    Been with Adobe my whole life, but I've switched over to Resolve in the last month. Now I'm kicking myself for not doing it sooner. Goodbye, bloated Adobe products! Blackmagic just needs to release something to compete with Photoshop then I can completely drop Adobe.

    • @JayLippman
      @JayLippman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      I doubt they're going to do that anytime soon. Black Magic is really good at staying in their lane when it comes to their products. But it would be sick if that happenned!

  • @rbaleksandar
    @rbaleksandar 4 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    The simple truth is this: just like with every other product out there if you reach the peak, there is a huge chance of stagnation. Adobe has been milking its creative products (Photoshop, Premiere Pro etc.) for decades and at some point stopped giving a shit what the customers think.
    You forgot (I think) to mention that it runs on Windows, MacOS AND Linux. Since I use Linux DaVinci was the clear choice.

      But they need to provide real packages for it, not that crappy self-installer that's only for CentOS that almost no one uses. AppImage, Flatpak, and Snap please. Any one of those would make it easily usable on the vast majority of systems, and Snap and Flatpak allow easy updating. If they want user details they should put the form inside the program.

    I read in the beginning of opening DR that you need to buy the Studio version of DR if you want to edit and upload videos in 4K. Is this correct? Secondly does the free version come with all the fonts required? I am in the process of switching from the Mac Mini imovie (which I found to be totally adequate for what I edit and upload) but rendering became slow so I have at considerable expense had a new computer built with Windows 10. I am at the beginning of trying to decide which software program to use to do tutorials on. I nearly bought into the Adobe Premiere Pro but watching this video has me thinking of starting with DR but I need to edit in 4K.

    Jay Lippman I'm not sure should I use DaVinci Resolve? I need to render 4k 60fps video. I currently using Sony Vegas Pro 17. But it has tons of bugs & glitches. Such as video/ audio not recognized by the software. It really slows down my production progress. Even though I research on Google I still unable to find any solution that can solve my problem.

    • @JayLippman
      @JayLippman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The ability to edit 4K 60 has less to do with your software and more to do with your system. Both Resolve and Premiere can handle it, but how your system is configured will largely determine which program you choose. Premiere relies more on the CPU, and Resolve relies more on the GPU. So if you have a good CPU with lots of RAM, but your GPU is a little lacking, go with Premiere. If you have a really good GPU with lots of VRAM, go with Davinci. If you've got lots of RAM and VRAM, it won't really matter which you choose, because both will work well.

  • @haurjie

    Hey, thanks for the video. I'm actually looking into Resolve now primarily for 1 reason, and 2 questions.
    Goal: Move into 4K editing (I'm currently using Premiere Pro CS6 for as long as I can because it's non-subscription fee based). The issue is that this older version CS6 doesn't do well with 4K footage.
    Question 1: Can Davinci Resolve edit and handle 4K footage natively.
    Question 2: Premiere Pro is more CPU intensive, not so much GPU (if any at all). I have both a strong CPU AND GPU... I heard Resolve splits the workload between the two and it would be nice to actually utilize my expensive graphics card to the best it can and not just use it for gaming. Can you confirm or know if Resolve has this workload split for the hardware?

    • @JayLippman
      @JayLippman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      happened! And yes! Resolve can handle 4k as long as your computer can, and they do a really good job of balancing the workload between the CPU and GPU.

    • @Cragdognamedbear
      @Cragdognamedbear 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Davinci Resolve is highly optimized for 4K over Premiere. You can cache and prerender your clips while still editing without drop in performance. Much better than Premiere's proxy system that screws up timecodes or it's slow renderer that has to rerender the whole clip everytime you add an effect.

    Am a new creator and learned on PP. 2019 had problems, but so far with the 2020 I had no problems. I edit and render pretty quickly and the audio on the $20.99 monthly subscription is just fine provided the recording venue is properly sound proofed. I had to call support a few times when I had 2019 and thought they were terrific. To me that is important. I’d rather spend time creating and learning how to better SEO and grow my channel than watching troubleshooting tutorials and getting on forums. Just personal impression thus far. If Adobe doesn’t respond in kind to DR emergence as a serious contender and falls behind I’ll reconsider. For now, I’ll stay put as I am not sold. Many thanks :)

I chose Resolve because I believe in equity (I don't ever want cost to get in the way of a kid who wants to start making films!). This decision FORCED me to switch from Creative Suite and learn Resolve on the fly. It was easy for them to learn, create, and experiment. A few times the kids picked up things I didn't even know you can do. Very pleased with my choice. I get Adobe for free as an educator, but I may be switching regardless. Coming from someone who has never touch any video editing software, I personally think Davinci Resolve is a very beginner friendly-ish editing software especially if you started watching alot of tutorials. The 7 bottom tabs help streamline the editing process and keeps all the important editing tools in one place, making it easier to move between each tabs. The tabs coupled with the overall design keeps things from getting cluttered and help beginners ease into the software without overwhelming them, thus encouraging them to look further without getting them too lost. I've been using Davinci Resolve for 6 months now and its been fun turning a flat looking video into something that has depth.
    In terms of issues, Fusion is a headache to rap my head around with its logic gates though it's probably a personally thing and I haven't fully invested my time into learning it but regardless, it's not something any new users could get use to from the get go. And if you're editing process heavy videos and you don't have a beefy cpu (like me) or at the very least a stable one, its prone to crashing a lot so "CTRL+S" is your best friend whenever you make any changes.
    Overall, Davinci Resolve is a good video editing software for anyone planning to use is has a platform for editing. Whether its a good replacement for other video editing softwares is up to preference.

