- After being diagnosed with breast cancer, going through chemotherapy, and then a double mastectomy with reconstruction, my views on beauty and my own self image were changed. For the better.
I hope hearing my story can help free you from some of the harsh things we tell ourselves day to day, and start to see beauty in a new light.
I’ve watched this several times because it’s so true. Being 61, watching the lines appear on my face, things on my body heading south, more jiggly bits than ever before you realize it’s a privilege just to be here. To wake up in this beautiful place. I feel grateful. Kindness. Such a simple word for such a life altering thing. I’m so sorry people have been unkind. And so happy it hasn’t dimmed your light .
My spouse was terminal at age 38. We were engaged 4 2 weeks
Given 3 days 2 live. He has had 21 cancer related surgeries, chemo, radiation to the brain. My mother did chemo next door in the hospital with the same doctor, same time, of the same disease
He is 75 this July 24th 2019

Oh Selena! You are so precious! I’m old enough to be your mom and I know this video is over 4 years old but it serendipitously came up on my phone and I felt compelled to watch it. Fast forward- watching you and Pete refurbish a seaside home and watching the lovely job you’ve done on your Victorian home- I’m so genuinely happy for you and this journey you’ve been on. Watching you with your parents, I sense you have a wonderful heart and certainly have your priorities in order. Being 65 now, into beauty as a retired hairdresser and decorative painter- I too have made a career of making things beautiful and putting a lot of weight on that. Fast forward, beauty fades even under the best of circumstances and truly being comfortable in your own skin and truly realizing what and who is important in your life is where you put your worth in. I still put on my make up every day but there’s a different women staring back at me in the mirror andI too have a sense of gratitude for what I do have as opposed to what I don’t. Life can be cruel and unfair sometimes but there’s always a silver lining a a major life lesson in even the toughest times. When you come out with that sense of gratitude then you’re ahead of the game. I’m so happy for your health. I share your passion for interior design and refurbishing beautiful old stuff because I can appreciate it. Appreciating beauty in the most simplest form is a true gift. I don’t even know if you’ll read this quite frankly because it’s such an old blog but know I’m sending you heartfelt love. Good energy is always received. It’s the law of the universe ❤.

You were never ugly. Your brave, sweet self managed to glow through it all, and sharing your story will help any woman who faces a cancer diagnosis. I am happy that you feel your experience has opened your eyes and taught you valuable lessons. Thank you for reminding us to be kind always and to love ourselves. Being a woman is so hard sometimes because we are so hard on ourselves. We want to have lovely homes, happy mates, well behaved children, fulfilling jobs, taut bodies, a well groomers appearance, terrific sex lives, exciting experiences, strong mental health and to do it all with grace and ease. It's a good thing we have each other to lean on now and then.

Hi Selena, I went through breast cancer, too, and I had the harsh chemo. I lost all of my hair on my body. I remember I was at work one morning and I was teaching preschool. I took off my winter hat before the kids got there and my coworker said, "Oh my God, Tina, your hair is coming back!" I remember quietly crying. I was so happy. And relieved.
Hi, we have a news anchor here where I live. She is a lovely young woman who survived breast cancer going thru chemo. She went back to anchor on air after losing her hair, no wig and I was so proud of her. I saw her recently for jury duty, turned around to congratulate her and thank her for her courage and conviction.

More spiritual is more natural! Thank you for sharing your testimony. I've almost died 3 times but God has a purpose in all of it. It has helped me realized who i am on the inner woman and my spiritual intimacy with my creator helps me grow. I've been a selfish brat most of my life but through these life challenges I've grown more mature. Your story is helping others and we so appreciate you putting yourself out there!

Since you are being so honest I feel like I can be honest too. I have had self loathing my whole life. I was never thin enough, tall enough, pretty enough or successful enough. I tried like crazy to be all those things. I became a runner to be the ideal weight and ruined my knees thru the years. I ran so much that it was a race to get away from the negativity. I finally reached a point in my life that I just didn't care anymore what the ideal woman was supposed to be. So I know that your words are right on point. I followed you thru your cancer battles and Selena? I really thought we were gonna lose you at one point. I prayed and prayed for God not to take you home. The thought of what your family would have had to endure was too much for me to think about. It is amazing to me what all you have struggled with and you have remained so positive and loving. I appreciate your kind words and I want you to know that they struck my heart like an arrow filled with truth. Thank you Selena, thank you kindly for your precious wisdom. Well I am not a breast cancer survivor, but my mom passed about two years ago from breast cancer, so I do understand somewhat where you are coming from. And I am 67 years old now. You know what, I feel like you do. I used to wear everything every hour of the day that I was awake. The eyeliner, false lashes. Hair was styled and long also. My family and friends also ribbed me about it. I always felt I had to do all that to be who I was, and to be liked and, I based everything I did and was, on how I looked and dressed. Everything had to be perfect or I would not leave my house. Now when I look back, just taking care of me was a lot of work and stress. I am glad I am more relaxed now. Still take good care of myself, but not so obsessed...lol. Life seems a bit easier now. Now I know that beauty is based on many other real things, not makeup. 🐣🌸🐞🐇🐝🌺👒🏵💐🌹💛🌻

I was diagnosed with cancer January 4, 2019. I was unable to have surgery until February 4.2019. Bad weather forced me to cancel surgery three times. I was a mess to say the least. Finding your videos was so helpful for me. You are a true beauty, inside and out. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me. Connie

I'm sure this was a tough vlog to make, but I'm glad you did.
After surviving a brain aneurysm in 2014 and being in a coma for 3 months after, I have periods when I'm down on myself. I'm almost nothing like I was. I'm not as physically strong. I'm not as energetic. I'm not graceful any more. This was one of my best attributes, in my opinion, and it's gone. I'm awkward now, sorta like being spun around too many times. It's a terrible feeling. I get so frustrated and angry. But I survived. So many people die each year from brain aneurysms it's unreal. I survived. I need to focus on that.

