Joey Badass: Born In The Wrong Era

- These days, the line between comfort and conformity in hip-hop is indistinguishable. Whereas A Tribe Called Quest, DMX, Onyx and Wu Tang Clan were commended for reconfiguring the commercial landscape in their image, today is defined by a measured and cautious approach. As a result, we’ve reached a point where few hip-hop artists have been able to escape the diluting process that comes from success favoring more lightweight work. With substance reduced to the outskirts, many modern rappers aren’t concerned with the immortality, they’re simply stockpiling as much cash and clout as they can for however long their relevance holds up.
With the exception of maybe Kendrick and Cole, these radicals largely find themselves stranded on the cusp of wider fame by refusing to water down. From Denzel Curry to JPEGMafia, Injury Reserve, Clipping and the Beast Coast crew, they’re all afflicted with an informal ceiling on them where, in previous eras, their unique perspective and originality may have been a selling point.
When it comes to this scenario, no-one is more of a case study for this exasperating fate than Brooklyn’s own Joey Badass.

he listed cole and kendrick as the exceptions for lack of substance. who else would y’all put on that list? i need new artists to listen to
Nick Grant is on that list, check out his la leakers freestyle for a sample
Immortal technique, jadakiss, run the jewels, denzel curry.
YBN cordae is good imo
Big KRIT, probably the most underrated rapper that everyone has heard at least one song from him. You find his music in movie trailers, videogames and TV shows so you'd think dude would be much bigger then he is. Ashton Matthews, Danny Brown, Russ, Dee 1, Tobe Nwige and snow tha product are some other indie rappers that have very unique and distinct sounds
J.I.D
I disagree, he was born in the right era, as he can develop a niche audience. In a over competitive "Golden Era" he would have faded into obscurity as just another talented lyricist......he has the opportunity in this era to really define himself and stand alone as more than that.
now THIS is what's up
put it perfectly
And he has gained that with new era as well hell his last album was his most successful and his first album 1999 was really good to
Facts, we need him to put out another project already.
Well said
Nah, him being from this era shows how diverse hip-hop has become
"Diverse" 😂 😂 😂 😂 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️, you should say TRASH 🚮
@@bastianoyarce2984 nah, if you don't think it's diverse you don't look hard enough
@@bastianoyarce2984 u need to dig harder bruh
bastian oyarce what you grow up to ? we was listening to joey since high school
kids rap about Fortnite
one of the reasons why he’s so dope is cuz he’s done all he’s done in the “wrong” era . he’s a breath of fresh air
glad people are saying things like this in the comments, gives me hope for the revival
This the comment we needed
I honestly think Joey should be on a Kendrick level for the even younger generation
Idk bro, section 80 alone is arguably better than any joey project
IggyBang Official I don’t think he’s getting at the level of music. More the impact and the voice that Kendrick has. Joey could always grow though.
Bro I’ll put 1999 up there with section 80 cnt even lie
He could’ve but every project he started declining
An drake
I honestly believe he was born in the right era, he's not underrated at all in any way, we just take him for granted which makes it feel more like he's underappreciated
well said
yep
Yeahh you’re right... he wouldn’t be hot in the 90s
He in the same box as Big Sean, they just a tier lower than Cole Kendrick & Drake.
@@wesley939 he would be but he would def be more underground than per usual.
"God made 3 bigs, 2 pacs, but he only made one error. The Era" - Hard ass bar from joey in Suspect
Biggie smalls, Big L, and Big Pun?
4 bigs tho, he forgot about Kane
Only one pac bro the bar doesn't really make sense it's reaching.
FREIDA RHEALNESS but his name is 2Pac. It’s a play on words
Where’s the people that enjoyed Joey when 1999 came out? thumbs up!
This should have like a MILLION thumbs up cuz that was an AMAZING project 😂👌🏼🔥
Feels so long ago now
Definitely one of the best hip hop projects ever, but I was like 9 when it came out, so I didn’t Get to appreciate it until years later
🤣 I can tell you're mad young by that comment...dont get a hurt feeling yougin' k?
