My wife was pregnant with our third child when the album came out. We had two boys and wanted a daughter. That line has always gone straight to my heart. We had a daughter and I try to show her beauty while she's young (the boys too).
This has been the lullaby i sing for my daughter since she was born. She is 3 now. My son knows the lyrics to most of AF's songs already. Thank you as always! Cannot wait until we can all rock out together at one of your shows!
This song meant a lot ot me as I embraced adulthood. Now, many years and a couple kids later, it's aged beautifully. Thanks for being a band that's less interested in being cool and more concerned with having a meaningful existence in a difficult world.
This song reminds me of the ending of It. Sad ending, you'll have to let go of the childhood you used to be and the familiar place where you grew up no longer feels familiar. But it is the reality we must accept. After all, "in my dreams we're still screaming." I love you, Arcade Fire. I completely forgot how timeless and good this song is. The Suburbs was my jam and still is.
i agree, this song has one of the best endings ive ever heard, it just keeps building and sounds like it could go on forever, the way some of us cling to childhood and dont want to let it go, the song doesnt want to let go either, and it really doesnt all the way up to when Ready to Start starts, if youre listening to the album, its such a great and memorable transition to me that they almost seem like Part 1 and Part 2 of the same song
The Suburbs is my favorite song of all time, words cant describe how i feel about this song. Always has me in tears. I can relate to it so much and i feel so nostalgic for a time that i'm still living in. Music really has an amazing effect on me, i appreciate it so much.
The melancholic feeling in this tune is very relatable as we transition into the last third of pretty dark and un-salvageable 2020. Thank god we have Win and Régine to provide some much needed comfort during these sordid times.
Jason How much of your life are you suppressing?? To cry is to feel alive, just as much as laughter, fear, joy.... this song is beautiful, I cry almost every time I hear it.
Merci Arcade fire pour tout, since 2003, beaucoup de moments ont accompagné vos chansons, j'espère vous voir un jour pour vous dire merci de vive voix.
I remember seeing the music video for this on the front page when it was first released. My love for his band has only grown since then, the chord sequence in this song could be looped in my head forever and I'd never grow old of it :) such a special sound.
When you're used to hearing the sophisticated final album version, its hard to imagine that the songs begin so subtle like this. Great to hear the rootsy origin of a song like this.
The American generation this song came out to is mostly grown up. Song hits a lot closer to home now as we move further into disenfranchisement with a nation that's largely letting us down. "meant nothing at all"
This song (and the album itself) reminds me of times when I was reading the book "Outsiders". I think that the story of the book fits the lyrics of many songs in so many ways. Here's a poem by Robert Frost that appears in the book and kinda suits the album too: "Nature's first green is gold Her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf's a flower; But only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief, So dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay." . Thank you for so many memories, Arcade Fire.
This song is the midpoint between hope and despair.
Beautifully said
For me hope🕴
Boredom?
You just explained why it's one of my favorites, never managed to put it into words!
Touche
Hard to believe this song is a decade old.
Where did all the time go?
The Guitologist its plder than me
Haha
Dope🕴
Time flies... So do we.
Wish i could go back to when things were simple and the world was a quieter place.
It's been many years... i still love this song, i still love this band. Merci, Arcade Fire, merci d'exister.
❤️ for the soundtrack from "her" - masterpiece

Great song, predominantly a shit band with some ok songs. This song is awesome.
"I want to hold her hand
and show her some beauty before this damage is done"
This line always makes me cry
OMG, same! When it says "I want a daughter while I'm still young.."
Amen,same here :)
saaaame here, trying to explain to my friends like a manic haha

Literally always?

You're a good father, mate!
Your son and daughter will forever thank you for introducing them to the beauty of great music!

Me too!
Why did u bring more stomachs to earth? Did you hear? She's dying.

In my dreams we’re still screaming, even 10 years later
I always adore that line. Beautiful..
James L Screaming more now.....

If i could have it back, all the time that we wasted, I'd only waste it again.
At 65 I think of that line a lot. And, I agree with it completely.
Reminds me of the lyrics on “All My Friends” from LCD Soundsystem. “I wouldn’t wanna trade one stupid decision for another five years of life.”
@@pedrojoaquim756 What a great line!
@@pedrojoaquim756 Just listened, what a great song.

this song is so special to me, had this playing while walking back to my university dorm during the sunset.
amazing
This song makes me so nostalgic, one of my favorites along with Sprawl II (mountains beyond mountains)
Yes! Two of their best tunes ever
Loving all this joy....
C, Am, E, G. Just the simplest chord progression in the world - even I can play it.
And yet it's so, so beautiful
Vocal melody is one of Arcade fire's strength
those are the gay chords, the real authentic ones are E, D, Bm, F#

You’re an adult, Jason. you should let people cry; it’s not my fault if you’re a macho with suppressed feelings

It means even more when you’ve “grown up” and now you have a daughter while the sky is covered in smoke, and you know the damage is done.
Absolutely Brilliant
