And there’s the U.S. Air Force museum which is well worth a visit for those interested in aerospace history. And Tennessee is the home of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park - that’s enough to be worth a visit in itself even if being the home of Country/Bluegrass music, Elvis, etc and great food isn’t enough.
👍 When he comes to the US, we should all let him stay at our houses instead of a hotel or B&B. That way he'll save money. I don't have a huge house, but he's more than welcome at our place in NorCal. I'm Native American (Navajo) and some foreigners have seen more of America than I have. I am truly happy for them. One day I"ll get my chance to go there as well.
Growing up I got to see a lot just traveling between San Diego and NE Indiana to visit relatives many times. But I had the good fortune of getting to see and experience so much more as a Coast Guard spouse for over 20 years. Lived in places from the Great Lakes to the Gulf Coast, East Coast and back home on the West Coast. We drove to every new duty station and for most vacations. Our greatest road trip adventure of all came when we got stationed on Kodiak Island in Alaska. We drove from the Tampa Bay area of Florida all the way to Homer, Alaska where we then had to take a 13 hr ferry ride to reach the our final destination. We took our time and spent nearly a month getting there, tent camping 80% of the trip. It will forever be the road trip of a lifetime. I sincerely hope you find the opportunity to travel the country. Doing so by car is the ONLY way one can ever fully understand just how vast and diverse it really is. It's pretty amazing. Alaska was my favorite place by far. Fortunately, I still get to visit and always will because my oldest daughter, son in law and grandson live there. She married a local guy from Kodiak who happens to also be Alutiiq, Native Alaskan.
I believe that Sean said that Highway 101 ran from Southern California to North California, but that is a mistake. Highway 101 runs the full length of the west coast of the United States. It runs from San Diego, California, all the way to the tip of the Olympic peninsula in Washington state. I used to live right on Highway 101 in Oregon. It literally ran right past the front of my house! It's absolutely gorgeous the whole way! It is considered to be the most scenic drive in all of America!
He was driving California State Route 1 which starts in the north at a junction with US Highway 101 at Leggett in Mendocino County and follows the coast south to Dana Point in Orange County.
He was talking about highway 1. 101 was built to replace it and in much of Oregon, follows exactly the same route. in California, much of 101 is routed inland of highway 1, although, there are places where it runs alongside. when I was working in L.A, 101 was a 4 lane freeway it may have been widened, since.

The Pacific Coast Highway runs from Seattle all the way down the whole west coast to San Diego. It’s 1,650 miles long and takes multiple days to drive. I think many people would agree that it’s the most scenic drive in America
My wife and I have done the entire route a couple of times. But our favorite part is driving from Malibu to San Francisco, which we've done many times. It's pretty dang beautiful.

The thing about a trip to America (and not having a lot of time for it) is that you really have to decide specifically what kind of experience you want to have. The west coast is totally different from the east coast, the north is different from the south, etc. Big cities, small towns, national parks, mountains, lakes, deserts, oceans, just on and on.
EXCELLENT advice. The diversity (geographically, geologically and culturally) here in the U.S. is astounding and covers vast areas. Know what you want to see, what you want to experience before you get here. The travel time (by car) from one "experience" to another can literally take several days! A week! A month! If your visit is limited, time-wise, you don't want to waste a minute of it trying to decide what to do and where to go.
"What famous roadtrip drives would match this right here?" Oh, dozens of them. National Geographic published entire books showing you hundreds of scenic drives throughout the U.S. and they are all gorgeous, breathtaking, full of grandeur and astonishing beauty.
The Appalachian Trail and any drive through the Rocky Mountains are fantastic and a must see! Of course, Rte 66 is iconic and shows you a lot of the central U.S. 🤠
@@juliajohnston7145 the only thing about Route 66 is that the road has been broken apart in a couple of places so to do the full road, you have to take a connecting road to get back onto the original 66. However all the sites along the way are still there and people still tour route 66. It's recommended to buy a book or two on the subject for directions and to know beforehand which sites you want to see because if you stop off at every one you'll never get to the end. Also one might consider taking occasional departures from the road to visit various things in all the states it passes through but you're talking about a looong road trip and a lot of time to do all that.
Monterey is a peninsula about 2.5 hours south of San Francisco and well known for it's aquarium and the Cannery Row written about by John Steinbeck. Carmel and Pebble Beach are neighboring towns. Pebble Beach has a famous golf course that is considered legendary by golf fanatics. It costs a fortune to live in all three. But I've been there, it is beautiful.
Monterey is BEAUTIFUL California coastal town…Pebble Beach, Carmel, Santa Barbara, Montecito are like Heaven on earth bc so beautiful and perfect perfect weather!!!
Clint Eastwood lives in Carmel by the Sea. He once wanted to put up a picket fence, and the city wouldn't let him... so he ran for mayor and won. The mayor he ran against owned a t shirt business and was selling 'Make My Day' Clint for Mayor t-shirts. He knew he was going to lose, so he decided to at least make some money off of it.

I was playing golf at Monterrey Peninsula Golf Club a few years back, and Clint Eastwood and a friend came up to us on first tee. He was very friendly and a gentleman. We let him and his friend go ahead because we were a foursome.
I emigrated to the US 25-years ago (1999). By 2005, I had done 48 of the 50 states. All by road. My husband (an American) and I would think nothing of a 7,000 mile road trip for our summer vacation. This is truly a huge and beautiful country. There are many spectacular drives. It would be hard to pick a top three.
As someone who never went to California before last year. I think LA is the grimiest place I ever visited. But driving up this coastline, getting away from the city. Stopping to play in the tide pools and see the Pacific for the first time. Was one of the most fun times I've had in a while.
Yes L.A. is dirty. Hwy 1 takes so much concentration only the passenger sees the scenery. And yes we do have sea lions hanging out, seals too. He's in an amazing place where he starts, whales, all kinds of wild life to see. The Monterey Bay aquarium is a must see if in the area. And convertibles ARE awesome!
All those seals are elephant seals. Elephant seals got their name because adult males have large noses that resemble an elephant's trunk. Males begin developing this enlarged nose, or proboscis, at sexual maturity, which is at about three to five years old. Their proboscis is fully developed once the seal reaches around 7 to 9 years old

