Mr Wieck Schumann, C's father too who taught her piano having worked it out himself. Respect. My ex too and her dad were part of it.
I'm so glad Herr Mendelssohn said, Hey, this Bach guy's music is pretty cool. I think everyone should hear it!" Except in German like, "Hey, die Musik von diesem Bach-Typen ist echt cool. Ich finde, jeder sollte sie hören!" or something like that. 🤣🤣🤣 Händel was spitting distance away. I've been to LE 2x but never managed to make it to either Händel's house in Halle or Mendelssohn's in LE. 🙄 Next time.
Thanks; this is great from Mendelssohn's hometown. Listening today - a sunny third day of spring in northern Italy. I like also Paavo Jarvi with Frankfurt Radio Symphonie (uploaded on TH-cam by hr-sinfonieorchester), at 31:38 min.

If you want to hear the actual beauty of the 2nd movement of this piece, (particularly the first 1/2 of that mvt). I suggest the recording conducted by Lorin Maazel.
For some commentators below the tempo is too fast, for others it is too slow. Masur's tempo is quite lively enough. Think rather of the marvellous music you are hearting.
Keep strong. Dont forget that despite the evil in this world, God is full of justice, mercy and love. Justice said we broke His perfect law - causing the world's previous perfection to be destroyed - and therefore we deserve Hell (like a punishment in any legal system but this is eternal as His perfect law is eternal too). Don't think you fit in that category? Ever done one of these?: lying, stealing - regardless of how small the object EVER, hating others - which is murder in God's perfect law, lusting (plus God sees our entire thought life). Justice says "the soul that sins shall die" - if we break one in thought/word/deed it's as if we're guilty of all of them. Quite simply, living by the law (which is doing everything perfectly) is impossible for sinful humans . The law shows us that 1. We will die in Hell if we fail to follow it and 2. We cannot save ourselves BUT, 3. God's perfect, immovable law points us to Christ, who followed and fulfilled the law in thought, word and deed perfectly in our place. He did what we couldn't and did it on our behalf. He was then sentenced to death on a cross, and took our personal punishment for our sin, paying our penalty (like paying our fine) completely FOR us, and has given us freedom. If we turn from the sins we have committed and repent (pursue the opposite direction of love through Christ) He will, overtime, recreate us into His image through The Holy Spirit which Jesus sends to all who accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior of their life. We cannot purify ourselves, but Christ lived that perfect sinless, pure life and then allotted it to our "account". That's where our righteousness comes from. Not from any good, works that you or I could do. It is not based on the amount of good works we do. God starts the changes, He carries it on, and He completes it in those who let Him. It's about letting Christ in to guide and teach you and obeying Him, again, through His power and instruction). He is our substitute in His life, death and resurrection. He essentially rewrote history in our place so that, if you believe in Him, it will be as if YOU had never sinned if you accept Christ's death as our own in our place. He is in Heaven right now preparing a place for us so that He can take His faithful, believing children home with Him when He returns. He will ressurrect us from death when He returns, giving mercy to those who accept His love, forgiveness, instruction and teachings in their life, and give justice to those who refuse it. He doesn't want ANY of us to go to Hell and die for continuing in evil and rejecting His way to life, thats why He died FOR us. Hes giving EVERYONE a chance, He wants everyone to take the free gift of salvation from Hell. He wants us to be His and begin to follow His life of love and service through His power and abiding (staying) with Him. So long as we keep our hearts near to Christ through His strength, strive to follow His will of perfect love revealed in the Bible, and let Him lead in the midst of (very certain) pitfalls and struggles, we will, in time, win the ultimate victory over sin, pain and DEATH through Christ. Even if you are willing to be made willing, pray for Jesus to come in and He will do what we can't. Give us The Holy Spirit who will guide us in the right way. NOTE: You are NEVER too sinful or messed up that God cannot turn your life around through Jesus. EVER If you have any questions let me know xx I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace. In the world you have tribulation and distress and suffering, but be courageous [be confident, be undaunted, be filled with joy]; I have overcome the world.” [My conquest is accomplished, My victory abiding.] John 16:33 - Amplified Bible
Sorry, but this is not an Italian Symphony. It's a German Symphony played so slowly. The first movement needs to be played with reckless virtuosity. The players should hardly have time to breath. Have you ever heard an Italian person speak? That is how fast the symphony needs to be played.
John-do a little research before commenting. It's not AN Italian symphony, it's THE Italian Symphony: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symphony_No._4_(Mendelssohn) and btw, it's played at exactly the tempo Mendelssohn intended it to be played.
I'm well aware of the metronome marking, but it doesn't alter the fact that an Italian would sing the opening to the words 'Italia Italia Io T'amo'. Could you imagine that he would sing it so slowly? I remember Brahms refusing to use metronome marks because, as he said, 'Do you think that I want my music to be played at the same speed every time?'
It's not called "Italian" because it's attempting to mimic some aspect of Italian culture. It's called "Italian" because it was inspired by Mendelssohn's visit to Italy and utilizes Italian dance rhythms in certain segments.
You might be right: we speak fast but French people speak even faster. I love the joy Masur puts conducting this music, it's also very accurate and transparent.

Flawless precision, GALACTIC PEAK TRANSIENT CONTROL IN THE ENGINEERING, this orchestra truly deserves its mega-million$

Great performance by the symphony Mendelsohn led himself. Gewandhaus is an amazing orchestra that survived communism in Leipzig, East Germany.

I get so many odd looks when asked about my favorites movies and I respond, "High Noon, Streets of Fire, and Breaking Away."
I always tell this to people. Made my kids watch the film several times. Also brilliantly uses the overture to Barber of Seville, as you know.

This music plays in my mind when I am off on long bicycle ride. It's been stuck inside my head since seeing "Breaking Away" in 1979.
wonderful.....
I think this is the first symphony that I actually enjoyed.
The end credits note: 1993, Euro Arts, Berlin.
The speed is very well chosen to match the light, southern character. Rushing through the first movement doesn't add anything to it, on the contrary!
André Uhres i am usually a big fan of Solti’s CSO recordings, but his was way too rush, and it made the beautiful Italian countryside sound chaotic
très bien !
Bravíssimo!
Mendelssohm's music has to be played fast yet steady. Kurt Musur gave a stellar performance better than Ricardo Chailly's