I had cancer and had chemo for 9 months Lost all of my hair on my body. I lost one breast and some lymph nodes . God gave us the power to heal ourselves. We are living our lives everyday and when we are sick we must think and act positively because it is vey healing and I’m still here very much alive. Thank you Selena. I was thinking just today, “I wonder if she realized when she started this how much enjoyment she would be giving to so many strangers”? I’ve struggled with obesity all my life, and my self worth has suffered as a result of the idea of feminine beauty and the rejection I experienced. Your spirit comes through in each of your videos. I feel like we’re friends (though I’m your mom’s age) simply because you share your experiences in such an honest and delightful way. My heart broke for you when I watched your struggle with cancer and the horrible sickness with chemo. I’ve had my share of heartbreak also over the years; but girl, we just keep doing what we love, keeping it simple and giggling at ourselves. 💕

Well said. You are beautiful inside and out. I used to feel so insecure about my body. I have 2 chronic illnesses. The type of Crohn’s disease I have causes me to actually gain weight. But I’ve reached a point where I have started counting my blessings. If I wake up and feel healthy and I have love and kindness inside, then it radiates through me. If you give love, you’ll get love. You are so special and lovely. And I’m so grateful for the day I clicked on one of your videos all those years ago. 💕💕💕

Why would anyone give you "thumbs down👎" ? There is inner beauty in everyone, you just have to find it. I think it took COURAGE for you to show us what it's like go through what you did on camera. Although I always felt like shaving my head because I'm sick of the up keep, I've never done it. We all have our inner self cutting us down, we don't need trolls or bullies doing it too. We should be bringing each other up.🤷♀️💖

This was a wonderful video and something important for women to think about! It may be too personal an issue, but I think it would be great to have your husband share his perspective on this whole subject and also the process he went through as you were going through it.
This year I will turn 54. I was always what others consider pretty; but due to illness, I am losing said prettiness. Thankfully, in my youth, I focused on my inner self, specifically developing 'pretty' QUALITIES. And so, no matter how skinny I am, no matter how quickly I lose my youthful looks, I know that I still have my inner beauty to proyect outwards. Thank you for this beautiful reflection that reinforces my point of view about physical beauty. God bless you!
You have been through SO MUCH Selena! What an amazing soul you are - and your beauty shines SO BRIGHT from within - back outward. You are spot on about not letting ourselves get caught up in our looks and beauty, (not only because of health issues - to which I have had many autoimmune issues over the years and I'm now 58 - but also from the aging process) because beauty does fade, but the light in our hearts can forever be beautiful - if we are happy, taking care of ourselves and have some kind of passion in our lives. I am very happy that your health is back again and I enjoy watching you and Laura and all the fun you are having together!! Come back to Montana some day 😊 - I live in Lewistown and we have a cool Antique store and several thrift stores for our smaller town. My husband and I live in, what was once a Motel - he remodeled it for us almost 40 years ago. I have guestrooms for you and Laura 🙂🙂!!

I haven't had Cancer, my Aunt has gone through Breast Cancer twice & us being separated by several states I felt helpless. She refused to go through having her breasts taken. And this April she will be 17 years Cancer free. She went through so much & is my hero. As are her.
I know how late I am to this video. I went through Stage IV colon cancer...lost my hair twice. I was called every name in the book by complete strangers. I decided to rock the Sinead O'Connor look during my treatment. Now I embrace my gray and don't give a crap what anyone else thinks. Big love from your neighbor (in Beaverton!).

I get mostly friendly, loving comments, but I have had some doozies too. My husband went through cancer and chemo and no hair. It changed my way of looking at things for sure. I just saw a beautiful young women who gave me great joy just watching her creative channel and her interactions with her husband and parents. Oh, and of course I love thrifting. Hi, I watched this video in the past and it just showed up today. I think this is something we need to see every once in a while. It makes me appreciate all of myself and even my faults because I have never experienced such a difficult life experience in 67 years of life.

I have a therapyst who I have been with since my car accident who has provided tools to live a purposeful clear and light existence. I now return the negative thoughts or vibes & intentions people transfer toward me back to them and not accept their hang ups and drama. I now refocus on “what else is possible” in this life.
Why waste a minute dwelling on those things I used to be concerned with. We are given
(if we are lucky) 89 years. How shall I live each day. And not look back in regret or concern over the past. Love God, love myself , love my family & love others. ❤❤❤
Well said! I am 50 and just celebrated 6 years breast cancer free. What you said is very much what I discovered during my cancer treatments and surgeries.
I've always said I would never wish cancer on anyone, but I do wish that everyone could experience what cancer teaches you if you let it.

I realized we are living on borrowed time and try to be kind and helpful. I have a daughter but is estranged and when I see you with your mom I wish we could have a relationship like y'all.