Why wouldn’t beach animals be on the beach? 😂 And they can bite so do not approach! Their saliva can cause serious infections to humans and pets.
Oh, no! Dude shortchanged my hometown of Santa Barbara!! Lewis, when you drive down Highway 1, make sure you stop off in Santa Barbara. Have some of the freshest seafood in the world. Also, that bit with the cold fog on the coast - that's the marine layer. A low-lying band of moisture that clings to the coastline. Go inland a bit and it won't reach. I live near the beach, so I'm often in the marine layer. Also, we have a harbor seal rookery down the coast a bit. Come see them in the springtime, and they'll have pups. So cute!
I agree, for the drive from Monterey to LA, you need a good 4 days to stop and enjoy everything properly. You can do the drive all in one day, " and I have", but it is brutal.
@@user-xd1ze4jf6e When I was a kid in the 60's we would drive from SF to Hollywood to visit my dad's aunt on a regular basis - almost always on PCH. We would always make a side trip to Solvang for Anderson's split pea soup. I loathed it then, and love it now! My mom had a friend who would get us free passes to Disneyland. My mom would drop my brother and sister and I off before opening and pick us up at the end of the day - heaven. My aunt had a huge avocado tree in her back yard and my brother would climb up and pick tons of avocados for us to eat and take home. I miss those days.
One of the even more famous road trips, which is stunning itself, is going from one end of Rt 66 to the other (Los Angeles to Chicago). It is a 2400 mile trip!
In SF at Fisherman Whorf, Sea lions used to take over the docks. So they built them their own dock area to lounge around on all day. It's a busy tourist spot.
The highway he's driving is also known as the "PCH" or "Pacific Coast Highway". There are a few small breaks of it, but it stretches all the way South to San Diego. The drive is an absolute must if you ever have the time and opportunity. Especially from where he is in the Carmel/Montery area down to Santa Barbera, just north of LA. As pretty as it is here, video simply doesn't do it justice, it's so much more beautiful in person.
And you can keep going north on it from there all the way to Washington. I haven't been on it in Washington, but it's a pretty spectacular drive in Oregon too.
I have done this drive so many times, and i would do it 100 times more if i could. It is spectacular in pictures and movies but it is beyond any of that when you are there. The power and beauty of nature surrounds you. It is unique to itself and is beauty is like our national parks.
As an American, yes, it's normal to surf here. The best surfing waters are in California. The elephant seals are actually kind, but most just stay clear from them. Nice houses in LA, but it takes hours to get anywhere. Love your reactions🥰
Sorry to burst your bubble, but went to high school in S. California and moved to Hawaii at 18....California doesn't even come close!!!! We have at least 4 of the best surfing spots in the world, which is why we have so many world champion surfers.

I drove this with my dad when I graduated high school. We both were born and raised in California and we still got to see and do things we had never had time to do before. Its pretty amazing. And I got to go to that castle he talks about. Hearst Castle is petty dope experience.
If 4 hours is a long drive dont bother visiting the U.S. because it takes longer than 4 hours+ to get from border to border in a state let alone between states. from New York to LA is a solid 65 hours of straight driving, only stopping for gas and no breaks. In Texas (I believe) you can drive 12 hours+ straight and still be in Texas. LOL
Pebble Beach is a town, but also a famous Golf Tournament that is held in the Pebble Beach Resort, which is also a Community. Also, Carmel, CA is one of the richest communities in California, BECAUSE OF PEBBLE BEACH. Carmel was also famous because back in the 90s Clint Eastwood was their Mayor.
'pebble beach' is just because some beaches don't have sand, but instead they have small stones (pebbles) or large stone and are very rocky (usually very close to cliffs and the rocks fall off the cliff. Although, the specific 'pebble beach' he's at is actually a sand beach and it's just named that...
Lewis, I don't think you realize why they're called "Elephant Seals". Full grown males are up to 15 feet long [5 meters] and can weigh as much as 7,000 pounds [3,000kg]. Even if they don't bite you, they can quite literally CRUSH you.

