Some companies employ what is called a loss leader pricing strategy. You might sell the fries and coffee cheap and probably even lose money on them.
However the idea is that you attract more customers who will hopefully buy other more profitable items.

I live 25 min away and she is right. Their food is great. It is not a supermarket that sells items that Convenience stores sell just more of it and a larger variety of each item. They are also known for their large clean bathrooms. Tons of stalls in the bathrooms. Also, most of the clothes and collectibles are made by small businesses. This one is close to San Antonio, Texas just about 30 minutes away. It is also in the heart of the tourist area where there is river rafting, boating, camping, and more and that is a lot of their business.

Buc-ees is in about 4 states now, they'll expand over time and one day take over the world. It is not a TRUCK stop, it's a passenger car stop. You can take your small trucks, but the 18-wheelers are not allowed. It's not an RV campsite either, and they do have full time security guards so you'd have to move your car every two or three hours, they do surveillance.

As a 5th Generation native Texan from So. TX, I not only have been to a Buccee's, that exact Buccee's was the first one I ever had been to back around 2017 and it's mammoth in size with everything conceivable inside. I was taking my teenage son & his skateboarder buddies from Corpus Christi to Austin to sk8 House Park & then stop at Pearsall Park in San Antonio otw back hm. We loaded up on food, gas, etc & I took pics of them group hugging Buccee beaver statue before we headed on. It was definitely a highlight on an already epic trip. That New Braunfels location is on the heavily trafficked IH35 corridor between San Antonio and Austin right in the middle of soooooo much to do. New Braunfels, Gruene, San Marcus, Wimberley, campgrounds & river outfitters, the Snake Farm, Natural Bridge Caverns & Wildlife Safari, Bracken Cave, Wonder Cave, etc are all in that area. You could spend a very long time trying to see everything in just that area. Part of the beautiful Texas Hill Country. If you're ever in Texas, chk out the hill country even if only a drive through & stop to eat in some iconic places. From the area near Uvalde/Concan & Leakey in thewestern part to the area around NW Austin, it's full of scenic drives & lots to do.
Btw...okra is the veggie you saw. Either you like it or you don't, but it's eaten fried, pickled, boiled, or in gumbo. I'll eat it in any way served & my dad used to grow it in the garden, so we ate a LOT of okra. A plate of real chicken fried steak smothered in thick gravy with a side of fried okra is just heavenly. Young, tender pods are best, or else it's tough & fibrous, but those are kept for the seeds. As always, I enjoyed your reaction & will put out the "welcome mat" to come visit my home state of Texas, if you ever get the chance.

Love Buccees! Hi from Houston! Yes, hard to find a gas pump some days unless you go to the second set of pumps further out. They do have things to fix vehicles, deer feed, bbqs, firewood. They have a made to order food counter, another section that does bbq, another doing fudge, an entire wall of drinks, milk, beer, etc. And lots of candy, snacks, and things prepackaged. But several open coolers with their in-house puddings, fruit, premade sandwiches, meat packages, yogurt with fruit, and everything in between. A children's section with clothes and toys. Kitchen goods, cookbooks, more.
Outside there are rows of car vaccums and a car wash and bug degreaser to clean bugs off the windshield. And yes, lots of ice so hunters and travelers can fill their ice chests and travel on! And yes, bathrooms are great. Truçkers can park on the side street and go in, but no semi parking or on their lots. There are hundreds of humans all over the place no truck would be able to move on the lot. You buy a mug and can do refills of any drink cheap.

The first key attraction to Bucees was actually the claim to always having clean restrooms. Some places over here can get pretty filthy. And those stalls are exceptions, not the norm. Even smaller Bucees will use the more normal stalls where the bottom of the door is higher, but you're not seeing kneecaps unless you get down on the floor which most people aren't gonna do in a public restroom.
The green looks like okra, but not sure how that's prepared to be more crispy. Normally okra is in a soup or vegetable mix or the main way I only eat it is chopped, breaded, and fried.
Bucees used to be just Texas, but is spreading everywhere, just like Whataburger(customize your order) and Shipley donuts(plain glazed, once you venture to other items there are better places, but nobody beats Shipley plain glazed donuts).

In the not-too-distant past, it was fairly common & easy for many truckers to use that type of lot for a quick - less than 6 hr. - snooze.
Truckers also had an unfairly bad rep for being sloppy/messy when using 'the facilities' - toilets - and the possibility/risk of THAT happening at Buc-ee's would severely DOWNGRADE their Sanitation Rating!
Many truckers have sleepover areas IN their trucks for convenience & nap at 'rest areas' designated for that exact purpose. Sometimes, parked on the road side, which in a few states is OK in order to prevent a sleepy trucker from running amok on the freeway as he/she dozes off as long as they are NOT on any part of the asphalt - Highway Patrol always checks on them for their, & the public's, safety'!

