I remain unconvinced in the sense that i think reason two is more important than the other two combined, but this is a very thoughtful discussion of the question. And the last pont you highlight is huge. Passion is a big factor in success, and if we can avoid dampening it at the beginning, we (as teachers, parents, friends, etc.) should! Our own thoughts about what's "best" should come in a distant second to what excites the student.
I’ve just started learning on an acoustic, but trying to do the hard yards now before eventually switching over to electric. Originally a piano player, and switching from weighted keys to non weighted feels like you glide across the keys, so anticipating something similar - learning on a instrument requiring heavier fingering is a tougher start, but well worth it in the long run. I’ve been playing for about two weeks, and definitely prefer improving lead over strumming chords (although may be influenced by not being able to switch between shapes easily, versus general lead playing which I can play just by ear)
Acoustics and Electrics are different beasts. I grew up as a hard-hitting, hard-gripping acoustic chord playing guitarist. Fast forward 50 years, I now also have an electric. While the electric has a better action, I'm struggling to adjust my technique, and I prefer the wider neck of my acoustic. I also feel that in a generic sense, the acoustic is more of a "chord" instrument, and the electric, is better utilised as a lead instrument. I prefer the acoustic, however, they need to be better maintained; climate can he a killer
Great video. I appreciate your insight. Overall, I love the advice to chose which is the desire of the person. If that is an option. I really grateful when I learned guitar to have the motivation, desire and enjoyment I had. I didn't have much natural music ability or background but my love for it won out. I also got the guitar as a gift from my uncle so I felt gratitude.
