I wouldn’t call Michael a narcissist at all. He has too much empathy and deep rooted insecurity to be an actually narcissistic person. He’s more so like Erin in that he too has low self esteem but he’s developed a facade of confidence to hide his vulnerability and I think that’s one of the best things about Michael and Erin is that they both build each other up throughout the series as Micheal is the father figure she never had and Erin is someone who just gets him and will always laugh at his jokes.

Erin is such an underrated character. The first time I watched the office I didn’t like her much because of how infantile her personality was. But while I started rewatching the series, I realized that she’s one of the most pure and loving characters. Because of her background of feeling and being rejected by her parents and later in by other people, she had this pressure to be pleasing to everyone even if that meant breaking her boundaries. I enjoyed that unlike most female characters, she was one of the few who was not sexualized and instead brought different sides and dimensions to the rest of the cast, like Michael exploring his paternal side with her.
After Michael's departure from the show, one of the reasons I continued watching The Office was Erin. She was SO LIKABLE and had a genuine, if shallow character arc.
Even as a dude that struggles with low self esteem, I can't relate with the women in the workplace angle, but I almost fee like it applies to me too. It feels really good to see an analysis of this. I've watched almost all of your discussions for Friends and The Office and I'm really gaining a new depth of appreciation for those shows beyond the 'comfort food' aspect they have in my life.
This is my new favorite of your videos. Really put a whole new take on Erin’s arc for me. I hated what they did to the Andy Bernard character in the show but I always loved Erin and now I get why.
Erin is the type of girl I fall in love with. Chipper, innocent, playful, really cute, vulnerable, approachable, and a smile that lights up her face. As I watched this video I realized maybe I also find her low self-esteem relatable. That feeling that the right partner can make you feel complete? Well when you feel that thing and then you can date another person who is amazing who also feels that thing (because a lot of people are too self-assured to ever feel like that), yes, potentially destructive but man the emotional spark that generates is just wild and rare.
Eh sorry, I’m just not a fan of the ideal that is ingrained into this video. If you have low self esteem (hi I have it a lot) it shouldn’t be viewed as “oh this gives me strength because I hate myself” I’d rather view it as something that Pam illustrated with her character: “it would just make my heart soar if she saw this and said to herself “be strong, trust yourself, love yourself, conquer your fears” which I actually think the show was working towards with Erin. At the end of the show, she worked past the fear of leaving Andy and was in a healthy happy relationship with Pete which paralleled Pam’s progress after she left Roy. I don’t like focusing on her low self esteem because it doesn’t define her and we shouldn’t let it define us. Just my “take” though c: I also think that erin’s “secret power” was the actress that played her. I don’t think anyone else could’ve pulled her character off the way she did & that’s why we like Erin so much.
I don’t think they were saying that low self-esteem is what defined her. I think they highlighted how a trait we see as negative (low self-esteem) can lead to and grow into something more positive. We live in a world where on one hand, low self-esteem is overly glorified (esp. in women), and on the other hand there are people shouting from the rooftops that people with low self-esteem shouldn’t be that way. I think this video was a nice middle ground. It showed how others worked with Erin, and gently led her to be more self-actualized on her own, rather than try to snap her out of it, so to speak. The Take wasn’t praising low self-esteem, but rather, the more positive traits that are more often ASSOCIATED with low self-esteem. (Openness, kindness, etc.) Which, I believe can be a good thing that balances our perspective, because now confidence (as well as the negative traits that come with that quality) is being overly glorified sometimes.
I agree with your take (that some will see the video and think it promotes low self-esteem or depression as good and should define them). Its a balance. The video points out all the dangers and pitfalls of having low-self esteem, but for the specific character of Erin--who is surrounded by a quirky family of coworkers who both care for and take advantage of her--, this seemingly negative trait helped her grow as a person. It's easy to see the title and think "oh, so they think low-self esteem is good?" But as with everything, it's not so black and white: the grey area is that it both helps and hurts in certain ways, but the video focuses on the helpful part.
