      I managed to handle Turn A's awkwardness (and liked it by the end), and Reconguista's seemingly completely different set of common sense than ours, but I couldn't take SD Gundam Force. Didn't even reach episode 10. Those CGI human things are ruining it for me. It's the only Gundam series I can't finish.
      On the other hand, I really enjoyed Brave Battle Warriors.

    You also see newer technology getting smaller in real life, for exactly the same reason why MS get smaller during the stagnation period. Modern computers have gone from taking up a whole room to fitting in your pocket in under a hundred years.

    • @secondsein7749
      @secondsein7749 4 ปีที่แล้ว +61

      Exactly. The funny thing is, while many argue that the size makes giant mecha unrealistic, it is actually the opposite if you want to take into account realistic tech into consideration, especially the power plant/engine. And what's funnier is that the smaller a mecha is, the more unrealistic it is because they'd use pseudo-magic power source that magically doesn't deal with byproducts such as heat.
      The power source issue is something that Tomino himself has considered and even then he has to take some leeway by making the nuclear reactor of MS the size of a fridge.
      Heck, people actually don't realize that Tomino uses the average size of fighter jets as standard for MS. The 18 meter average of MS? Yeah, real life fighter jet is around the same. We already have a giant weapon in use. Only reason why people don't see fighter jets being giant is because well, they move differently.

      @@secondsein7749, it's also a fact that jet fighters have a design limitation that became clear to see with aircraft design history, wingspan has limits (practical such as hangar sizes and airfields, physics because larger a bird is, more wingspan necessary in a ratio close to SquareCube law, and maneuverability depends on size and aerodynamic issues with size).
      A Bipedal mech is a monster that's unrealistic for mass military use even in space, they don't fit any role any other more dedicated platform or that a MBT or Jet aircraft doesn't fit already, they're maintenance and resource eaters (which makes for UC MS looks like even less practical as both Zeon and Earth Federation are reliant on WHATEVER they can get from asteroids and other sources in the solar system, so wasting so much of the minerals collected and refined in space for a subpar weapon system role wise), and even if Minorvsk particles made several weapons less than useful (Laser guided Missiles, Wireless drones, radar, laser pings...) In a MS infested battlefield, there's still quite enough ways to circumvent them (Wire guided ATGMs, it's a wire, so Minorvsk particles can't do anything, AT minefields on Ground, any MS losing a foot or leg in a ground battle is dead prey already...)

      Tomino was the one who made the call to shrink down MSs, but toy sales and spiting Bandai didn't have anything to do with it. It was because he thought making the mobile suits smaller would make scenes where both humans and mobile suits were in the same frame easier to storyboard. He actually intended for them to be _even smaller_ at 10 meters, before Bandai had him compromise at 15 meters.

      @Kiyosuki 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      It wouldn't have made any difference because by the time the Alex was even shipped off for testing, the war was basically all but over. At most Amuro would have been even better equipped for A Baoa Qu, but as far as the One Year War goes it wouldn't have really changed much as Zeon had all but lost by that point.
      However, it might have changed some key things in the long run. Namely, if Amuro had managed to actually kill Char (big hypothetical, as Zeong was no pushover machine either.) thanks to his better machine that would have obviously had crazy ramifications for future events. It might have had a plethora of effects on the events *inside* A Baoa Qu, like Village Idiot said. If the Alex wasn't wrecked by the end of the fight, Amuro might not even have had a reason to go inside. IF he still felt compelled to pursue Char though, then things could get interesting depending on if the Alex is relatively in one piece. If it is, the events are basically the same except Amuro flies out in a cool Gundam instead of whats left of it. If not though, the Alex lacks a core block system which well, might have spelled doom for him.
      Also, IF Char were killed or unable to continue inside A Baoa Qu, there'd be no one to save Sayla Mass. A lot of small little things could have happened, hell things might have gone exactly the same more or less, but as far as the One Year War goes it didn't really matter.