Road trips in the USA and Canada can go on for days and days! We once drove 2500 miles, one way, then back again 2 days later. All in Canada. It was to go see Queen in concert in 1981 in Montreal. I had to be there!
My husband and I once drove from Miami to Portland Oregon on a job relocation trip. Long trip (2600 miles) but one of the highlights of our lives! We took 3 weeks!
Yes most newer cars heated seats or air-conditioned seats. My car has them both. I love them.. they are def a luxury i wouldn't want to change lol the whole seat gets hot or cold. The heated seats helps if you back is sore lol
10:36 My high school had Surf PE, so if we didn't want to run laps and that kind of thing you could sign up to go to the beach and surf. When I was a kid we would go on YMCA trips one of the ones that I did several times was to Big Sur for surf camp, I was absolutely not a surfer, I sucked, so I boogie boarded but it was a lot of fun and it was near where they're at they're in Big Sur. I was much much closer to Torrey pines and La Jolla those are probably places that you might have heard of.
One of the nicest drives you can make. I did a multi day road trip where I drove from Vancouver Canada to LA through Washington, Oregon and California. I'm part of a car club, so driving is our thing. The sights and stops with the food and wine options are second to none in the entire world.
As a former Native Californian, the physical and geographical beauty of the state is fantastic. Even as locals, we appreciate the beauty for sure. Also, I have a 2015 GMC Yukon and I have seat warmer and air conditioning as does the passenger and the rear seats I didn’t know it was uncommon for newer vehicles.
He drove thru my town on his way to SF according to his info. I’m a native Northern Californian and will never leave. I work In Napa Valley. That highway is a beauty for sure. My older brother used to surf in Southern California back in the 1960’s. I went to the beach a lot but never surfed to speak of. Yes there are crazy people who would go down there into a herd of wild elephant seals or a herd of American Bison (buffalo) and wond why it attacked them when they pet them. 😂 San Luis Obispo; my great grandparents were married at the Spanish mission there in 1860.
I was born & raised in CA & we lived in north, south & middle CA while I was growing up. I left the state for NC when I married (beautiful state). Moved around the U.S. & finally back to care for my elderly mother in CA. In all that time, I was never aware CA had "wilderness areas", nor that I'd lived close to any of them & I still do. The inland areas this man showed while driving from Monterey down to Santa Barbara & beyond, are designated wilderness areas. CA has 149 wilderness areas covering over 15 million acres. Wish he'd started a bit north & shown the Redwoods & Giant Sequoias. Giant trees! One they've cut a car tunnel through the base of the tree so you can drive through.
Elephant Seals are big. Remember Neil the Seal? His debut was when he was a baby. They are heavy (a couple tonnes full grown) and dangerous if provoked. They can bite and can body slam you and you will lose.
In San Louis Obispo there is a beach called Moonstone Beach. And instead of sand it is covered with semi precious stones. Jadeite, quartz , amethyst, sandstone. It's amazing, and beautiful.
It’s because they drove past it at night settling in at San Louis Obispo. That’s quite a little drive back north to see it. They should have stayed in Cambria just outside of San Simeon . Very charming little village. I guess you can’t see everything. That tour takes forever anyway
This part of California has a climate simular to the South of France. There is a road that runs behind the Bixby Creek bridge, taking out through a local lovely forest. Ten miles of the road takes you back out onto Highway 1, where they are traveling.
Dreaming about visiting the US but hate driving? As a Finn I've only been to 43 states but the most I've driven without rest is 2000 miles. Very pleasant in a Cadillac or Lincoln. I'd stay away from a Mustang but a Dodge Challenger would be OK.
Was not sure if this was a general comment or addressed to me. O am an American but have not traveled much. Been to Louisians, Mississippi, Missouri, Oregon, Texas, Alaska twice, Vermont, NYC, but have lived in and loved California now for decades.
The Scottish Thistle is the flower of Scotland. Do Not step on them without shoes on. Apparently, some invaders stepped on them, and their silent invasion was no more. We have them here in Utah, too. They are pretty, but you really don't want them in your lawn.
We have them in Michigan too lol. The horse farm I boarded at had a giant thistle growing right next to the fence of the outdoor arena. Watched a horse run his rider into it, rider was not happy lol.🇺🇸
BTW, you can't do this drive right now. There's a big slide south of Big Sur that happened last year and reconstruction is still not completed. To the north of Big Sur, there's a slipout, part of the road collapsed into the sea. They are caravaning people in at the moment. The only people allowed in are residents, however, they are working on a one way traffic light that will hopefully be up sometime this summer.
My husband had a 25th Anniversary Mustang GT 5.0 convertible when we met. The biggest problem is when the top starts to have issues, you have ISSUES. Leaks, air getting underneath, tears. Replacing them are $$$ and you can only hope they installed it right, or you'll have the same problems. I refuse to buy another convertible. But to rent on vacation? Sure. Go for it!
@@gioiapharo7433 The last top I replaced on a car, within a couple days some asshole decided to shred it with a knife. Had that happen more than once. I put a new top on a 72 Cutlass I had on my car lot. Next day when I came into the lot the top was shredded.
Driving from Minnesota to Virginia in May to spend a few days with my youngest daughter. It's going to take 20 hrs which we will split into 2 days. Can't wait! Love road trips
I've lived all over Cali, including Monterey, which is beautiful. The tide pools in Pacific Grove are amazing! You can walk around at low tide and see all sorts of marine life up close. Also, if you're really quiet, you can watch the deer just hanging out in the neighborhood just up from the beach. It really is a magical place.
Monterey, Carmel and Big Sur are some of the most scenic and beautiful drives in My home state and maybe the whole US as well. Used to drive it often to visit my daughter who was in military training in Monterey. Miss it terrribly!

The Blue Ridge Parkway is another classic American drive, 470 miles up the spine of the Appalachians. The Mohawk River Valley across upstate New York is beautiful and just the right size for a day trip.

This drive is one of the most famous in America. California 1 is also known as the PCH, Pacific Coast highway. Other comparable drives would be Miami to Key West, Going to the Sun Road through Glacier National Park in Montana.