I love you smart ladies of the take! Thank you for taking time to reflect and analyze how cinema, tv represents us and ultimately shapes us. The later making these type of revelations especially of women at important tool to revaluate healthy representation of women and minorities. Thank you
While I do not think that low self-esteem is good. I like the detailed analysis of what it means to have a low self-esteem. I love her passion, even if it's caused by low self-esteem. I can imagine similar psychology in people with healthy self-esteem.
I love all of your videos, but this one specifically struck such a chord with me!!!! You two are geniuses! I know the patterns seem so easy to connect once you have them laid out, but your opinions are so well thought-out and poignant and I'm just feeling emotional cus I never ever thought I'd relate to Erin so much. I just love this video I've said it before and I'll say it again I wish you could analyse my life this way 😂❤️ it just all makes such perfect sense! And everything you say seems so wholesome. You present problematic patterns but in a way that makes them seem solvable. Your critique is just so clever and lovely.
I love how you are making videos of every character of The Office. Can you do that with the characters of Gossip Girl? You have plenty of material for videos there...
I love Erin and this is a really good analysis and breakdown of her character, but I’ve alway hated the implication that Erin and Pete are the new Jim and Pam, because it implies that Pam and Roy were actually incredibly perfect for each other but the day they started filming the documentary Roy started acting completely different for no reason and it wasn’t on Pam to overcome her own sense of self worth and realize she’s been settling for years so much as she just needs to see that this guy has changed and she just needs to move on to the next guy who will be half decent to her. Which idk to me that just devalues Jim and Pam’s entire arc because it was a lot more nuanced then the wash, rinse, repeat of the love triangle that was Erin, Pete, and Andy in season 9.
At least he didn't totally crash and burn, he became wiser through all the suffering. He's a well-adjusted mature good person in the finale... I like to think he was happy in the end.

9:09 the closeup to Ellen with the voiceover that your company can misuse and exploit you is gold! 🤣
Srsly died lmao
Erin was, and still is, my all-time favorite character from The Office. She was so lovable, and her and Michael's dynamic was so sweet. I wish that she got the love she deserves :(
This was such a thrill. Loving your The Office character analysises, as well as literally every single thing you post. Please make some for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, it's one of the best things that have ever happened to television. It covers so many important issues, especially about mental health, relationship dynamics and so many other things. Rachel Bloom deserves your attention, awesome people of The Take!
Erin was the sweetest person at heart.
No malice toward anyone.❤️
She hated Gabe.
Hannah Nicole that’s true after she dated him - can you blame her😇
@@batgurrl I don't blame her at all. Gabe was a terrible boyfriend.
Hannah Nicole and lets be honest he was kind of physically repulsive lol
I don’t remember her exact words but in Nepotism in which we learned she broke up with Andy and was dating Gabe she innocently said something about she wouldn’t have dated him if ‘she didn’t have to’😇we love Erin but she was not the sharpest knife in the drawer...
why is it a good thing not to hate people. thats a sign of low self esteem
This is such a nice surprise!! I loved Erin so much
I love how you’ve explained Erin’s growth through her relationships, some people feel that Erin’s relationships are needlessly thrown in to help interest but I think they add a lot to her character and I love when she ends up with Pete
I loved this! This was such a positive take on having a low self esteem.
Loved it! I never really thought about Erin this way, its enlightening. Hey could you do Serena Van der Woodsen and Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girl?
They have a mean girl trope deconstruction which applies to Blair too. For Serena watch both "Cool Girl Trope" and "Gossip Girl Ending Explained" tho I would also love individual videos on them not gonna lie
I really wish I was more confident. There are very few things I like about myself, but I do think my humility and willingness to see the goodness in people is one of them. It has its draw backs and pitfalls, but it’s part of who I am.
oh hell yeah i would be so powerful. thanks, the take!
also i would love to see a video on crazy ex girlfriend or russian doll. these don't get as much attention, but i think they have great (nuanced) themes that are worth exploring! love your videos
Erin was a very sweet, funny lovable character.