      True. The GM Custom in 0083 had specs that exceeded the RX-78-2 Gundam in every respect but armor (it had 80-90% of the armor protection of the Gundam), and the GM II technically had higher specs than it, marking the point where a mass-production mobile suit finally outclassed the Gundam AND was actually mass-produced instead of limited to aces and commanders.

    anothere possible explanation for the shirnking of suits in later UC could also be that by that point, beam weaponry has advanced and become common to the point that seemingly any direct hit to the torso of a suit is likely to cause terminal damage to a suit and pilot, and out-armouring the now common beam weaponry isn't really working anymore. So, suddenly you start to get an incentive to make suits that are smaller, lighter and more agile, harder targets to spot and hit

  • @Felix24148
    @Felix24148 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Your facts are good. But not fully accurate. Yes the GM Custom was a machine favored by the AEUG. But that was early on before they got significant backing. They initially had to rely on stolen, junk and surplus MS. The GM Custom at it's core was ruggedly durable. The GM Quel was not, as it cheapened the design by weakening the frame and decreasing the armor. Granted the GM Quel's torso and arm designs provided the foundation for the Movable Frame, and it's sensor system was kickass for it's time. But the GM II successfully mass produced nearly all of the best performance aspects of the previous models of GM from the OYW while using the original GM's base frame. The GM II was more adaptable than the GM Quel. It could operate in ground or space without the 10% parts differential previous MP GMs required. Which is why the GM II didn't get a lot of variants. Even the GM III has much more canon variants than the GM II. The GM Customs that continued to be used by the AEUG more than likely were put through next gen conversions. Parts from the GM II and even the Hizack could have been grafted in to give them improved sensors, generators, and cockpits. Which could have improved them enough to be better than GM IIs. But only until the release of the Nemo, which became their mainstay MP MS. Units favored by commanders were also at times just used to give or relay orders out in the field instead of fighting in front with the rest. Which was something that happened with the Zaku 1 occasionally during the OYW. The GM Custom was a great all around machine. But the GM Quel was primarily designed to operate in space and in the colonies. In the Katana Manga the Titans were shown using GM Kai painted in their colors because of this. The problems with the GM Quel were corrected too little too late, and they were decommissioned out of their association with the Titans instead of being converted into better machines. This led to them being purchased and upgraded by private security corporations like Themis, which gave them at least GM II level specs and panoramic 360 cockpits.

    Why is there a lack of a Brigadier rank in the EFF? Aside from the obvious reasons of being based on Imperial Japanese ranks, why in-universe wouldn't an all-Earth military have this rank especially since most countries have it?

    • @RedCometNurse
      @RedCometNurse 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      My guess is that, as the EFF primarily uses naval ranks, and the Navy technically only has three General Officer ranks (Rear Admiral is divided into two ranks), the EFF likely eliminated the Brigadier General to match.
      The real life reason is that in the Japanese military, there is no one-star rank in the JGSDF (they completely lack the NATO OF-6 rank). The ranks go from Colonel to Major General, skipping the Brigadier General altogether.

    Actually, it was during the events of Gundam Unicorn that the first generation of small mobile suits were being built and fielded in the form of the D-50C Loto. The Loto was the first mobile suit designed and built by the newly formed SNRI (formed in 0093).
    Also even after Unicorn, mobile suits were still getting bigger. during the Mafty incident in UC 0105 (Hathaway's flash), we have the Xi Gundam and Penelope Gundam which towers over everything else at 28m and 32.5m respectively, and being very bulky as well. But the bulkiness probably have something to do with the artist who also has a hand in drawing the mechs for the Zeorymer series which are comparably massive as well. And there is also the passing mention of the Mars Zeon forces in UC 0120 in Gundam F90 where they are using upsized variants of the Zaku, Dom, and Gelgoog.
    Basically the Mobile Suit Gundam universe is doing the same thing we are doing in the real world by miniaturizing technology by making them more powerful and smaller at the same time. it's just that trying to miniaturize something as large as a mobile suit takes years to perfect.

    Tomino also disliked the late 80s trend of increasing MS sizes; this was mostly pushed by Bandai to make engineering the models easier so he specifically insisted F91 and V use smaller MS in response. It was his latest "this is more realistic" kick.
    Once the bubble economy crash caught up with Bandai however, the decreased engineering budgets + decreased model sizes made for a recession of crappy kits well until the 2000s HGUC/MG lines.

