That this song wasn't a bigger hit is a crime. Steve Lukather's vocals are stellar & the instrumentation is sublime. The song was written as a tribute to George Lucas's THX1138. It's probably my favorite Toto song.

Jeff Porcaro had a birthday April 1, he would have been 69, the groove master, double drumming with the late Jim Gordon somewhere. Jeff was my schoolmate in LA, along with his brothers, and their success was so much fun to watch!
Toto was essentially a HS band, Jeff, Steve, Mike Porcaro, Lukather and Paitch, our mate Dana even engineered their first 2 albums.
Huge in Europe and Japan. I've read that they have played on recordings, together or as musicians, that have sold over 750 million albums, now that's making a mark on the music industry, consummate professionals.
This song is awesome, when you lay down on the floor in the dark with your headphones on and your eyes shut. So good!

Paich wrote it as a tribute to George Lucas. Lucas's first movie was called THX-1138 and was set in the future. Every person was known by a number instead of a usual name. humans were roundd up and taken to be prisoners. Two of them risked their lives trying to get out.
I used to think the song was about the character 99 from the 60's TV show, Get Smart. But what a groove! This song, along with Georgy Porgy, are two of my favourite Toto songs!

'99' was predominantly a performance video, though the set design was rather conceptual. Following David Paich's intention regarding the lyrics, about a sterile society in which names are forgotten and love forbidden, the set was sterile white, with various sized sculptured 99's hanging and standing about, and the band was clad in futuristic white jumpsuits. I love Toto! I see them in concert every year I can. They have been busting out hits for over 40 years and still touring. Steve Lukather aka Luke, who plays bass guitar with Toto and on this song, tours every fall with Ringo Starr and his band. "99" was a female alien who they loved. This was my favorite song of TOTO, when I was you, not a big hit at all, but a great song, BTW my name on internet Clannad99 was made up by the Irish band Clannad and 99, you can imagine, this TOTO song "99" of course, lol. And here Steve Lukather is the singer. Saw this band TOTO live outdoors in summer 2006.

There was a very popular sitcom in the late 60's here in the States called "Get Smart". The female lead character was the sexy Agent 99, played by Barbara Feldon. When this came out in '79, I was a Junior in high school, and everyone I knew believed the rumor that this song is about her.