You would need low self esteem to date both Gabe and Andy Bernard 😬
Especially Gabe
Amen
😳
Plop the most dull, forgettable boring character ever. Even worst than Devon.
@@W0LV1E45 Devon was great, wdym, lmao.
Watched this for erin, got diagnosed with low self-esteem loll
False confidence and a facade of strength is way weaker than self aware low self esteem. She actually seems stronger than most people I meet.
Erin is the ONLY good thing to blossom after the legendary Michael Scott left.
why are these videos about the office making me think about my life-
Frr these make me really think
Where is your pfp from? Asking for a science assignment
Erin is Michael's dream daughter.........
Erin's power is that she's cute as hell.
and that smile
oh my god
If having low-self esteem is cool, consider me Miles Davis.
Maaaaaan why is a video about Erin making me tear up???? I love found family stories
Unbreakable! Kimmy Schmidt
Unbreakable! They alive dammit!
It's a miracle!
Y’all better do a Take on Kimmy!!!!!!
@@wvu05 Females are strong as hell!
Erin does everything with such genuineness. I love it.
I was waiting for you to make one about Erin! I thought it would be about her inner child due to a lost childhood.... but this was fantastic 🤙🏻
I loved Erin's character the most and loved her evolution. I was so happy with her when she ditched Andy. Love the work!
After Michael's departure from the show, one of the reasons I continued watching The Office was Erin. She was SO LIKABLE and had a genuine, if shallow character arc.
Erin was a very well sculpted character. Very accurate as a depiction of a woman traumatized in childhood.
I started to notice her changes specially in her curly hair. She looks like a sophisticated woman compared to early seasons.
They skipped my fav part, “eat it stanley!” Lol
Erin is my favorite character, I'm so glad you made a video on her. 😊
Just my “take” though c:
I also think that erin’s “secret power” was the actress that played her. I don’t think anyone else could’ve pulled her character off the way she did & that’s why we like Erin so much.
Ohhhh nailed it!!! I think it’s how she is overcoming her past
It's easy to see the title and think "oh, so they think low-self esteem is good?" But as with everything, it's not so black and white: the grey area is that it both helps and hurts in certain ways, but the video focuses on the helpful part.
yup
Erin was responsible for the extended life of the office! Loved her addition.
I just love this video
I've said it before and I'll say it again I wish you could analyse my life this way 😂❤️ it just all makes such perfect sense! And everything you say seems so wholesome. You present problematic patterns but in a way that makes them seem solvable. Your critique is just so clever and lovely.
She was honestly my favorite character. She just stole my heart.
Absolutely my favorite character. I even liked her with Pete, even if it was rushed.
Please now Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt - which like many, we think it's he better role, her character arc!
Erin is the little sister we all need.
Looking back at the relationship with Erin and Andy, I changed my opinion and think that the writers didn’t make a mistake with Erin and Pete
Erin is quite literally like watching myself as a character on the office, it’s uncanny 💀 she’s My favorite because I so relate to her :3
I loved Erin! I always felt like she was hilarious and she brought a lightness to any scene. I look forward to seeing her when Michael left
The Take mentioning the bon apetit situation somehow made me realize it was all real
Just realized how similar Erin and Michael can be at times.
Why did this make me cry?
Erin had the funniest lines in The Office. The one-liner of no woman, no cry cracks me up every time I hear it.
Calling Michael a narcissist broke my heart. The take on Erin is awesome still and so wholesome
Andy’s trajectory was painful to watch poor Andy
At least he didn't totally crash and burn, he became wiser through all the suffering. He's a well-adjusted mature good person in the finale... I like to think he was happy in the end.
Strength in compassion and hope.
Aww, I like Erin so much more than I already did now, but I also feel really bad for her😊