1999 is one of my favorite rap albums. Definitely my favorite Joey project
when joey dropped the 1999 mixtape, I was 14, living in the poor side of Brazil. Even with the differences between our culture, that shit hit me so hard bro, it seemed he was talking directly to me, saying get up nigga and go get it.
Joey's music means a lot for me, it's like a friend who grew up with me giving the advices that I needed.
People like Joey will be around a lot longer than most rappers as he has a dedicated fanbase which is the most important thing for a long term career
Joey was a breath of fresh air in the 2010s!!
He was born in 1995 and sounding like 1995....ayyyy.
Lmao imagine thinking all American badaas was made in the wrong era. Joey a real one
period
Facts that album is goated
came out years earlier even lol
@@devvv4616 true
Personally I like Joey more than Kendrick. Both legends though, I get more motivation and self-actualization from Joey
I love K dot. But Joey last album was very good. It was the best rap album that dropped that year. Damn dropped the same year
Yea Joey is better than Kendrick to me...just more relatable to me
RunningOnEmpty wtf...section 80 is mid 1999 is miles ahead of that
lmao section 80 is equal with summer knights. 1999, aab and b4 can destroy section 80 almost in every aspect just tpab is better than every joey's project
TPAB>1999>GKMC>B4.DA.$$>AAB>DAMN IDK HERE WHO PROJECT IS BETTER BUT PERSONALLY ENJOYMENT SK>S80
Joey the GOAT
The problem with conscious rappers is their beat selection. Deadass if they rapped over harder beats they'd be more popular
Fr tho
I think Denzel fits in with this era very well. Helped that his style was sort of abrasive so him dropping hard songs is always welcome.
I think the main reason on why Joey hasn't become as popular as for example Kendrick or Cole is simply because he hasn't figured out how to combine mainstream appeal with his solid lyricism. If you're looking at his contemporaries, they all had those certain tracks very early on in their carreers which allowed them to elevate to this so called untouchable status. Joey hasn't (yet). Devastated is what comes the closest, but in my opinion fails as it was just one out of many songs back when it was released.
Probably because joey is independent too, Cole got Jay cosign kendrick got dre
He did a good job of getting better with that with his latest album though
Robert Payne Cole sold his souls for clout stop defending that bullshit
Devastated was absolute garbage.. Joeys best stuff was 1999 and Summer Knights IMO.
I think he ran out of ideas when steez died keep it g
Been listening to joey, steez, pro era, Flatbush Zombies, and Underachievers since 2011-2012, love these guys, way fucking better than odd future lol
Only liked Odd Future for Earl and Tyler now both of them are doing great
Odd future ain't lighting a candle when compared to joey. Even earl and Tyler, talking down to joey is just plain disrespectful. One of the last true mc left
BEAST COAST!!!!
but tyler had the best verse on that song he did w joey and them
Dominic Jones he meant he likes pro era and Flatbush zombies much more than odd future smart guy
Because of his early work, he kind of suffers the same fate as what happened to Common or a Talib Kweli. They are basically put into a box and if they dare try to leave that box people don’t really fuck with it. Personally I think he came in the wrong era because he would have hugely benefited if he were to have a career during the late 90’s. Now he’s just a niche rapper for people want to reminisce on the 90’s or who just want a modern take of the 90’s. But I just think he should just be grateful of having a hardcore fan base and just continue to satisfy them with music.
Joey literally is a genius
THE THE GIRLS A MINOR🔥🔥🔥
Him being around proves that hip hop isn’t getting “worst” it’s just becoming a lot more wide in sound and now there’s something for everyone
I like that too but the problem is when Ye expanded the audience too much with his other albums and rappers like Em existed and Drake came it created too many untalented rappers so Joey couldn’t shine as much with his 90’s style.
@Jackson Gilmore
THAT'S WHAT I ALWAYS SAY!!!!
joey bada$$ will always be in my top 5
If you lost somebody dis year listen to Yung monzo numb
He's not born in the wrong era, he's ours and we need to treat him like it✊🏾🔥
Damn that's real 💯
Its true
See them while they here
Joey one of the goats, he manages to pay homage to old school rap but also implements new techniques and expands on the sound. Like Neo-Traditional Boom Bap, idk what else to call it. I'm happy I got to listen to his music when I did, it got me through so much.
he posted a pic to his IG story of a file with 9+ hours worth of unreleased music a few months back.
