      The audio "Bug: at @ 5:55 all you have to do is use the keyframe to drag up n down and it will show the dB volume when adjusting, instead of grabbing the line

  • @ArjunLama
    @ArjunLama 5 ปีที่แล้ว +141

    Some Solutions :
    5:01 - Click and drag up and down on keyframe not on line. if you click on keyframe it will showup the db number.
    6:58 - Control + click on media end point or on trim mode select end point and press 'U' to see different trim option.
    11:45 - Timeline is behaving like that because you have created many video tracks that are not required and when you're dragging and dropping transition, it is searching for video tracks which are not visible in your timeline. Remove unwanted video track or make the timeline height big enough to show all video tracks.
    15:25 - Click on three small dots '...' in media storage tab and choose 'show individual frame' for jpeg.
    17:15 - Your jpg or png file doesn't have 'alpha source output' that is why it is showing black border. Go to color page and on node panel right click n add alpha output and link it with source.
    19:20 - For saving as preset, go to color page and use input or output sizing and save it as preset.
    I moved from premiere pro ... welcome to the future ...

      @@geraldundone 11:45 still looks pretty annoying, though. Your point is still very valid. It needs to only scroll if you hover over the edges of the timeline for more than say a half a second.
      17:15 should be a setting where alpha is automatically output. I can't think of any reason why anyone would ever want those black bars.

    Hi Gerald, for the "Combines Sequential JPEGs into a Single File" problem, you just need to click on the 3 dots at the top of the media pool. There's an option to treat JPGs as individual images rather than frames of a video. I'm sorry I don't have Resolve at work right now so I can't tell you the exact name of the option, but there's an easy fix. Cheers!

      Just to add to this. There is actually a good reason it treats sequentially numbered images as a single file. That's because assets from 3D programs are typically exported as image sequences which are then used in compositing software (which resolve also is now).
      Having said that, I also ran into this problem when I wanted to use individual pics and it took a minute to figure out the issue. They should probably make it a bit easier to find the option.

    I remember watching some videos from JayzAreTV (probably butchered his channel name) about how to custom make transitions from scratch: swoops, zoom out, zoom in, etc, in the fusion tab. Thing is, you only need to set up the nodes, which are containers for information in the order you want them to happen and then you can save the fusion information to a file on your pc.
    Every time you're on a new project you just need to drag and drop the file into the fusion tab and the nodes will load. Then it's just a matter of plugging the right videos - your inputs - into the corresponding nodes.
    Sounds overwhelming but it's really easy to set up, plus you only need to do it once. Fusion is extremely powerful if you learn how to use it, as it can be seen as a sort of AfterEffects inside the program.
    Word of caution, though. Save your project before before tinkering with the fusion tab. Program tends to crash more often than I would like. Hope this helps.

    to select the "next" clip after splitting, I use "Select follows playhead"

  • @ShadowWolf810
    @ShadowWolf810 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    1. I feel like there shouldn't be drift just from using an external recorder, might be wrong, but NDF vs DF timecode comes to mind. But yes the Elastic Wave is the solution here I think.
    3. Keyframe Fluidity, if you highlight the keyframe, then adjust in the Inspector window you can click and drag left to right over the value and get really fine control.
    5. Extending Clips - Maybe easier maybe not, this annoys me too. There is a keyboard command for "Extend Clip" you can use, but you still have to select the ends of the clips by switching to that other tool. But then when you push the button it'll extend those clips to your playhead, so avoids the weird scrubbing behavior.
    8.5(?). I customized mine to be like Avid. I made "T" be "Mark Clip" then E and R are my In and Out points. T will select the entire clip, then putting an in point where your play head is and then deleting would accomplish what you tried to do in the video by deleting the end of the clip instead. If you want to do the beginning of the clip you'd do T-R-X in my case. I find it much faster then using the blade tool, clicking and dragging, then hitting delete.
    9. When you go to the media pool, if you click the 3 dots and choose "show individual frames" it'll show you the individual JPEG images and you can import them separately from there.
    10. Commenter Problem: When I cut 2 camera interviews, I'll usually just disable the other camera in any one cut, leaving them both, so if I change my mind down the road its easy to switch what camera. Maybe they worked like that, tried to disable everything to see whats underneath, then went back, and had to go back through and choose the cameras again? Not sure there, but for stuff that I've done I could see how that'd be annoying.
    Good work on this video, I hope BlackMagic watches because there are definitely some weird issues going on still.