Epic drive! I'm so glad this couple is getting the full experience of the California coast, starting with the redwoods, all the way down to the sandy beaches of the south. California protects its wildlife habitats, you'll encounter roadside elk up north, deer-- everywhere, and sea life! He really didn't do Santa Barbara any justice, it's stunning Spanish influence is just the tip of the Southern California experience. And food to die for!
Carmel is a town on the coast south of San Francisco. Clint Eastwood (the actor) used to be the Mayor for a while. It's very upscale. Monterey nearby is a little less high toned but only a little. It was once the Spanish capital of Alta California. Listen to the old Kingston Trio song, "The South Coast (The wild Coast)" to get into the mood. It's illegal to harass the seal colonies on California beaches. Don't "go down there"!
Made that drive many times…very beautiful! Monterey Bay Aquarium is fantastic too. The farther south you go, the warmer it is…all beautiful! When I was dating, made that trip in a 67’ corvette, with the top off…married the guy, 45+ yrs now😊. We still live near the Southern California coast!
I am 62 and know I will never see all the beauty the U S has to offer. It would take several lifetimes. Just deeply grateful for what I have seen. Hell. I've gotten lost on detours in my own state both alone and with friends and been totally shocked.
That's so very true, as I've sen only a small fraction of the U.S. But my line of work wasn't the most conducive for sightseeing. I worked the carnival circuit, and you don't see as much as some might believe.
That is the best drive I have ever done in in the USA. I have done it 4 times so far. It is even prettier to me than the drive around the Island of Oahu in Hawaii. The road can be foggy, or the rare times it is raining, that drive can be a lot more dangerous, due to being in the middle of the fog and clouds.
Pebble Beach is a famous golf course. Also, California is 800 miles north to south. It's not a one day trip. From NYC to LA it's 4490 km. Route 66 is 2248 miles. You need at least a month to travel cross country east to west, if you want to see anything along the way. One that I always keep in mind is how dark it is at night once you get away from the big cities. We drove 300 miles in Wyoming at night once without any moonlight and we couldn't see the other side of the highway at all.
California will have the hottest temperatures and the coldest temperatures in the entire country. Death Valley holds the record high temperature in the world and 10-20 km to the west there are glaciers. California is very special.
Hwy 1 is one of the most beautiful drives in the world. It's up there with Australia's Great Ocean Road, the Hana Hwy in Maui, the Amalfi Coast in Italy.... When you go, stop at Nepenthe for. A meal and astounding views and the laid back vibe. I've been blessed to travel many places in my life, but the Monterey Peninsula and the drive down the coast is still my favorite place on earth . The scenery is stunning, there are impressive forests of Redwood trees, and the air is so fresh and exilarating. Plan on a slow day. Take time to ho slowly, stopping to take pics and see the view.
Probably the most famous U.S. road trip is old Route 66 that left from Illinois (I believe), went through middle America and heads southwest and ended up in Cali, I believe (or very close). You can see so much but it’s just not labeled Hwy 66 anymore. I’d love THAT road trip myself. The PCH is a freaking dream. ❤️
They really need to drive through The Midwest! Cali is beautiful, but…my friend from the Oakland, Alameda/ San Francisco region visited Wisconsin. He was amazed just how beautiful Wisconsin! I really hope when you come visit us here in the US you visit Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and Illinois! 👍
Just get off the interstate highways to tbe back roads along Iowa's west and east coasts, Loess Hilks along the Missouri River and Davenport north along the Mississippi River, Galena Illinois, Elkader, Spillville, Decorah, Lansing iowa, Along the Root River tiw mb s like Preatin, Lanesboro, Minnesota, La Crosse and The Dells in Wisconsin
That elephant seal colony is awesome. It is illegal to get within 1000 feet of them. First they can by aggressive - but mostly passive. The babies are adorable !
We are from south east Texas. My husband started surfing when he was 6 years old. The older guys watched over him. Then when he was 17, he joined the navy. He took his surf board with him and surfed the world. Then much later he would go on surfing trips with his buddies. One time they went to Costa Rica and surfed in the Masters class(older guys). One of his friends and in first, and my husband came in third. We are talking world class. They made it into several surfing magazines. He finally had to stop due to health reasons.
He's starting south of San Francisco, which is 2/3 of the way up the California section of the coast, so only about 20% of the whole west coast! Carmel by the Sea is a VERY ritzy neighborhood and only millionaires can afford to live there. The bridge has been used in LOTS of ads. Surfing is done all along the coasts of the US, east & west, but the west coast waves are bigger, the ones in Hawaii are 'not to be believed' huge!! We're used to driving, so we think nothing of going for hours. . . I drove, by myself, to our daughter's house in Dayton ( from MD ), 10 hours. No big deal. You don't go near the seals; the bulls will attack you and they are protected by law, so, if caught, you'd be fined. It's not all females on the beach. The male seals are in there with their 'harems'. The males are twice as big as the females. There are probably dozens of 'family' groups on that beach.
Brad Pitt bought a home here a couple of years ago. Lots of celebrities have homes tucked away, nestled in the cliffs or in exclusive areas. Betty white and Alan Funt. Doris Day, Kim Novak, Beach Boys, Tom Petty, Ted Turner, just to name a few. Oh, Bing Crosby, of course. And Bob Hope lived at "Wits End". 🤣
Surfing is a very normal thing here.( I live Galveston Texas gulf coast) my son and daughter in law had a beach wedding and she surfed in her wedding dress.Absolutely stunning wedding.❤ We have quite a few world class surfers living in this area. 🏄♂️
I live in Monterey, Pebble Beach is a private "city" quietly on the shore between Monterey and Carmel. Wooded area full of some of the richest people in the world. Also has exclusive golf courses.
In La Jolla, CA which is right outside of San Diego there's a beach where a whole bunch of seals lay out on the sand and swim in the water and you can go down to the beach and get in the water with them. There have been times where people threw rocks at them and local authorities closed the beach to protect the seals. For the most part, the people and seals coexist peacefully there. You just aren't allowed to touch them.
I grew up in Carmel 1959-1971. We lived in Carmel for a time and also Carmel Valley. I went to 8th grade in Pebble Beach at a private school before we moved north to the SF Bay area (east bay area). That drive from Pebble Beach to Big Sur is in my opinion the best part of California. I wish Shaun would have spent more time in Carmel (in the city center). It's very unique. Carmel Mission, Hearst Castle and too many others to name. I wish I could go back in time because I took the beauty for granted when I was just a kid.
Highway 101 from northern cali to the Canadian border is all so much more gorgeous. People visiting really really miss out only going to the main tourist sites and states.
101 down from northern Oregon to the California border is nothing to sneeze at either, except for a brief dull section along the dunes. I'm headed down to the redwoods next week along that route.
@@elkins4406 I edited my comment, I meant to say norther California to the Canada border. I'm from Idaho and try to make that drive once a year or every other year, it's all so gorgeous. Popping off to some of the side towns is great too, less tourists and more locals. I enjoy talking to locals to find out things they think are cool, and that they do that may not be attainable through the Internet lol
If planing a trip down Hgwy 1 in spring or early summer, check for possible road closures around Big Sur. Winter storms often cause serious road damages. Right nos [04/28] it is closed to nonresident with limited one way access twice a day!😮
What could match that view you asked well The Million Dollar Highway, also known as U.S. Route 550 is a 25-mile stretch of highway that runs from Ouray to Silverton in southwestern Colorado. You have to react to the Million dollar highway. Also, Sedona Arizona it's beautiful.

And there’s the U.S. Air Force museum which is well worth a visit for those interested in aerospace history.
And Tennessee is the home of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park - that’s enough to be worth a visit in itself even if being the home of Country/Bluegrass music, Elvis, etc and great food isn’t enough.

