  • Charles Moore is the band director at Douglass High School. But what pours out of him immediately when asked about his job isn't music or classroom instruction. It's love for his students, especially those who have no father or father figure.
"There are some students who are willing and desire the love of a father," Moore says. "They want to be directed. They want somebody to challenge them, to encourage them, to speak life into them. They want somebody would say ... this is your destiny. Go this way. You can do it."
As he seeks to rebuild the Douglass band program to the successful level of its historic roots, his message to students is clear: He wants to be an important part of their lives. Band is simply the instrument that connects them.