      Audio drift happens when the clock in one device runs a bit faster or slower than another device, and you don't have a timecode jam-sync system in place. Much more likely when you are recording a live event for an hour or more. You'll rarely notice it when you're doing 10-minute clips. I have this happen all the time, and with Vegas, it's a simple Cntl-drag to fix.

    You can easily adjust volume on a clip by 1 dB by selecting the audio clip or keyframe and using the keyboard shortcut (option-command-plus) or (option-command- minus) to raise or lower by 1dB respectively. There are times that I need more minor adjustments and then I use the inspector or the curve editor like you showed.

  • @TommyCallaway
    @TommyCallaway 5 ปีที่แล้ว +27

    Tip: In the top right where you see the "volume" number (actually click on the number, not the bar), you can click and drag left and right for more fine adjustments, and I'm pretty sure the volume waveform graphic changes while you're dragging. Definitely buggy though.

      @alessandrospenga.video6 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      A compressor will only help in controlled situations, so it's good in the studio. When your outside, and there's lots of noise coming from everywhere, you can't usa a compressor, as it will increase the overall output. When recording someone speaking outside, you just want to raise up the volume of the voice and keep the background noise as silent as possible, which won't happen with a compressor.
      In that case, a limiter is a better option.

  • @Rewt
    @Rewt 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Hey, if BM is watching, I've been trying to make the full switch and have 3 pretty minor, but annoying bugs/behaviors.
    1) I edit a ton for TH-cam with music beds made of many music tracks that I transition from one to the other. In the Cut page, I apply "Cross Fade -3dB," which defaults to an evenly split transition that I'm able to expand and contract. However, I don't like that the only options I have are "Center on Edit," "Start on Edit," or "End on Edit". Especially with music, it helps my workflow to be able to freely move the transition and choose the most aesthetically pleasing transition.
    2) I really like the options in the "Timeline View Options" pane, but I don't like that I'm not able to mix and match audio/video track views. In order to show waveforms on audio tracks, I have to have video thumbnails enabled. My ideal timeline view would be slim video tracks with no video thumbnails, and thicker audio tracks with waveforms active.
    3) I really don't like that the default play head behavior is that if I'm in the middle of playback and change the play head position, it continues to play from the new position. I understand that I'm used to Premiere, which pauses playback when I change the play head position, but I was never able to find a place where I could dictate play head behavior in settings.
    I very much appreciate the video Gerald, and similarly do love Resolve quite a bit.

    Nice compilation here with some workarounds. It is always nice to see when somebody comes up with solutions instead of only bringing problems to the table.
    My biggest complaint is not addressed here and this is it: there is no quick and easy "ease in ease out" feature that I know of. I use this all the time and it is the only thing keeping Premiere on my machine.

    • @EZMotoTim
      @EZMotoTim 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not absolutely certain what sort of ease in and ease out you want to do, but have you tried grabbing the "handles" at the beginning and end of each clip and dragging them? They are present on both the video and audio portions of each clip. Also, if you hover over a junction between 2 clips and right-click, you can insert a cross dissolve. Once inserted and with the transition highlighted, you can change the parameters of the trans. in the inspector and you can change the trans. from Cross dissolve to any of the other options.

    • @TonyDae
      @TonyDae 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure if this is what you are referring about presets, but when Color Grading a video file, right click the preview window and select Grab Still. A still image of the graded video will show up in the gallery pane with all adjustments and nodes etc. From there you can Export that image (with display LUT) to a folder and then re-import it into other projects via the gallery pane.