Growing up I got to see a lot just traveling between San Diego and NE Indiana to visit relatives many times. But I had the good fortune of getting to see and experience so much more as a Coast Guard spouse for over 20 years. Lived in places from the Great Lakes to the Gulf Coast, East Coast and back home on the West Coast. We drove to every new duty station and for most vacations. Our greatest road trip adventure of all came when we got stationed on Kodiak Island in Alaska. We drove from the Tampa Bay area of Florida all the way to Homer, Alaska where we then had to take a 13 hr ferry ride to reach the our final destination. We took our time and spent nearly a month getting there, tent camping 80% of the trip. It will forever be the road trip of a lifetime.
I sincerely hope you find the opportunity to travel the country. Doing so by car is the ONLY way one can ever fully understand just how vast and diverse it really is. It's pretty amazing.
Alaska was my favorite place by far. Fortunately, I still get to visit and always will because my oldest daughter, son in law and grandson live there. She married a local guy from Kodiak who happens to also be Alutiiq, Native Alaskan.
America is built for road trips.
They were at Hearst San Simeon beach and failed to look away from the beach and up the hill to see Hearst Castle.
I believe that Sean said that Highway 101 ran from Southern California to North California, but that is a mistake. Highway 101 runs the full length of the west coast of the United States. It runs from San Diego, California, all the way to the tip of the Olympic peninsula in Washington state. I used to live right on Highway 101 in Oregon. It literally ran right past the front of my house! It's absolutely gorgeous the whole way! It is considered to be the most scenic drive in all of America!
He was driving California State Route 1 which starts in the north at a junction with US Highway 101 at Leggett in Mendocino County and follows the coast south to Dana Point in Orange County.
He was talking about highway 1. 101 was built to replace it and in much of Oregon, follows exactly the same route. in California, much of 101 is routed inland of highway 1, although, there are places where it runs alongside. when I was working in L.A, 101 was a 4 lane freeway it may have been widened, since.

The Pacific Coast Highway runs from Seattle all the way down the whole west coast to San Diego. It’s 1,650 miles long and takes multiple days to drive. I think many people would agree that it’s the most scenic drive in America
My wife and I have done the entire route a couple of times. But our favorite part is driving from Malibu to San Francisco, which we've done many times. It's pretty dang beautiful.

The thing about a trip to America (and not having a lot of time for it) is that you really have to decide specifically what kind of experience you want to have. The west coast is totally different from the east coast, the north is different from the south, etc. Big cities, small towns, national parks, mountains, lakes, deserts, oceans, just on and on.
Heck. You can have major differences in topography and lifestyle within one state and not just in CA.
EXCELLENT advice. The diversity (geographically, geologically and culturally) here in the U.S. is astounding and covers vast areas. Know what you want to see, what you want to experience before you get here. The travel time (by car) from one "experience" to another can literally take several days! A week! A month! If your visit is limited, time-wise, you don't want to waste a minute of it trying to decide what to do and where to go.

The Appalachian Trail and any drive through the Rocky Mountains are fantastic and a must see! Of course, Rte 66 is iconic and shows you a lot of the central U.S. 🤠
@@juliajohnston7145 the only thing about Route 66 is that the road has been broken apart in a couple of places so to do the full road, you have to take a connecting road to get back onto the original 66. However all the sites along the way are still there and people still tour route 66. It's recommended to buy a book or two on the subject for directions and to know beforehand which sites you want to see because if you stop off at every one you'll never get to the end. Also one might consider taking occasional departures from the road to visit various things in all the states it passes through but you're talking about a looong road trip and a lot of time to do all that.
Monterey is a peninsula about 2.5 hours south of San Francisco and well known for it's aquarium and the Cannery Row written about by John Steinbeck. Carmel and Pebble Beach are neighboring towns. Pebble Beach has a famous golf course that is considered legendary by golf fanatics. It costs a fortune to live in all three. But I've been there, it is beautiful.
Monterey is BEAUTIFUL California coastal town…Pebble Beach, Carmel, Santa Barbara, Montecito are like Heaven on earth bc so beautiful and perfect perfect weather!!!

Driving from Hall county, GA to Broken Bow, Oklahoma is only a 13 hr drive when visiting family out there.
Clint Eastwood lives in Carmel by the Sea. He once wanted to put up a picket fence, and the city wouldn't let him... so he ran for mayor and won. The mayor he ran against owned a t shirt business and was selling 'Make My Day' Clint for Mayor t-shirts. He knew he was going to lose, so he decided to at least make some money off of it.
The story I heard at the time was something about a law fining you for dropping your ice cream cone on the sidewalk. He seized on the major issues! We all wondered if he would go on to Governor but I guess he figured enough actors already.

I was playing golf at Monterrey Peninsula Golf Club a few years back, and Clint Eastwood and a friend came up to us on first tee. He was very friendly and a gentleman. We let him and his friend go ahead because we were a foursome.

I emigrated to the US 25-years ago (1999). By 2005, I had done 48 of the 50 states. All by road. My husband (an American) and I would think nothing of a 7,000 mile road trip for our summer vacation. This is truly a huge and beautiful country. There are many spectacular drives. It would be hard to pick a top three.

As someone who never went to California before last year. I think LA is the grimiest place I ever visited. But driving up this coastline, getting away from the city. Stopping to play in the tide pools and see the Pacific for the first time. Was one of the most fun times I've had in a while.
Yes L.A. is dirty. Hwy 1 takes so much concentration only the passenger sees the scenery. And yes we do have sea lions hanging out, seals too. He's in an amazing place where he starts, whales, all kinds of wild life to see. The Monterey Bay aquarium is a must see if in the area. And convertibles ARE awesome!
I have driven through LA twice, both times at night, and never left I-5. I have no interest in LA.
All those seals are elephant seals. Elephant seals got their name because adult males have large noses that resemble an elephant's trunk. Males begin developing this enlarged nose, or proboscis, at sexual maturity, which is at about three to five years old. Their proboscis is fully developed once the seal reaches around 7 to 9 years old

Oh, no! Dude shortchanged my hometown of Santa Barbara!! Lewis, when you drive down Highway 1, make sure you stop off in Santa Barbara. Have some of the freshest seafood in the world. Also, that bit with the cold fog on the coast - that's the marine layer. A low-lying band of moisture that clings to the coastline. Go inland a bit and it won't reach. I live near the beach, so I'm often in the marine layer.
Also, we have a harbor seal rookery down the coast a bit. Come see them in the springtime, and they'll have pups. So cute!

I agree, for the drive from Monterey to LA, you need a good 4 days to stop and enjoy everything properly. You can do the drive all in one day, " and I have", but it is brutal.

