  • Here in Durham I heard about a Family that have been cooking fish and chips for 115 years cooking the old fashioned way in beef dripping and a secret batter and wrapped in newspaper so I just had to go and check it out .

    Yes this is the real deal. I am 68 and I can just remember a fish and chips shop in Cemaes in Anglesey that was coal fired. I was fuelled up at the end just like this range.

    My family ran a chip shop jn a little village in Cornwall called Mevagissey, they used lard to fry in, this gives a sweeter lighter taste then beef dripping. I spent many a summer holidays in that cafe. Such a better time and place in the 70s-80s

    That looks great but nearly £13 for a bit of fish that small is ridiculous but very common now. Luckily i can still get large cod about 3-4 times the size of the bit of fish on this video, along with large chips, peas, a bread roll, scraps and jumbo sauasge in batter for just shy of £10. The fish chips and peas are £7.95, sausage is £1.50, bread roll 50p and scraps are free. It's nice anyway, but sometimes you get the cod loin and it is amazing! They use the beef dripping aswell. I always use that when cooking my own at home.
    But like with the place in this video, if the fish and chips are exceptional you don't mind paying a bit more for them.

    • @thedurhamvlogger
      @thedurhamvlogger  11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi JacknVictor thanks for your input its appreciated and yes prices have rocketed lately especially on the coast down at Whitby for a couple buying fish and chips with a drink each your talking close to £40 , you are lucky having a bargain chippy and yes the quality was there so I didn't really mind

    • @JacknVictor
      @JacknVictor 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      @@thedurhamvlogger yeah I am but I don't expect it to last. I reckon prices will go £10+ for half the size potion we get now soon. Most of the chippies around have already,I think this one is trying to hold out for as long as it can. What gets me is this all started around COVID when there were limited supplies so prices went up, but now there's an abundance, the chippies aren't putting the prices down because they are wise to the fact that people will pay those prices. Potatoes are a lot cheaper now than they were before COVID, and fish prices haven't gone up enough to substantiate and justify chip shops charging around a fiver before COVID to anywhere between around £10-£21+ after COVID as seen In a lot of chip shops nation wide. You used to be able to get a fish/chips/peas special with a small fish decent amount of chips and peas or curry etc for £3.50 at one of our local chip shops which was popular with school kids and local workers etc, plus it was an all day special so come tea time you could get it for £3.50 still. Since all these price rises, they don't do it as a special no more, they've changed its name to "large fish and chips" and the large they used to do is now called "XL fish and chips" and instead of them costing £3.50 and £5.50 respectively, they are now £9.95 and £14.95, and £1 extra if you want to sit in and eat. All these chip shops are going to price people out of being able to afford them, to the point chip shops will go the way pubs are going, and closing down in their hundreds. It's such a shame, when we was kids, you used to be able to go into a chippy, empty any change you had in your pocket, whether it be wtp or a couple of quid, and you could ask them for chips up to the value of whatever change you had and you would get it. If they start closing, future generations of kids will lose the experience on a bit of a crappy day, of going in to the chippy, getting an open portion of chips salt and vinegar n, and walking home in the cold with your mates and eating those hot delicious beauties. The memories I have with my mates and even with my dad who's no longer here anymore, just enjoying some chips on the way home or on holidays at the seaside. Now you need a mortgage payment to afford it.
      You used to be able to guarantee that no matter where you set foot in the British Isles, whether England Scotland Wales Northern Ireland and Ireland, North South East or West, you could get amazing chips from amazing chippies and not break the bank. It was an affordable meal for everyone. Now not only are the prices beyond poorer families but, although I'm not rich I have enough to retire on if I want to, and even I struggle with accepting that 2 medium potatoes that cost 15p each, cut into chips and fried, is worth paying £4.50 a bag for in a chip shop. The prices have gone up but the quality in a lot of them has gone right down. They do too many items on the menu to be excellent n the ones that mature. Quantity over quality. At least that fields looked like it offered quality. Loved the video you did aswell, no nonsense and you went back and said thank you afterwards. Manners cost nowt, and my dad would always do that, if we got chips to eat in the way out, he would always stick his head in the door on the way back and give them a thumbs up. Mind you, he would let them know if it wasn't up to scratch either!
      I'll stop writing now, if I put much more I'll have to release it as a paperback!

    • @thedurhamvlogger
      @thedurhamvlogger  11 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Hi jacknvictor yes its a sign of the times and its sad that something that was a staple for many could end up being priced out of many peoples reach and we will be left with Pubs offering inferior product , I like your dad and he was absolutely right manners cost nowt and I always tell them if I enjoyed the meal and likewise if I had concerns . Ps I sense you could be from Yorkshire if im wrong apologies .

    Way too heavy on the food colouring for the peas there. They're marrowfat peas that need to be steeped overnight. You usually add 2 tablets to add a bit more of the green colour, but seems like they added 10 in that one! Anyway lovely to see a traditional chippy still around.

    Thanks to Health & Safety, wrapping fish & chips in clean, unused newspaper was banned.
    Newspaper was plentiful and almost a waste product so often a whole broadsheet newspaper was used so your fish & chips were still hot when you got them home, and it was perfect for soaking up any excess fat from the fried food.
    Now we are no longer in Europe can we get back to using this ideal wrapping ???
