You could have folded the straps over the top of the insert tube for even more strength. I am lazy and would have used longer rectangles for the pin hole reinforcements and run them full width. As more of a grinder, for me, that would avoid the oval welding challenge.
haha So I've actually done both of these things on the very first hitch I build before these two. It just didn't look as good, the simpler shapes are easier to build and work totally fine.