@@user-xd1ze4jf6e When I was a kid in the 60's we would drive from SF to Hollywood to visit my dad's aunt on a regular basis - almost always on PCH. We would always make a side trip to Solvang for Anderson's split pea soup. I loathed it then, and love it now! My mom had a friend who would get us free passes to Disneyland. My mom would drop my brother and sister and I off before opening and pick us up at the end of the day - heaven. My aunt had a huge avocado tree in her back yard and my brother would climb up and pick tons of avocados for us to eat and take home. I miss those days.
One of the even more famous road trips, which is stunning itself, is going from one end of Rt 66 to the other (Los Angeles to Chicago). It is a 2400 mile trip!
It is amazing, takes some work and vigilance to stay on the original route.
We did that as a family trip in the 60's before the interstate highways were completed. Awesome trip!
In SF at Fisherman Whorf, Sea lions used to take over the docks. So they built them their own dock area to lounge around on all day. It's a busy tourist spot.

The Blue Ridge Parkway, when the fall colors are peaking, is a phenomenal drive.
The highway he's driving is also known as the "PCH" or "Pacific Coast Highway". There are a few small breaks of it, but it stretches all the way South to San Diego. The drive is an absolute must if you ever have the time and opportunity. Especially from where he is in the Carmel/Montery area down to Santa Barbera, just north of LA. As pretty as it is here, video simply doesn't do it justice, it's so much more beautiful in person.
And you can keep going north on it from there all the way to Washington. I haven't been on it in Washington, but it's a pretty spectacular drive in Oregon too.
I have done this drive so many times, and i would do it 100 times more if i could. It is spectacular in pictures and movies but it is beyond any of that when you are there. The power and beauty of nature surrounds you. It is unique to itself and is beauty is like our national parks.
As an American, yes, it's normal to surf here. The best surfing waters are in California.
The elephant seals are actually kind, but most just stay clear from them.
Nice houses in LA, but it takes hours to get anywhere.

I drove this with my dad when I graduated high school. We both were born and raised in California and we still got to see and do things we had never had time to do before. Its pretty amazing. And I got to go to that castle he talks about. Hearst Castle is petty dope experience.

If 4 hours is a long drive dont bother visiting the U.S. because it takes longer than 4 hours+ to get from border to border in a state let alone between states.
from New York to LA is a solid 65 hours of straight driving, only stopping for gas and no breaks. In Texas (I believe) you can drive 12 hours+ straight and still be in Texas. LOL
Moved to Florida from Texas when I got married. Coming back to visit family I entered from Louisiana. Road sign in Orange, TX- El Paso TX, 893 miles.

Pebble Beach is a town, but also a famous Golf Tournament that is held in the Pebble Beach Resort, which is also a Community. Also, Carmel, CA is one of the richest communities in California, BECAUSE OF PEBBLE BEACH. Carmel was also famous because back in the 90s Clint Eastwood was their Mayor.
Spanish Bay is a great golf course as well. Designed by Tom Watson I believe.
'pebble beach' is just because some beaches don't have sand, but instead they have small stones (pebbles) or large stone and are very rocky (usually very close to cliffs and the rocks fall off the cliff. Although, the specific 'pebble beach' he's at is actually a sand beach and it's just named that...
Lewis, I don't think you realize why they're called "Elephant Seals". Full grown males are up to 15 feet long [5 meters] and can weigh as much as 7,000 pounds [3,000kg]. Even if they don't bite you, they can quite literally CRUSH you.

Road trips in the USA and Canada can go on for days and days! We once drove 2500 miles, one way, then back again 2 days later. All in Canada. It was to go see Queen in concert in 1981 in Montreal. I had to be there!
My husband and I once drove from Miami to Portland Oregon on a job relocation trip. Long trip (2600 miles) but one of the highlights of our lives! We took 3 weeks!
Yes most newer cars heated seats or air-conditioned seats. My car has them both. I love them.. they are def a luxury i wouldn't want to change lol the whole seat gets hot or cold. The heated seats helps if you back is sore lol

When I was a kid we would go on YMCA trips one of the ones that I did several times was to Big Sur for surf camp, I was absolutely not a surfer, I sucked, so I boogie boarded but it was a lot of fun and it was near where they're at they're in Big Sur. I was much much closer to Torrey pines and La Jolla those are probably places that you might have heard of.
One of the nicest drives you can make. I did a multi day road trip where I drove from Vancouver Canada to LA through Washington, Oregon and California. I'm part of a car club, so driving is our thing. The sights and stops with the food and wine options are second to none in the entire world.
As a former Native Californian, the physical and geographical beauty of the state is fantastic. Even as locals, we appreciate the beauty for sure. Also, I have a 2015 GMC Yukon and I have seat warmer and air conditioning as does the passenger and the rear seats I didn’t know it was uncommon for newer vehicles.
He drove thru my town on his way to SF according to his info. I’m a native Northern Californian and will never leave. I work In Napa Valley. Yes there are crazy people who would go down there into a herd of wild elephant seals or a herd of American Bison (buffalo) and wond why it attacked them when they pet them. 😂

I was born & raised in CA & we lived in north, south & middle CA while I was growing up. I left the state for NC when I married (beautiful state). Moved around the U.S. & finally back to care for my elderly mother in CA. In all that time, I was never aware CA had "wilderness areas", nor that I'd lived close to any of them & I still do.
The inland areas this man showed while driving from Monterey down to Santa Barbara & beyond, are designated wilderness areas. CA has 149 wilderness areas covering over 15 million acres. Wish he'd started a bit north & shown the Redwoods & Giant Sequoias. Giant trees! One they've cut a car tunnel through the base of the tree so you can drive through.
I am kinda biased but have been across the USA by car a few times and Route 1 & PCH are among the most beautiful drives 🚗 in the 🇺🇸!!
Elephant Seals are big. Remember Neil the Seal? His debut was when he was a baby. They are heavy (a couple tonnes full grown) and dangerous if provoked. They can bite and can body slam you and you will lose.
In San Louis Obispo there is a beach called Moonstone Beach. And instead of sand it is covered with semi precious stones. Jadeite, quartz , amethyst, sandstone. It's amazing, and beautiful.