    Two of many "editorial" things you can't do in Resolve that Premiere does well... 1) add working splines (Easy-in) to position keyframes (try it... does nothing in Resolve 16.1). Otherwise, your chroma-keyed talent will slam from center to one side when revealing a new background. And... 2) trim edits dynamically while looping the adjusted playback over and over. On Premiere (and Avid, for that matter), double click any edit, hit spacebar, then trim your edit with keyboard shortcuts while hearing the results immediately. You can trim out perfect dialogue cuts or fades in much less time in Premiere (shorten the pre-roll and post-roll times to one second for quickness). Isn't trimming a huge part of editing? There's more, but my AE render is done now.

    One weakness DaVinci has compared to Premiere though, is proxy workflows and your workload with Intermediate Codecs when the source footage comes from an unfriendly codec (like H.264 footage sent to me). Premiere comes also with the ability to render a video on the background while you continue working in real-time, via Media Encoder. Media Encoder is not beaten yet... and it comes with Premiere so they should be considered together. Render queue is superior with Premiere.
    - I’m a DaVinci convert having a harder time leaving the flexibility and utility of a multi-computer and multi-video workflow.

    OK so I tried to switch to resolve from FCPX but for some reason It crashes on me so quick I can't do anything with it. It crashes when ever I scrub a clip whether in the timeline or in the media pool. This is just something I started dealing with today and Thats why I'm here Looking for answers. What do you make of it??

    I was never an Adobe user of any of those programs. I used to edit my videos on Sony Vegas back in the days. Then I stopped editing for a few years cause wasn't feeling creative or inspired enough to continue editing. Now, I just recently got back into editing and was looking for a free video editing software since I didn't feel like buying the new version of Sony Vegas Pro and the priced for it is higher today than it was back then. Then I found DaVinci Resolve listed as one of the greatest free editing softwares out there. I first tried Filmora9 but then found out that the free version leaves you a huge watermark all over you video and if want to get rid of it, you had to pay for the studio version and I wasn't feeling it, wasn't ready to invest my money on something I wasn't familair with yet. Back to DaVinci Resolve, I gotta admit it looked kinda scary at first, especially the fusion tab. But after having a deep dive into it, I did recognized a few things that I already knew, I also looked up tutorials on how to start edit with DaVinci resolve adn tbh I haven't even been editing with Resolve that long, just started with it last month. Found a few features on Resolve that Vegas lack of. Only one month of using Resolve and I am already used to it, and I am slowly fairly being confident on trying the fusion tabs and learning the nodes. For a free version it's actually quite good. It's like you said, it has all apps in one software, edit for videos, one for effects, one for music, and one for color grading etc. I am loving it so far and I am not going back to Vegas. I will eventually upgrade to the paid version of DaVinci as well when I can afford it. =)

    Hey. I'm kinda new to the whole pro video editing scene and been editing some stupid videos in PPro in the past years (simple stuff like cutting and changing audio). Nothing hardcore but now I want to start seriously. How am I going to fare coming from a beginner's eyes?

    Got another question Jay, for a beginner like myself - I plan on reviewing cars and starting a YT channel. I will have two camera sources and two audio sources (two people talking). Is it worth getting the Studio version of Resolve for what I plan to do?

    • @JayLippman

      Not necessarily. You can work with multiple video and audio sources in the free version. But the experience in Studio will be much smoother.

    Quick question. If you were stuck on a deserted island with a gorilla. NOT A MONKEY... But a gorilla. What video editing software would you try to teach him/her. I am gorilla-esque... and i'm trying to make simple videos of myself in a room playing songs. I have a mac and I would be recording audio from another source and syncing the audio/video afterward.

    • @JayLippman
      @JayLippman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Off the top of my head I would say Filmora or Movavi for simplicity, but I'm pretty sure with both of them you would have to manually sync the external audio. Premiere and Resolve both can do it automatically, but are much more co.plicated to learn.

    Wai....wait.... did i just watched a channel with subs under 10k? Holy shit! Your presentation is way too good for a small subs channel. I can't believe it when i see your subs count.
    Man, all you need is a new lens and better lighting. Maybe you can try placing 2 different color lighting (such as purple and orange) so you can get some sweet color in your videos.
    Anyway, cheers. Welcome to the club! Great to see more and more people switched to DR.

    I sometimes SaaS even though I am in the IT field and sometimes it pays my bills.
    SaaS (paid subscription programs) are OK sometimes because it provide a great service. But Adobe I think went too far and made the pricing so high, people like us who do TH-cam videos for hobby (not professional) cannot afford it. A good SaaS program I paid for is the Microsoft Office 360 for home users. It is useful for families and the cost is low compared to the features we get. Microsoft also have non SaaS options. This is why I went with Davinci Resolve Free version over Adobe. For most non-pro users, which is a huge sector, it is not wroth to pay for for it. I am not earning money from TH-cam!

    Hi Jay, LOVE your channel. My name is Olaf de Fleur, a film director from Iceland. I'd higly appreciate if you could reflect on a couple of things. I've been moving from Premiere, but when I .xml into Davinci. External audio drifts out of sync. (I've checked 48 vs 44.1 - and that's not the issue) - My main question to you - how I should I setup a sequence in Premiere in the purest way possible - so the import of the .xml will be flawless in DR. Thanks for a great service!

    As a new TH-camr entering the video creator world, I am very pleased with DaVinci Resolve. I started using DR 15 having no clue how to edit videos. Although still in diapers, it is coming along just fine. I agree Resolve 16 crashes from time to time in the editing process, it has happened when rendering the video. Last week I downloaded trial Premiere Pro and had such a bad experience that immediately canceled. For now, I will continue with DR and chances are I will eventually upgrade to the paid version. Still unclear how much more I am going to use being a beginner user. Great video!