Only about 15% of that will realistically get released
@@ayinstrumentals7731 & even that's probably a higher end of an estimate
He stays playing with our emotions
Hopefully some more with X is included!
Someone should leak that lmao
Honestly Joey Badass fans have let him down. "Devastated" was supposed to be his mainstream hit to catapult him to new heights but his fans rejected the song calling him a sell out. The song was good but his fans didnt want to hear it which i think cost him greatly. He wasnt born in the wrong era he just has a hard fan base to satisfy imo
That's exactly what I keep saying tho. Exploring with a new sound just makes you more versatile, I don't understand why it was rejected honestly
That's a great point. Fans are so fickle. They want growth, but they want you to be the same person. That's just impossible.
Yeah it was bullshit when people started calling Joey a sellout. But you can’t be mad at the fans for disliking Devastated. He just made that song for mainstream appeal, it was obvious that his real fans would hate it.
That song was cringe
mehoo8 that’s the only song that went platinum in his whole career. A lot of hip hop heads want him to drop lyrical music but don’t support him when it comes time to buy albums. How the hell did All Amerikkkan Badass only sell 27k copies first week. Then you guys wanna get mad at him for dropping devastated but it’s obvious now he understands hip hop heads don’t put their money where there mouth is.
RIP Steez
47 likes fam that's crazy
Kinda want this channel to do a video about Steez and his mixtape.
Joey has album of the year coming y’all just need to listen
If you lost somebody dis year listen to Yung monzo numb
He’s definitely up there with Cole and Kdot. He just doesn’t get the attention he deserves
Yup, just like Freddie Gibbs. Another MC that is heavily slept on
He ain't on Kendrick's level, but there's like 2 or 3 people ever on that level so that's not a knock on him. I think he is much better than Cole though.
@@Rams1002KDKiller rapper? Sure. Music wise? No
He's definitely top five of his era. Gives homage and respect to his predecessors to do it before him!
He's in my top 10 for sure i like all his project's
Greats big up greats.
This era I put him top 3
He's top 15 imo.
Def top 10.
He is grossly underrated it’s not fair, and his music continues to improve its crazy
Joeys a perfectionist. Wish I could listen to all his unreleased shit. Rest in power STEELO
I feel Joey was born in the RIGHT era. The reason he’s such a breath of fresh air is because of the state of Hip Hop these days
Joey’s music ages well. People not with the woke shit though.
true
Joey badass is one of my favorite rappers of this generation. I hope he never gets discouraged. Such an inspiration
Thank you for shouting Injury reserve. Rest in power Groggs 💔
You really got your writing down man. Idk if you script your episodes but not a single word feels wasted. I'm hooked!
I'm going to check him out because of this video I didn't know he was on some hip hop shit and not booty and bag music
Booty and bag music?🤣
Lmao I've never heard of the phrase "boot and bag music" I'm gonna try to use that
Yh man you should check out , flatbush and underachievers too. Real music right there
1999 will change your life
Lub bers it certainly did change mine last year 😂😂
Thanks for making this, it really put into perspective what the guy's been facing. I've been following him for a long time but I had no clue about the significance with Tyler, the guys literally clowned him while he was in high school while on a TV Show but I get it they felt attacked by the whole industry at the time by people like him. But eventually the two came to terms when they grew up that's great to see.
That's not really as significant as this video makes it seem. When they recorded that video, all Joey had released up that point was 1999 and some singles. Of course they (unfairly) tried to clowned him because at the time Odd Future was at their peak. OF has always been trash and overhyped though, the only one that can hold a candle to Joey is Earl
Freddie Gibbs & Big KRIT are born in the wrong era but I’m glad Freddie starting to get his plaudits and he even got signed !