It’s because they drove past it at night settling in at San Louis Obispo. That’s quite a little drive back north to see it. They should have stayed in Cambria just outside of San Simeon . Very charming little village. I guess you can’t see everything. That tour takes forever anyway
This part of California has a climate simular to the South of France. There is a road that runs behind the Bixby Creek bridge, taking out through a local lovely forest. Ten miles of the road takes you back out onto Highway 1, where they are traveling.

Dreaming about visiting the US but hate driving? As a Finn I've only been to 43 states but the most I've driven without rest is 2000 miles. Very pleasant in a Cadillac or Lincoln. I'd stay away from a Mustang but a Dodge Challenger would be OK.

The Scottish Thistle is the flower of Scotland. Do Not step on them without shoes on.
Apparently, some invaders stepped on them, and their silent invasion was no more. We have them here in Utah, too. They are pretty, but you really don't want them in your lawn.
They are all over southern Kentucky too.
Thistle is everywhere, the roots are edible, but they taste bitter.
Also called milk thistle. Excellent for liver health.
It's invasive here and is now considered a major agricultural and wildland noxious weed.
We have them in Michigan too lol. The horse farm I boarded at had a giant thistle growing right next to the fence of the outdoor arena. Watched a horse run his rider into it, rider was not happy lol.🇺🇸
BTW, you can't do this drive right now. There's a big slide south of Big Sur that happened last year and reconstruction is still not completed. To the north of Big Sur, there's a slipout, part of the road collapsed into the sea. They are caravaning people in at the moment. The only people allowed in are residents, however, they are working on a one way traffic light that will hopefully be up sometime this summer.
My husband had a 25th Anniversary Mustang GT 5.0 convertible when we met. The biggest problem is when the top starts to have issues, you have ISSUES. Leaks, air getting underneath, tears. Replacing them are $$$ and you can only hope they installed it right, or you'll have the same problems. I refuse to buy another convertible. But to rent on vacation? Sure. Go for it!
My Mustang always gave me a headache when the roof was down.
The seals on it go poof really fast and leak if you ignore it

@@gioiapharo7433 The last top I replaced on a car, within a couple days some asshole decided to shred it with a knife. Had that happen more than once. I put a new top on a 72 Cutlass I had on my car lot. Next day when I came into the lot the top was shredded.
Driving from Minnesota to Virginia in May to spend a few days with my youngest daughter. It's going to take 20 hrs which we will split into 2 days. Can't wait! Love road trips

The tide pools in Pacific Grove are amazing! You can walk around at low tide and see all sorts of marine life up close. Also, if you're really quiet, you can watch the deer just hanging out in the neighborhood just up from the beach. It really is a magical place.
Monterey, Carmel and Big Sur are some of the most scenic and beautiful drives in My home state and maybe the whole US as well. Used to drive it often to visit my daughter who was in military training in Monterey. Miss it terrribly!

Have only been to Carmel a few times when our H.S. went to basketball playoffs a bazillion years ago & then when my mom, my son & I did our own Hwy 1 road trip, then over to Carson City, NV & back through Senora Pass (scared me to death!😱).

I have to disagree because I live of of the Blue Ridge Parkway on the Appalachian Trail and this is the most beautiful scenery I’ve seen!

@@christypriest30 We lived in Hendersonville for more than a dozen years & the Blue Ridge Parkway, no matter the season, is absolutely breathtaking, but the Fall, when it looks like a patchwork quilt that God created just for us, is magnificent!

The Blue Ridge Parkway is another classic American drive, 470 miles up the spine of the Appalachians. The Mohawk River Valley across upstate New York is beautiful and just the right size for a day trip.
Here in Florida. I live in Saint Augustine and Stuart Florida. And I usually take A1A. Which is like That. It Takes you long The. Ocean. It's a beautiful drive. If I'm in hurry I take I95. William s

This drive is one of the most famous in America. California 1 is also known as the PCH, Pacific Coast highway. Other comparable drives would be Miami to Key West, Going to the Sun Road through Glacier National Park in Montana.
There are often rock slides on this road, closing it temporarily.
And it's closed right now.

Those elephant seals are absolutely massive. You wouldn’t go down there. They’d killl you. And if you didn’t die, you’d get arrested and fined for going down there and disturbing them.

Epic drive! I'm so glad this couple is getting the full experience of the California coast, starting with the redwoods, all the way down to the sandy beaches of the south.
California protects its wildlife habitats, you'll encounter roadside elk up north, deer-- everywhere, and sea life!
He really didn't do Santa Barbara any justice, it's stunning Spanish influence is just the tip of the Southern California experience. And food to die for!
It's an Inn.... bed & breakfast type place usually decorated with antiques. The safe is just.a night stand.

Carmel is a town on the coast south of San Francisco. Clint Eastwood (the actor) used to be the Mayor for a while. It's very upscale. Monterey nearby is a little less high toned but only a little. It was once the Spanish capital of Alta California. Listen to the old Kingston Trio song, "The South Coast (The wild Coast)" to get into the mood.
It's illegal to harass the seal colonies on California beaches. Don't "go down there"!
Made that drive many times…very beautiful! Monterey Bay Aquarium is fantastic too. The farther south you go, the warmer it is…all beautiful! When I was dating, made that trip in a 67’ corvette, with the top off…married the guy, 45+ yrs now😊. We still live near the Southern California coast!
I am 62 and know I will never see all the beauty the U S has to offer. It would take several lifetimes. Just deeply grateful for what I have seen. Hell. I've gotten lost on detours in my own state both alone and with friends and been totally shocked.
That's so very true, as I've sen only a small fraction of the U.S. But my line of work wasn't the most conducive for sightseeing. I worked the carnival circuit, and you don't see as much as some might believe.
That is the best drive I have ever done in in the USA. I have done it 4 times so far. It is even prettier to me than the drive around the Island of Oahu in Hawaii. The road can be foggy, or the rare times it is raining, that drive can be a lot more dangerous, due to being in the middle of the fog and clouds.
Pebble Beach is a famous golf course. Also, California is 800 miles north to south. It's not a one day trip. From NYC to LA it's 4490 km. Route 66 is 2248 miles. You need at least a month to travel cross country east to west, if you want to see anything along the way. One that I always keep in mind is how dark it is at night once you get away from the big cities. We drove 300 miles in Wyoming at night once without any moonlight and we couldn't see the other side of the highway at all.