    For the other audio issues, I believe you're still thinking like a "Premiere Pro user". You're a Resolve user now, and that opens up new work flows. Do your editing on the Edit page. Do all your audio work on the Fairlight page. (After you've done the effects and color work, of course.) Resolve is tailor-made for this kind of partitioned, left to right work flow. And it's brilliant!
    To extend multiple clips in Selection Mode, hold down CTRL and select their end points. You don't HAVE to go into Trim Mode.
    For the sequential JPEG issue, Resolve will by default see them as an Image Sequence (rightly, I'd argue). You can turn that off in the three dot menu - Show Individual Frames.
    You can save your Inspector adjustments as a kind of Preset by applying them to an Adjustment Clip instead of directly on the clip itself. AC's can be dragged to a bin and reused. You can also drag them to a Power Bin, so they show up for use in every project.

      I think your missing the point in some case you are using multiple different recorder, lav mic or capturing from Dec or even speakers directly and even small portable recorders so 1 recorder may be fine but another may have drift issue but maybe that the actuall source you need and your not able to get a large mic attached sometime some wireless recorder also cause drift. it not just for example i use a combination of Tascam DR40, 2x DR10L & Sony recorder TX650 the sony tx650 as once given me a really bad drift and other times it seems to have been fine.
      Remember not all project are the same and some times been creative might require to take a different direction.

      Hey Jim, I've seen drift from a Zoom H4n but that's not why I'm replying to your post. You said that he needs to stop thinking like a Premiere user and start following the workflow of Resolve. Well as someone who has edited thousands of programs, there is no set workflow for every situation. I agree with Gerald, having to switch back and forth between pages just to make a simple adjustment is a waste of valuable time. Sure in a perfect world you would do the workflow like you listed above, but sometimes there are adjustments that present themselves along the way. Also, you can't always edit first and then work on audio. We do large multi-camera shoots that are then synced and edited as a multicam timeline. If you try doing an edit like that with drifting audio, you would be in for one hell of a nightmare edit.

    I watched this from the perspective of a software developer rather than a video editor (which I barely am). It was interesting to theorize about that was going on in the code to cause the bugs you mentioned. I think the render cache one was is sheer laziness. Rather keep around all the necessary parameters to be able to relocate cached segments to a new time, and write the logic to figure what can be re-used and what needs to be re-rendered, they were like, "Screw it, just blow away everything whenever anything changes!" Sounds like a nice job for a summer intern to fix that!

    Hey Gerald, it's good that people like you (who have influence) are making such videos. Even more youtuber with influence should do that. I also reported loads of bugs since version 12 and nothing happened. It seems like Blackmagic doesn't care a lot about their customers complains. Of course u have to distinguish between ease of use or real dramatic problems. But even those big issues which are really time consuming Blackmagic doesn't fix (like losing optimized media and can't relocate which steels you hours of reproducing these lost optimized media; crashing while scrolling through text in fusion, the re-rendering issue u mentioned, etc.). I don't get it. It could be the no.1 video editing software but if Blackmagic doesn't listen and care about the costumers issues they waste so much potential. In my mind this is just mismanagement.

    • @JimRobinson-colors
      @JimRobinson-colors 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Totally disagree - Blackmagic engineers and support people talk to me directly. Never get that kind of support from Adobe - they are just too large a company. The problem with bugs are they maybe bugs and it might just be you or your machine. Some of Gerald's comments in this video illustrates that - he noted things that are recent bugs - and frankly a lot of things he just expects to work the same in Resolve as it does in Premiere- that is the usual complaint. It's a different software - not a knock off of another software. I jsut watched Geralds video quickly - but almost every thing he was complaining about - there are simple and faster ways of doing them. With all software if it feels like there should be a better way of doing something, especially tedious things- there probably is - but you are not aware of it. NLEs all work better for people when they use them extensively. Familiarity = speed and accuracy. But because the free model of Resolve is available for anyone, in a very short time- we are going to see editors that will fly on resolve - Every teenager out there interested in video has access. So switching to Resolve is a good idea because in my opinion - the Adobe subscription model will be a thing of the past soon.