Freddie Gibss is like 40 😂
😂😂😂😂exactly
Nah, Joey was a 90's rapper, breathed 90's air, then got thrown into a time-travelling machine so that he can save hip-hop in our generation
Na, he's born in the right era, Joey is versatile af he's showing us that boom bap can also work in this era
He’s a prodigy of the art of being an MC, a master of ceremonies. Ceremonies in today’s world are few and far between which is why someone of his caliber is under appreciated by those born in a similar time. It’s not to say he was born in the wrong time because he would be just another great 90s MC but being born now, he’s one of the last true remaining ones which doubles if not triples his value to the hip hop enthusiast.
Lmao tyler that “Stay in school” hit too hard
I’ve been listening to Joey Badass lately ironically
Yeah 1999 is pretty good. Keep up the good work. :)
Who else been listening to Joey B since 1999 ?
crazy, i’ve never seen joey as a tribute act , just an old soul !
Same
I think him being in this era just shows how diverse hip-hop has became and how the multiple sub genres formed...it really helps me appreciate every vibe of music more
Much respect to Pro Era, TDE, Dreamville & other conscience MCs for holding down the essence of HipHop, which is Health, Love Awareness, Wealth.✌️
Joey, big krit, and rapsody are criminally underrated rappers
Wrong era but at the moment he’s in the right time frame with the worlds current situation
He's just one of the best MCs out there rn, 1999 is easily one of the best modern classics, he's got the words, the thought and drives the pen in a way not many can.
Love his music, he always makes me want to change every single shit and go on my own way to live a better life.
joey is born in the right era cause what he talks about should be spreaded out and he can rap over trap beats and make it sound good it's just that he can fit in the golden era and this new era of hip hop unlike j cole and denzel for example. Joey is the ONLY artist that sounds like a direct evolution of the 90's era and he could definitely be mainstream in the 90's as well. The problem isn't joey it's the fact that no one likes boom bat style beats or a track that has makes you go back and pay attention
Videos like this really highlight the gems in Hip-hop....you have to make one on Big Krit, being from Mississippi I feel he doesn't get any shine when he's able to hold his own with any artist
the crazy thing with joey is that it feels like he been around forever
Salute to Joey Bada$$, my dude was actually born in the right era, he is exactly what Hip-Hop needs right now.
1999 was probably one of the top 3 mixtapes of the 2010s
Yes. Also Kendrick's section 80.
Be healthy 🌿
One of the best of all time Mixtape
I heard him through the song” infinity” by XXXTENTACION
Such an amazing song
Then you should listen to his infinity, actually 95 til infinity
which Joey completely carried X on. sorry but its true

@@kris_dakid5757 that's your opinion and I respect it but I have mine.
Just realized he is 25! Tyler didn’t give us Igor until he was 28.
He has room for growth and I personally liked his new sound on AABA.
If you lost somebody dis year listen to Yung monzo numb
tyler has always had great albums wym
what’s your point? all of tylers albums reflect how talented he is at producing
4:59 Damn. OF did joey dirty 💀
I'm a fan of both sides and I never seen that video 😂
Joey's "Summer Knights" project is a CLASSIC!!
How you said “bad mon” has me dying 😂🤣🤣🤣
I think he should do more work with the Ragge artists like Chronixx. I would definitely listen to a Sizzla x Joey Badass tape
If you lost somebody dis year listen to Yung monzo numb
As long as Joey is content, it’s gonna be a smooth ride
Let's not forget that Joey's last project was in 2017
Many mainstream names in rap right now hadn't even made their first song at that point.
He might get as big as kdot or cole after his next album,
no way to really gauge his current success and popularity if his most recent work is 3 years old
Time will tell.
Joey Bada$$ is my favorite artist. He’s unique & so versatile. What he does for his community & his label are unmatched by anyone. His sound is not for everyone, but nobody can take a dig at him for doing anything wrong.
1:48 "Muhlyah" Obama 😂😂
he was referring to malia Obama, Obama’s daughter that wore pro era merch back in the day
New York hip hop has been LIT!!! Flatbush Zombies, Joey Badass, ASAP Ferg, and the list goes on and on and on.
Random but, Joey in the show Mr. Robot was fire. His acting skills is just as on point as him being a rapper!
That show is slept on just like Joey. F_Society.exe
His short film just won an Oscar if I’m not mistaken
I must say, he truly killed his role on MR ROBOT... it definitely deserved a mention.