California will have the hottest temperatures and the coldest temperatures in the entire country. Death Valley holds the record high temperature in the world and 10-20 km to the west there are glaciers. California is very special.
Hwy 1 is one of the most beautiful drives in the world. It's up there with Australia's Great Ocean Road, the Hana Hwy in Maui, the Amalfi Coast in Italy....
When you go, stop at Nepenthe for. A meal and astounding views and the laid back vibe.
I've been blessed to travel many places in my life, but the Monterey Peninsula and the drive down the coast is still my favorite place on earth . The scenery is stunning, there are impressive forests of Redwood trees, and the air is so fresh and exilarating. Plan on a slow day. Take time to ho slowly, stopping to take pics and see the view.
Probably the most famous U.S. road trip is old Route 66 that left from Illinois (I believe), went through middle America and heads southwest and ended up in Cali, I believe (or very close). You can see so much but it’s just not labeled Hwy 66 anymore. I’d love THAT road trip myself. The PCH is a freaking dream. ❤️
I taught my grandson to surf about 30 miles north of where he started.
They really need to drive through The Midwest! Cali is beautiful, but…my friend from the Oakland, Alameda/ San Francisco region visited Wisconsin. He was amazed just how beautiful Wisconsin!

The Lakeshore Scenic route around Lake Michigan is a good drive in Fall.
Just get off the interstate highways to tbe back roads along Iowa's west and east coasts, Loess Hilks along the Missouri River and Davenport north along the Mississippi River, Galena Illinois, Elkader, Spillville, Decorah, Lansing iowa, Along the Root River tiw mb s like Preatin, Lanesboro, Minnesota, La Crosse and The Dells in Wisconsin
That elephant seal colony is awesome. It is illegal to get within 1000 feet of them. First they can by aggressive - but mostly passive. The babies are adorable !
We are from south east Texas. My husband started surfing when he was 6 years old. The older guys watched over him. Then when he was 17, he joined the navy. He took his surf board with him and surfed the world. Then much later he would go on surfing trips with his buddies. One time they went to Costa Rica and surfed in the Masters class(older guys). One of his friends and in first, and my husband came in third. We are talking world class. They made it into several surfing magazines. He finally had to stop due to health reasons.
He's starting south of San Francisco, which is 2/3 of the way up the California section of the coast, so only about 20% of the whole west coast!
Carmel by the Sea is a VERY ritzy neighborhood and only millionaires can afford to live there.
The bridge has been used in LOTS of ads.
Surfing is done all along the coasts of the US, east & west, but the west coast waves are bigger, the ones in Hawaii are 'not to be believed' huge!!
We're used to driving, so we think nothing of going for hours. . . I drove, by myself, to our daughter's house in Dayton ( from MD ), 10 hours. No big deal.
You don't go near the seals; the bulls will attack you and they are protected by law, so, if caught, you'd be fined.
It's not all females on the beach. The male seals are in there with their 'harems'. The males are twice as big as the females.
There are probably dozens of 'family' groups on that beach.
Carmel/Monterey big money. Doris Day lived there. Lovely location! Big Sur!! Great views!

Doris Day, Kim Novak, Beach Boys, Tom Petty, Ted Turner, just to name a few. Oh, Bing Crosby, of course. And Bob Hope lived at "Wits End". 🤣

Surfing is a very normal thing here.( I live Galveston Texas gulf coast) my son and daughter in law had a beach wedding and she surfed in her wedding dress.Absolutely stunning wedding.❤ We have quite a few world class surfers living in this area. 🏄♂️
I live in Monterey, Pebble Beach is a private "city" quietly on the shore between Monterey and Carmel. Wooded area full of some of the richest people in the world. Also has exclusive golf courses.

In La Jolla, CA which is right outside of San Diego there's a beach where a whole bunch of seals lay out on the sand and swim in the water and you can go down to the beach and get in the water with them. There have been times where people threw rocks at them and local authorities closed the beach to protect the seals. For the most part, the people and seals coexist peacefully there. You just aren't allowed to touch them.

I grew up in Carmel 1959-1971. We lived in Carmel for a time and also Carmel Valley. I went to 8th grade in Pebble Beach at a private school before we moved north to the SF Bay area (east bay area). That drive from Pebble Beach to Big Sur is in my opinion the best part of California. I wish Shaun would have spent more time in Carmel (in the city center). It's very unique. Carmel Mission, Hearst Castle and too many others to name. I wish I could go back in time because I took the beauty for granted when I was just a kid.

Rent a campervan in Vegas and head north to the Big Five national parks in Utah.
Highway 101 from northern cali to the Canadian border is all so much more gorgeous. People visiting really really miss out only going to the main tourist sites and states.
101 down from northern Oregon to the California border is nothing to sneeze at either, except for a brief dull section along the dunes. I'm headed down to the redwoods next week along that route.
@@elkins4406 I edited my comment, I meant to say norther California to the Canada border. I'm from Idaho and try to make that drive once a year or every other year, it's all so gorgeous. Popping off to some of the side towns is great too, less tourists and more locals. I enjoy talking to locals to find out things they think are cool, and that they do that may not be attainable through the Internet lol

If planing a trip down Hgwy 1 in spring or early summer, check for possible road closures around Big Sur. Winter storms often cause serious road damages. Right nos [04/28] it is closed to nonresident with limited one way access twice a day!😮

What could match that view you asked well The Million Dollar Highway, also known as U.S. Route 550 is a 25-mile stretch of highway that runs from Ouray to Silverton in southwestern Colorado. You have to react to the Million dollar highway. Also, Sedona Arizona it's beautiful.
If you are in the Silverton area wouldn't it be better to take the train? I hear that Silverton Railroad is amazing.
Yes some cars have seat ac & heat and some cars have ac & heated steering wheels too.