  • @Rawsilver
    @Rawsilver หลายเดือนก่อน

    The GM II is basically an even more mass production GM Quel. Probably using newer parts to mimic the propulsion layout and general performance of the Quel. Which itself is a simplified version of the Custom. The Custom has way more maneuvering propulsion units all over it. The Quel seemingly strips them out or replaces them with more basic ones. Like the Custom shoulders have propulsion units facing in multiple directions. It's how Burning is able to pull off that sudden stop against the Gelgoog Marines. The Quel lacks those forward facing propulsion units and so would not be able to pull off the same move. So it would make sense for AEUG veterans to want to use it over a GM II. Especially since it seems they were able to give them beam rifles. Which was really the only thing holding them back from being outright superior.

  • @Prich319
    @Prich319 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'd imagine that the square cube law also exists in Gundam. A smaller mobile suit would have less volume, and thus less overall mass. With less mass to move, your actuators would enjoy a performance increase without having to increase the power of the actuators themselves, combine that with more powerful and compact reactors, and you get F91's smaller high performance MS that outclass the obsolete Jegan in every way.

  • @neonnwave1
    @neonnwave1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think the real reason is because technology advanced with time to the point they were able to find ways to make things smaller. We've seen this happen in real life; Cell phones, display monitors, PCs, game consoles, cars, radios, etc. The reason mobile suits got bigger was most likely due to newer technologies being introduced. As a result, in order to fit the new tech, they had to make the mobile suits bigger. It's a very similar scenario to cars. Cars were somewhat small due to limitations, then they got bigger in the 20th century when new tech was being installed, and now cars have so much tech yet aren't always big.

It's just that there were an extremely small amount of them made and production stopped due to each of the machines being extremely expensive due to each of them being as or more powerful than the Gundam. Beyond CCA and Unicorn, we see that the last true monsters of the "big suit" era were yet to come. There's still the massive Xi Gundam (26 m) and the Penelope (32 m) in UC 105, as well as big grunts like the Gustav Karl (22 m) and Messer (23 m). A lot of performance differences can be made up with tuning and balance, along with unmentioned numbers. For example, if the GM-II had an issue where aiming its gun to its lower left quadrant caused instability and loss of control because armor placement made it top-heavy, while the GM Custom lacked those armor plates, enemy tactics would recognize and exploit the design flaw. The GM-II technically had better overall performance and armor, but had exploitable holes in actual combat.

I would understand if it was preferred by "older" unit commanders or second line units over the GM Kai or GMs that they may be operating, but not in front line units. A few things.
    1. You can't always go by specs and hard numbers. Though it had a higher generator output, the GM-II was FAR less maneuverable than the GM Custom, as you note via it having inferior thrust.
    2. Tools and only as good as the person using them. GM Customs were assigned to and requested by veteran and ace pilots for a reason. GM-II were the cliche cannon fodder suits for a reason.
    3. The GM-II was generally seen as a failure by the military because it was essentially just a re-skinned RGM-79 GM with slight improvements.
    The custom is almost certainly a better mobile suit than the GM-II; however it was too expensive to justify production.

    To me the reason why they became smaller is because of these:
    1. Beam Weaponry became the norm, mobility became a higher priority rather than defense. Aside that smaller target means better chance of enemy locking in on you and if they did, hits could become nearly hits.
    2. Better technology, akin to Real Life, the technology allows having the same or better specs without being toi bulky.
    3. Lastly, efficiency. It is more efficient to produce something smaller. Less time and resources needed for a complete product without sacrificing the MS integirity and specs.

    I know this is video game trivia, but in the game Gihrens Ambition when you run the Gryps conflict as the AEUG the game starts you off with GM Customs, GM Cannon IIs and GM Sniper IIs (along with assorted other GMs), you start pre-development of the GM II. Once you produce the GM II you find that at a basic level its better than the Custom, but the Custom performs better with an ace inside. The GM II is also a fair bit cheaper to produce than the Custom making it more cost effective. I'd like to note the GM Cannon II is a superstar. Hizak compares favourably to the GM II and every GM is outmoded by the Nemo and Marasai. I find the universe reflects favourably on how the game depicts it.
    As for real world, commander unit vehicles tend to feature better communication suites, so its possible the GM Custom had better comms gear than a basic GM II. There could also be a lot of other soft facts that made the Custom a suitable unit for commanders that arent just raw performance such as battlefield endurance or having more accurate (if shorter range) sensors. You'll notice in Gundam that the highest performance units arent usually piloted by commanders and that commanders have other useful attributes outside of raw piloting skill.