    re: the end screen issue: I find "dynamic project switching" tremendously useful, and it's one solution for what you describe (I think). In the "home screen" where you open projects, right click and enable DPS. Then from the home screen you can open a second project and the original project stays open. Using the drop-down at the top center of the screen, you can switch back and forth between them. This allows you to copy items from the timeline (including all their settings, I assume) and paste from one project to another. I use this the same way you describe: my analogous "end screen" lives in its own resolve project. I open it up, copy everything, switch to the project I'm working on, and paste it in. DPS is invaluable in other ways, too. I'm not 100% sure it will work for everything you describe, but I bet it will. (Note that you have to explicitly close projects once DPS is enabled.) [edit: thinking more, it may not work entirely for you, given that you want to position variable clips in the same spot; maybe you can hack it by using a placeholder video object placed/scaled where you want, and replacing the video source on it, or something to that effect.]
    I would also recommend getting in to compound clips: handy for organizing large projects. Select a bunch of stuff, right click, "new compound clip". It's basically a timeline within a timeline. Right click the compound clip, and choose something like "edit it timeline" (can't remember exactly what it's called.) Once done editing, use the hierarchical list in the bottom left to go up the tree back to the top-level timeline. You can nest multiple layers deep. This is kind of like a souped-up version of grouping clips. You can even chop up and edit pieces of compound clips.

One other thing that annoys me is syncing audio. Perhaps I am doing something wrong, but I can not seem to get Resolve to sync multiple audio sources to one video clip. It does great if you have one external audio and one video clip, but often I have a couple lavs and a boom. At least in Premiere you can add all the audio and video to a timeline and select sync based on audio. Over all, I am very happy that I made the move to Resolve since I will inevitably end up using it for color. Thank you for this video.

I like it that there is a dedicated Audio workspace instead of trying to squeeze all functions into the edit page for example. I do understand that for many people changing their workflow can be a bit of an challenge, but for me , after getting used to it, the new workflow is much smoother and quicker. I do admit , there still are a few quirks and bugs left, but Black Magic is updating the software in such rapid succession that those get quickly resolved. ;-)

    Nice video, good perspective! In terms of combining sequentially-numbered images, this is a standard in the visual effects community. You avoid a lot of potential complications if you have a video sequence stored as a series of still frames that are sequentially numbered. So what Resolve was doing was importing a two-frame video, which is very tiny. If you go to the Media tab in the three-dot menu to the right of the magnifying class at the top, the drop-down lets you choose "Show Individual Frames". (For your use case, just leave this permanently checked.)
    OOPS, just noticed that Jeffson Chung mentioned this, below. Oh well, I got the actual option name for you, and a little bit of why it works this way.
    People will commonly use individual EXR frames, which can carry a lot of channels, especially from a 3D program like Blender. It's also useful because if a (long, slow) render fails part-way through and you're outputting to a movie, the movie is probably unrecoverable, but if you're outputting individual frames you still have most of the frames that you rendered, and can pick up where you left off. Or, if one frame was glitched you could re-render it and replace it and you're done. Some VFX software -- like the open source Natron -- are not really reliable at opening or creating movie formats and almost demand still sequences. Resolve is actually pretty exceptional that way.

  • @dustatron

    you may know this by now. but for adjusting audio key frames with more granular control you can use the inspector panel to type in exact numbers or use the more exact slider. You simply need to have the key frame selected before you adjust the perimeter in the inspector.