It's a gas station, sure. But it's also a quick service restaurant with a bakery, meat counter, ice cream parlor, confectionary, Wal-Mart & gas station all in one. Full walls of jerky. Full walls of chocolate, yogurt, covered candies, and more

15:53 I love going to Buc-ee's as a day trip in itself. I don't even necessarily get gas, but I ALWAYS come home with $100-200 of snacks and merch. 😄

So to answer a few questions: the gaps in most bathrooms are not at Buccees that’s why most road trippers make a stop at Buccees because they don’t have those normal bathroom stall gaps (seriously you can see people at the sinks while you’re doing your biz on the toilets it’s foul and evidently some American thing that lacks proper engineering to close the gaps)
The snacks are freaking amazing there is something for everyone and no you can’t leave without snacks it’s nearly impossible
Okra is a veggie most likely seen in the south in dishes (some out it in gumbo I personally like it chopped breaded and fried) but it’s like across between if a tomato and a bean had a baby - it’s an acquired taste and I think they got the dehydrated ones so they’re like crunchy snacks

I live about 1 hour from this Bucee’s and have been there a few times. You have to,realize Texas is mental in so many different ways from any other US state. She’s not lying about the food quality….this gas station convenience store is right between two of Texas’ major tourist attractions (San Antonio & Austin) joined by a major high speed interstate HWY I35. Also you questioned why 64 outside freezers just with bagged ice? Central Texas summers (4 months ) average 38-42 degrees centigrade and spring and fall seasons are close to those temps so ice is in demand all the time.

How much ice do you need? Gotta ice down those cold drinks! Hey, as a tip... If you are driving down the highway and get hungry, you can find some of the best little food places by the amount of semitrucks outside. Truckers and locals know where the best spots to eat are. Homeless people do live in their vehicles. People would just live at the Buc-ee's. The coffee may be discount, because he has bought a Buc-ee's mug.

Buc-ee’s is very specifically not a truck stop. That’s part of what makes it unique and nice but also, their huge parking lots are already full with light vehicles and traffic using the gas pumps. It would be a disaster to let 18-wheelers on premises, it just wouldn’t work. You’d have to make the property twice as big and have a separate fuel area for trucks - and that screws up the economics and requires more land than is probably feasible.

Okra is a vegetable, very popular in the South, though you can get it here in New England, I've grown it in my garden. Those look to be flash fried and seasoned, so like a crisp/chip but a whole piece of okra (vegetable).
Quail eggs are literally eggs from a quail. I actually keep quail for the eggs, they are small (it takes 4 to equal one large chicken egg) but they have a lot of yolk for the size and I love the taste. We eat them fried, boiled etc. And the shells are a gorgeous tan with chocolate colored splotches that look really lovely in decorative things ,like floral arrangements. I blow them (as in blow out the egg from inside with a pin hole) so you get the egg and the shell is in tact and they make pretty Christmas deco as well on a 'natural' style tree (like pine cones, moss etc.) I always keep some pickled in our fridge.

Buc-ees locations are in Texas, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky and South Carolina. As of March 2024 there are 48 Buc ees gas Stations in the U S in 7 States and Territories and 41 Cities. Texas has the most stations (37) which accounts for 77 percent of the total number of Buc ees. FYI.... Peace!!!

We have some of them in Tennessee as well. The Sevierville Buc-ee's currently ranks as the world's largest convenience store. Sprawling 74,000 square feet-bigger than a football field! and they are building bigger ones in Texas (75,000 sq ft) and Florida (80,000 sq ft).

The bathrooms are nice at Buc-ee’s, the food is cheaper because everything is made there and I can go to it and come out of it without food or drinks. I do love walking in there to see what they have new.

There are about 40 Buc-ees in TX and another dozen or so scattered across the South. 3 in FL and I think 3 in GA. IF it was a stand alone restaurant without gas, clothing, etc. etc. it would be considered a good restaurant. Most things are made fresh daily. I have been served fresh chips (crisps) nearly too hot to eat. 😁 The owner physically travels to different locations and personally checks the bathrooms for cleanliness and orders food so the makers keep on their toes. It is unique !

We finally got a Bucees near me in Florida. We made a special 30 minute ride last weekend. The bakery is my favorite but I love the BBQ sandwiches too. I spent the most in the bakery but also purchased a gift for a friend.