I like how he wants it to be know that he wants to make a classic not just some music & that’s the type of music I want
He is the modern day Big L, if he was still with us I am damn sure he would have had made a joint project with Joey Badass . RIP Big L.
Sadly he will need to be patient be be fully appreciated. He is really skilled and has a lot to say. I am a huge fan and always introduce my friends and they are always blown away
Joey is a continuation of previous eras. He is the epitome of hip hop

joey badass the most under appreciated rapper. need his next album asap 🔥🥵
People mistake main stream success for artistic validation. Take a Lil uzi compared to a Joey badass for example.
sooo true, i mean look at his temptation record, it just got gold and it came out in 2017
True but u can't deny you can have both ie kendrick and j cole
But Lil Uzi Vert has more claim to being an icon than Joey Badass as far as 2010's hip hop goes.
Imma consider this as the rollout of Joey Bada$$ new album
Joey Bada$$ is dope we just need some music from him and he will be back in the limelight imo. Last solo album was 2017 which feels like an eternity ago.
Joey top 5 all time in my opinion one of my go to artist to listen to
Joey is the missing member of Wu-tang clan
Lol he played inspectah deck for a reason ig
Man, as someone who found out about Joey thru Mr. Robot I always thought the script writers gave him this super nuanced interesting character to play. Turns out dude really is just that interesting
Ngl earl and Tyler disrespect Joey made me big mad. Those guys are not even close to Joeys level
They made fun of him years back on mtv, funny how he flew over all of Oddfuture lmao they kept quiet
Stop it tyler the creator is a great ass artist and earl would give Joey comp bar for bar
Earl and Tyler can be lyrical if they wanted too especially Earl. They could definitely go at it bar for bar. Even Domo Genesis tbh
Boy what you smoking Tyler and earl was different
Joey is more of a flow and wordplay/metaphor rapper. Earl is more into rhyme schemes and overall vibe of a track.
Both phenomenal in their own ways, with the ability to crossover into their other territories.
Joey needs to come up more when it comes to the g.o.a.t.s. he was only 17 when writing Waves like bruh. CapitalSTEEZ FOREVER.
I could see Joey murdering some Alchemist or Madlib production
Trap Door was made by Alchemist and there are a bunch of songs where he was spitting over old madlib beats
Relentless Collective true...I meant whole album produced by one of them though
Like Gibbs’ ALFREDO or BANDANA
PowdaToastFace Killah eh bandana was good but i could for sure see joey on piñata instrumentals.
Man i been saying for ages i would love to see joey and a madlib album
the era of lyrics cant die
Boom bap is back y'all tripping Griselda Records Roc Marciano and Gibbs too
In this Era, Social Media gives him the ability to build a fanbase.
Sucks being a lyricist during these times. Since there’s no way in hell you’re going to get radio play since it’s not watered down like most mainstream music.
Roddy rich is a lyricist and he gets radio play
@@canoncalloway3705 no he not.

Wishful thinking, but I feel like it would hit.
He in the right era. I think he can be a game changer and he knows that.
Been a Joey Fan since 1999....dude is the truth
It’s as simple as this.
Rappers who have the ability to be a lyrical genius, don’t need big corporations to succeed.
So when these big record labels come to them with these bogus deals where they basically need to “sell their soul”, they can refuse.
However, by refusing these deals, they don’t get the same exposure and promotions that other rappers get.
Whereas rappers like Tekashi 69, who don’t have the same level of word play, will take those deals.
This is why we have so many Lil Pumps, Trippie Redd’s, etc.
It’s always been this way.
The Lox, Slaughterhouse, Papoose, Fabolous, etc.
So many “Hood rappers” get the “street cred” and respect by true hip hop heads.... but they never truly get that MASSIVE mainstream media push.
It’s all about the deals you choose to sign.
Lou York City it’s simply that those artist rap well but their music has no repeatability people need some they can hear and say back they are unable to find a blend of both that’s why his music is unpopular the sound is unappealing for repeated play
He was meant to be here for this era. He's the savior of hip hop. Too many people just sleep on him so focused on the wrong material. He's definitely not overrated. He's just not appreciated enough.