      Also, on the preset problem on 20:00 you could always solve that with a fusion comp and Compound Clip.
      Make a compound clip with your 2 sources, open them in Fusion and use a Merge node to overlay your video on top, then use a transform node between your talking head source and the merge node, resize and position there, select the merge node and the transform, save them as a macro or a .settings file and you can reuse that on compound clips forever..... tadaaaaaaaaaa......

    It would appear that the second audio thing you mentioned can be resolved by clicking on the key-frame and then using the clip volume slider in the inspect tab that you had open, as that was changing when you were adjusting the key-frame marker. The reason that you're getting jumps such as that is because of there's not enough resolution on screen to move by such small amounts.
    A higher DPI mouse could help with this a little, but it would appear the adjustments are relative to the resolution of the clip height on screen. So the "Clip Volume" slider in the inspection window would probably be your best bet without adjusting the track heights all the time.

    Too many comments to determine if this has already been mentioned, but the reason the import png thing works where it overlays the whole screen might be for people like me who often work with slides (PP, Keynote, etc.) that need to be embedded in the video as a full screen png overlay. In those cases, automatically having the black bars (typically on the sides instead of top/bottom in my case) is quite convenient. Not sure if that’s why they do this, but it did occur to me.

    6:24 I've noticed some people struggling with this so I will try to explain it.
    Resolve's timeline experience is sort of like Final Cut's toolset on Premiere's timeline. As few tools as possible, but still with track level control. You have Select, Trim and Blade. The 4th only changes certain nuances with how Trim works. When marque/box selecting with the select tool, it selects CLIPS, simple enough. When marque/box selecting with the Trim tool, it selects EDIT POINTS. You can still select clips and even multiple clips with the trim tool, but only 1 at a time by ctrl/cmd clicking the center of the clip on the timeline.
    The Trim tool does one of two things. Slip edit when dragging on the top section (video preview area/top half if not visible). Slide edit on the bottom section.
    7:30 That inconsistent behavior I believe is a bug. Select multiple edit points on a timeline and make a pixel perfect click to change those edit points and it only performs the action on the relevant edit point of the mouse. I've been able to reproduce it. Only happens when you are clicking on a clip that has a gap on the left side. First pixel on the left where the tool changes its icon. If you slow down the video, you can see it too.

    It just hsppened to be working as in protools and that's why i love resolve..it's a great software... just take it slow an dig into the manual..is very clear and you'll get up to speed in no time... to me for example premiere was a stupid software as i come from audio and i have an established workflow.. is just personal preferences ..but resolve just works as I work with audio..
    ;)

    Not a resolve guy (yet, which is why I'm watching) but during your comment about the node for adjusting the volume levels incrementally, I noticed that if you had the node selected, the volume meter bar was changing. It may be a better and more refined way of adjusting maybe? Select the node and use the meter bar (audio tab in top right) to adjust and fine tune?

    I have used virtually every editor out their-free and paid ones. I have to say after watching this video I'll stick with Premiere Pro. Yes, it's rather expensive and finicky at times but I know it very well and they make so many tasks so much easier. I also have additional flexibility of choosing an image in my video and editing it Photoshop and having the results show up back in Premier.
    One bad thing about premier is saving and auto saving.
    I turn auto save off because it causes freezes and crashing at times. I trained myself to just save every few minutes.
    When I save, I do not overwrite a previous save. That has caused corruption of the file.
    I keep the same file name but just add a number in front of each new save, 1 2 3 4 etc.
    When I'm done editing I only keep the last 2 saves.

    Good news - almost all of these are fixed as of 17.4.5! The only one I have found that is not fixed is the render cache still having to update even if you just barely move it

    Thanks for the video on your thoughts with resolve. Can you please tell me what screen recorder you use where you are able to zoom in, unless this was done in edit?

    21:00 You can save the end screen by just dragging it to the Power Bin in the Media Pool. it will be available for all of your projects

    14:56 -- In my first encounter with individual frames, I dragged in a folder of 1400 sequentially-named images (a time lapse sequence) -- and Resolve treated the entire folder of individual frames much like a single video -- awesome for time lapse editing, but as you point out, not so great if you really want to insert individual images. Overall, I am thrilled with Resolve.