    Not sure how to word it as a question, but I had the thought about that, by the end of Zeta, the Gundam Mk-II had become old enough that it needed expansion to keep up performance. Thus the G-Defensor. But by the start of the First Neo Zeon War and the assembly of the Gundam Team, the Argama never got a replacement for that component. Think the Mk-II did get to reuse the Flying Armor, and then there was the Mega Rider, but it otherwise would have seemed the weakest of the team. Thoughts?

    In Gundam Wing, the Leo was 16.2 meters tall and the Wing Zero was 16.7 meters tall.

    This is how I explain the GM Quel and custom to myself. GM ii is a basic refit of the GM after operation stardust where the federation lost a great deal of resources, Machines like the GM custom or Power GM were to expensive and complicated to mass produce for standard federation, so the Quel is used by the Titans who need top of the line and federation mostly uses GM ii, Titans at start of zeta are unchallenged and so over confidently have started Incorporating less powerful mobile suits like the GM ii, it’s backed up by no facts but it’s the way i think of it

    I think a big problem (though a clever one from an overall writing standpoint) the factions all had was making mobile suits more designed specifically for raw power. Zeon failed at many things in their overly prototyped designs. But, what they did excel at was showing how effective mobile suits are when designed for a specific role or specialty. If they made a massive mobile suit or mobile armor, that was not due to dick-waving or wanting to throw a bigger rock but because its purpose necessitated a large size. If they made a mobile suit for fighting other mobile suits, it always proved overwhelming in its capabilities. They didn't simply make a bigger mobile suit, slap a bigger gun on it, and pat themselves on the back.

    If I have give a reason for why the MS are getting smaller aside from economical and technological reason, it would be urban subjugation... especially the colony terrain subjugation. It would be far easier for a smaller MS to move between buildings, cut corners and and find a hiding spot between buildings should an urban subjugation is needed. This in particular would hold some amount of weight when we consider how Titans were more interested in colony harassment of spacenoids.

    Hmm. Unicorn and NT make it look more like the technologies already reached their peak but people decided to seal them away after witnessing all the feats from the Unicorns

    speaking of MS getting smaller as decades go by, same with cellphones, they were first massive unwieldy bricks which then became tiny pocket-sized then today we have smartphones which are flat as pancakes, lol.

      discounting NTD & funnel tech, the performance should be comparable.

    Question: What information do we have about the original purpose of the GP project. Also how did the GP02 MLRS fit in to it?

    • @MST545
      @MST545 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Yoshi thing that gets me is the reluctance to use said GPO2. Remember the mobile suit was developed after the Antarctic Treaty which banned nuclear weapons, chemical weapons and colony drops. It's the same with mobile suits that we're made with Mirage Colloid ability, their secret development had to become more secret

    I think I found this at the wiki so source is unsure rn but I heard that another reason why MS' got smaller was because to a beam rifle, it doesn't matter how tough your armor is, you get hit, you're probably dead. So they decided to go use smaller frames and less armor to allow greater maneuverability, but that unfortunately made physical weapons strong again, hence the Crossbone Vanguard's Shot Lancer and the machine cannon from the F91

      MS got smaller is not because of beam rifle tech, but a smaller and more powerful reactor. But the design philosophy is correct on the armor.

    I have a basic question. Why does the MS-06J Zaku II Ground Type exist? Since the original F type can be used in both the atmosphere and in space, and the F Type had the leg thrusters which were dropped by the J Type, returned for the G Type based on the development of the Gouf, why didn't Zeon just mass produce the F-Type more?

      00 units would win, no doubt. The units are just so damn strong in comparison to the Wing suits, it's kinda bonkers.

    Is ZAFT's Second Stage Series meant to be used the same way as the Earth Alliance's G Project, where all five ZAFT Gundams (Impulse, Saviour, Gaia, Chaos, and Abyss) operated around the Minerva much like the G Project Gundams did to the Archangel?

    GM Custom is also my favorite mobile suit from mobile suit Gundam Stardust memory. My favorite part is the GM Custom fought against the Gundam Zephyranthes.