    For your problem at minute 19 since resolve 16.1 you can save adjustment clips in your power bins. I saved some dynamic zoom presets this way.
    You can also key frame attributes from the inspector on adjustment clips. The almost work like in Premiere

  • @RathJ13
    @RathJ13 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    as for fine adjustments of a keyframes audio level, just.... use the inspector for volume adjustments. you can be very precise with your mouse, click and hold in the text box for it and move left or right. sure, might take half a second to move up there but it's not really that time consuming.

    Invalidation of the cache is because of timecode of the underlying clips has changed, either start, end or duration. Also, the cache isn't layered, invalidated is invalidated. When working with long timelines, it's slightly more efficient in terms of disk space and playback.

    • @geraldundone
      @geraldundone  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Premiere seems to be able to handle it better so there must be a way, right? A way for it to ignore the changing timecode?

      @@geraldundone oh without doubt. I think some of the devs are of the older school "timecode or GTFO" school of thought.

    Great video! Thanks for starting this convo. I'm in the process of transitioning from PP to DR as well and while I do generally enjoy DR there are a few missing features that make this software borderline unusable as an NLE: inability to copy/paste a SINGLE effect on a clip (I'm not talking about "paste attributes", I'm talking about just one effect); inability to align text elements (this is more about Fusion, I know); no undo functionality when working with text (I mean, seriously?!), no pause render button, no paused resolution, no presets like you mentioned, and much much more.
    To me, the fact that essential features like these are missing, make DR feel like it's still in beta. I know one day this software is going to be great but until then we'll have to find workarounds for everything and it just gets annoying after a while.
    And since we're on the topic of things we don't like about DR I'll just say that learning DR and finding tutorials and materials for it has been so much harder - especially when it comes to Fusion. There are a few people who are putting out tutorials but they can't possibly cover everything. I find myself looking for a solution for hours sometimes... It's a huge time waste.
    For now, I'm sticking with it to see what I can make out of it but don't know how many more of those workarounds I can handle.

    16:18 its importing a image sequence, you can show individual images by activating "show individual frames on the three points in the media page"
    I like it like this, because I use Image sequences for my 3d stuff

    Your audio should not be drifting. I am a certified audio engineer and I do film projects that have hours of continuous footage with multiple cameras. We always use external audio recorders. Usually audio drift is caused by not having your audio bitrate and sample rates set correctly in your external recorder. CD audio is 16bit 44.1kHz (video audio is 24bit 48kHz this is what you should be using) i have found so many people who make this mistake. Make sure your external recorder is set to 24bit 48kHz. Also make sure your cameras are all set to the same frame rate either 23.98fps or 29.98fps This should eliminate your audio drifting.

    For the inspector preset issue you can use an adjustment clip (or layers sence you a an Adobe guy) and just slap that on top and then your can put that in your power bins Which you can access up top under view which will always be in every project and you only have to do this once and when you are done you just drag and drop

    Really happy you did this video. I love resolve, but I was a PP user for 8 years and I do miss a lot of things about it too. The only problem is Resolve seems to have a cult following, where I feel most comments on what premiere pro did right, aren't taken on board too much. Same with FCPX.

    Man I wish I had an audience of thousands I could bang a video like this out to on YT and get so many helpful responses! I may have to start a channel and work for a few years at that :) I think a follow-on to this video is in order though where you redress the issues you put out there and some of the great tips that viewers have posted in response. That would be very well received I have a feeling.
    Was going to suggest an extro as you requested but then saw your current one and thought; it’s great; why mess with it?

    I have used Davinci for 3 months now and still learning how it works. I never used Premiere so I can't relate to some of the issues, I came from Vegas Pro. This video somehow ended up as a turorial for me on where/how some things works and all the shortcuts I didn't knew about until this video haha.
